The Book of the Little Pigs by Aquiles Nazoa

Hello everyone. Continuing with the books that are part of my childhood memories, today I’m sharing one that I know simply by heart—proof of just how much I loved it. I used to read it by reciting the words aloud, which helped me practice for the poetry recitations and plays I took part in at school; the book has a perfect rhythm for that. It’s one of those books with text that really sticks with you—where quoting just a single line triggers a whole flood of memories. So, since I recently came across it at home, today I’ll be sharing my thoughts on El libro de los cochinitos (The Book of the Little Pigs) by the great Aquiles Nazoa.

Illustrated by Rosana Farías and published by Playco Editores, this work has two editions—one from 1997 and a second from 2002. Spanning 40 pages and classified as children's poetry, it offers a contemplative, poetic perspective on the pig and the multitude of names it goes by; the narrative unfolds as a young person looks back on their childhood and recalls how this subject always fascinated them.

The way each section is structured is so effective that it simply stays with those of us who have read it; the visual art is also intriguing and fun, featuring images that bring a smile to one's face while clearly reflecting Nazoa’s own perspective. It goes beyond merely listing names; it is about how he shares his views on how something so simple can hold so many meanings, whereas things of great magnitude may hold only a few. It prompts us to reflect and apply these insights to real life—situations where we often invent a thousand excuses, no matter how trivial the matter might be. Or, at least, that is how I might view it if I were looking for a different, perhaps less charming meaning than the one this book presents.

Naturally, this work focuses on learning and on the inherent value of animals—regardless of their type, behavior, or any stigma attached to them. They are living beings deserving of our respect, making this a beautiful book with a powerful message that appeals to both children and adults. I fondly remember my mother reading it aloud with the dramatic flair of a poetry recitation; that style greatly influenced how I learned the piece myself. I believe it is an excellent choice for anyone wishing to practice recitation or poetry, as well as for reinforcing intonation and rhyme skills in early readers—not to mention that it represents a piece of culture well worth knowing. So, without further ado, and hoping you enjoy it, thank you for reading.
