Hello Scrobble Life community and welcome back to my blog! Today I decided to share with you a review of an episode that, for me, marked a before and after in Stranger Things and is one of the best. To be honest, I've become totally addicted to this series—I think I've watched it about three times already—and yes, I ended up forcing my whole group of friends to watch it too! But this specific chapter... uff, it holds a very special place in my heart.

For those who might need a little context, Stranger Things plunged us right into Hawkins, Indiana, from the start, blending 80s nostalgia with dark supernatural mysteries, a group of kids facing impossible odds, and government conspiracies (with my absolute favorite duo, Dustin and Steve, carrying half the show!). However, by its fourth season, the series takes a masterclass turn, and "Dear Billy" becomes the absolute turning point—the pinnacle episode where everything explodes on both an emotional and narrative level. Hoy me decidí a compartir con ustedes la reseña de un capítulo que para mí marcó un antes y un después en Stranger Things y es uno de los mejores. Si te soy sincera, me he vuelto totalmente adicta a esta serie; creo que ya la he visto unas tres veces, ¡y hasta obligué a mi grupo de amigos a verla conmigo! Pero este capítulo en específico... uff, ocupa un lugar muy especial en mi corazón.

Para quienes necesiten un pequeño contexto, Stranger Things nos sumergió desde el principio en Hawkins, Indiana, combinando la nostalgia ochentera con misterios sobrenaturales oscuros y un grupo de amigos enfrentándose a lo imposible (¡con mi dúo favorito de todos, Dustin y Steve, que son geniales!). Sin embargo, en su cuarta temporada, la serie da un giro maestro y "Dear Billy" se convierte en el punto de inflexión absoluto, el episodio cumbre donde todo explota a nivel emocional y narrativo. ¡Espero que lo disfruten!

Atmosphere and Homages / Atmósfera y Homenajes

What hooks me the most is how they recreate that eighties atmosphere without falling into cheap nostalgia or a pretty postcard vibe; here the period feels alive, claustrophobic, and tactile. On one hand, they throw a brutal homage to classic slasher films by bringing in none other than Robert Englund as Victor Creel, and on the other, they pull off a film buff detail that blew my mind: that dark hallway in Pennhurst Asylum, with patients screaming on either side as Nancy and Robin walk through, is an exact carbon copy of when Clarice Starling goes to see Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. Those little nods are what totally win you over!

Lo que más me engancha es cómo recrean esa atmósfera de los ochenta sin caer en el simple afán nostálgico o de postal bonita; aquí la época se siente viva, claustrofóbica y táctil. Por un lado te tiran ese homenaje brutal al slasher clásico trayendo al mismísimo Robert Englund como Victor Creel, y por el otro se marcan un detalle de cinéfilos que me flipó: ese pasillo oscuro en el psiquiátrico de Pennhurst, con los pacientes gritando a los lados mientras Nancy y Robin avanzan, es un calco exacto de cuando Clarice Starling va a ver a Hannibal Lecter en The Silence of the Lambs. ¡Son esos guiños los que te ganan por completo!

The Emotional Weight / El Peso Emocional

Vecna stops being your typical video game monster and becomes the perfect X-ray of what depression, isolation, and that gnarly guilt of surviving when others couldn't really weigh.

Vecna deja de ser el típico monstruo de videojuego para convertirse en la radiografía perfecta de lo que pesa la depresión, el aislamiento y esa culpa mala de haber sobrevivido cuando los demás no pudieron.

Being set in the eighties, without smartphones or digital immediacy, makes everything more visceral: that relentless tick-tock of the 24-hour rule and depending literally on a Walkman and a cassette tape with handwritten titles to save her life... I swear the tension doesn't let you breathe for a single second.

Al estar ambientado en los ochenta, donde no había teléfonos inteligentes ni inmediatez digital, todo se vuelve más visceral: ese tic-tac implacable de la regla de las 24 horas y depender literalmente de un Walkman y una cinta de casete con los títulos escritos a mano para salvarle la vida... te juro que la tensión no te deja respirar ni un segundo.

