Greetings movie lovers, today I want to share with you one of my favorite animated films, it is Mary and Max, an Australian film that was made with the stop motion technique, which was considered one of the most artistic techniques of cinema , because both the elaboration of the characters and the scenarios, in addition to the large number of frames that are used, means that too many hours of elaboration are spent, so that the result is the result of the artistic effort of the entire team, this film was Directed by Adam Elliot at 2009, who was inspired by a friendship he had by correspondence for 20 years, the film shows a friendship also by letters, but between an 8-year-old girl from Australia and a 44-year-old Jewish man from New York.
Mary, despite living with her father and mother, has a very dysfunctional family, her father has a routine job in a factory and in his free time he practices taxidermy with birds that he finds dead, her mother, in addition to being a kleptomaniac, is alcoholic and depressed, for what Mary does not have any kind of parental control, she suffers from bullying and has no friends, she has low self-esteem and feels ugly and lonely, however she has a good imagination and enjoys some girlish pleasures such as having a pet rooster, but her childhood curiosity leads her to wonder things and not having anyone around her to turn to, which is why when she finds a telephone book in the United States, she decides to randomly write to a person from there, that is how she meets Max.

Max is a man who has many social difficulties, he is overweight, in addition to having great problems maintaining a stable life on an emotional level, he is later diagnosed with Asperger's, he does not understand why the world is different from him when everyone else acts the same illogical, he is very literal and honest, that brings him many consequences, he can't stand physical contact and doesn't express emotions, Mary's letters make him anxious but they also make him happy because for the first time he finds a friend.
This is a film that, being animated by stop motion, also uses other resources such as the scenes being colorless, except for certain objects that are an important part of the plot, for example in the images of Max's life. , only those objects that Mary sends him by mail will have color, this was something that immediately caught my attention, I immediately had a small semiotic analysis, because in my opinion Mary was what gave color to Max's life, this is subtly seen in those details.

This is a film that deals with issues that are difficult to digest, all the ailments of both personalities are hard to see, but the emotions are treated in a subtle way, in some cases humor is used in a very respectful way without mocking. Another resource that I consider important and that gives great quality to the film is the use of a narrator, this drastically reduces the number of dialogues, in fact there are almost no direct dialogues in the film, everything is an epistolary relationship, where the letters are responsible for the dialogue in the first place.
Communication has a lot of weight for both characters, when communication was effective between them, they were able to achieve great things on a personal level, for Max to have a routine that would allow him not to have so many shocks and to overcome some social obstacles, while for Mary to count With her friend, she was motivated to have goals. These goals varied over time, but the fact that she had a goal at that time allowed her to move forward. The first goal was to raise money to see Max, but over time these changing goals made her They allowed them to have a life, get married, go to university and study. On the other hand, the negative side is that there was also a codependent relationship where neither Max nor Mary could be well alone, so when communication was cut off, both suffered.

Depression, family history and loneliness created a big problem for Mary, while Max tried to lead a life where anxiety did not consume him, in addition to dependence on food and exposure to the hectic life of the city, the The reasons why this film moves me is because not all directors are willing to make such a risky bet, where animation is combined with a mental health issue.
