Greetings, I am excited to write about cinema again as I did before, but this time without pressure, I prefer to make a spontaneous publication than to keep it as a weekly responsibility as in my beginnings on the platform, in this way the current experience becomes more pleasant and it makes me feel good, this time I want to tell you about a movie called the Piano, this had some reviews that it is a movie focused on women but when I saw it I realized that in reality without the male characters the protagonist would not have development, making me feel uncomfortable even in some scenes and essential parts of the story, the movie managed to keep me attentive until the plot took winds of resolution, I was surprised how it became a story worth seeing, plus the band sound is exquisite.
The film is from the year 1993, directed by Jane Campion and starring Holly Hunter, by Harvey Keitel and Sam Neill, these two great male actors who are completely identifiable by their most famous films, such great personalities could overshadow the leading role of but it is not the case because the actress won the Oscar and the Golden Globe with this film, even without having many dialogues, she is the character with the greatest development, who begins as a widow who accepts an arranged marriage and has to go to live in New Zealand where her husband whom she has never seen has land, he tries to expand his domains but has a very hard job having to live with Maoris without speaking their language and working on swampy lands that have never been used for planting or anything similar , in the middle of that place with such a hostile climate, the lady arrives with her daughter and her piano.

We are talking about a period film, from the 19th century in which there are still no great medical, technological advances, among others and even more so in recently colonized lands, but she comes from Europe specifically from Scotland as a woman tied to her customs, that is, playing the piano and wearing large dresses that are not appropriate for the muddy terrain, the piano is difficult to move to its new home, so it is abandoned along the way. But here comes the interesting part of the matter, the protagonist is mute, but not deaf, for which this piano has an important function in her life, despite the fact that she uses the language of with her daughter, the music that she obtains thanks to her fingers and the piano is the only means of expression of her emotions, being a woman besides mute little expressive at the gestural level.

A neighbor of the new husband gets hold of the abandoned piano in an exchange with the husband and asks in exchange for the lady to give him piano lessons, the neighbor intends little by little to give the lady possession of the piano in exchange for her lets touch her body, so far the story of the film only seems that a woman victim of the circumstances of the time has no other option than to accept a marriage of convenience and that now a strange man intends to take advantage of the situation obtaining favors of a sexual nature to instead of returning a piano that belonged to her all along, but the story takes a different turn.

Honestly, one believes that everything has been said, that the story will end in tragedy, that this is nothing more than two abusive men in their own way and a woman who seems innocent but who is not, but the psychology of the female character has its background, In a certain way, she herself has been trying to deal with her own emotions and her decisions all her life. Under her appearance as a weak bird, she is a woman who becomes brave, but also, like any human, it is difficult for her to understand her impulses, her passions and her feelings. at the same time she has great strength, it turns out that the most emotional in the film end up being the men who love her, for a moment the protagonist reminded me a little of the film the Hours of 2002 because of the way in which the life of Virginia Wolff, that is, she is always in her inner world, where her emotions find their only channel in music and in Virginia's case in poetry, I think it's not a movie for everyone, just for lovers of slow plots, it has the tragedy of it, it has the passion of it and it has the joy of it, but none of these will ever shine over the other until the end which is actually hopeful. I hope you take the time to enjoy it.