Good thing the writers knew we were heading straight for a heart attack, because the comic relief they drop in Pennhurst is pure gold. Watching Robin rattle off a monologue a mile a minute to secure the visit, while trying not to collapse from pure nervousness, killed me with laughter! We desperately needed that breather before crashing headfirst into the abyss.

Menos mal que los guionistas sabían que íbamos directas al infarto, porque el alivio cómico que meten en Pennhurst es oro puro. ¡Ver a Robin soltando un monólogo a mil por hora para conseguir la visita mientras intenta no colapsar de los nervios me mató de la risa! Necesitábamos ese respiro con urgencia antes de caer de cabeza en el abismo.

The Ultimate Climax / El Clímax Absoluto

And then... well, then comes the crowning moment. Talking about Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill is already intense, but experiencing it here was so powerful that I ended up adding it straight to my personal playlist. Seeing how they use it as a literal bridge to pull her out of the darkness is a massive punch to the gut. Verses like "If I only could, I'd make a deal with God..." break your soul while you watch Lucas, Dustin, and Steve desperately trying to hit play on the boombox.

Y entonces... bueno, entonces llega el momento cumbre. Hablar de Running Up That Hill de Kate Bush ya es fuerte, la sentí tan intensa al punto de que tuve que ponerla en mi lista de reproducción. Ver cómo la usan como un puente literal para sacarla de la oscuridad es un tremendo palo. Versos como "If I only could, I'd make a deal with God..." te parten el alma mientras ves a Lucas, Dustin y Steve desesperados intentando atinar con el radiocasete.

All of this holds together thanks to Sadie Sink's titanic performance. She doesn't need long speeches; with just her looks, her body language, and that palpable panic, she leaves you frozen in your tracks. And as a fun fact that blew my mind: Dacre Montgomery filmed all of his parts via Zoom from Australia due to pandemic restrictions! Pulling off that brutal chemistry and tension with a green screen and pure editing magic is worthy of a standing ovation.

Todo esto se sostiene gracias al trabajo titánico de Sadie Sink. No necesita grandes discursos; con las puras miradas, su lenguaje corporal y ese pánico palpable, te deja helada en el sitio. Y como dato curioso que me voló la cabeza: ¡Dacre Montgomery grabó todo lo suyo por Zoom desde Australia por las restricciones de la pandemia! Que lograran esa química brutal y esa tensión con un croma y pura magia de edición es digno de aplauso de pie.

Anyway, "Dear Billy" is a masterpiece from start to finish—a work of art about mental health and friendship that leaves your heart in your mouth.

En fin, "Dear Billy" es una joya de principio a fin, una obra de arte sobre la salud mental y la amistad que te deja con el corazón en un puño.

From Screen to Living Room / De la Pantalla al Salón

This episode left me so shaken and with my head spinning so much that I needed to channel all that energy somehow. At that moment, two of my greatest passions collided: my absolute love for this series and my passion for crochet. Honestly, making the amigurumi wasn't an easy project, but it wasn't super hard either—maybe it was just fueled by the sheer excitement of having my very own mini Demogorgon! Stitch by stitch, giving shape to that open mouth with its teeth, look what I put together.

Este episodio me dejó tan marcada y con la cabeza dándole vueltas que necesitaba canalizar toda esa energía de alguna forma. En ese punto exacto chocaron dos de mis más grandes pasiones: mi devoción por esta serie y el crochet. Honestamente, lo del amigurumi no fue un proyecto fácil pero tampoco tan difícil, ¡quizás era por la emoción que sentía de tener mi propio mini Demogorgon! Entre puntada y puntada, dándole forma a esa boca abierta con sus dientes, ¡miren lo que me armé tejiendo!

It was my way of bringing a little piece of that world home—doesn't it look awesome? Every time I see it on the shelf, I instantly remember Max's run. It's proof of how powerful a good story can be and how art inspires more art.

Fue mi manera de traerme un pedacito de ese mundo a casa, ¡a que quedó chulísimo? Cada vez que veo la figura en la estantería, me acuerdo al instante de la carrera de Max. Es la prueba de lo poderosa que puede ser una buena historia y de cómo el arte inspira más arte.
