For a while I had been wanting to watch something “old school” again, one of those anime that are becoming more and more difficult to find nowadays. Reading @promete0sz a few days ago I saw that he reviewed this incredible gem from the early 2000's that caught my attention for a couple of reasons; the first is because of the crime and mafia plot that never disappoints and the second is because its protagonists are women, women who have zero complexes of falling to blows, unloading guns and all kinds of weapons against others, cursing to the four winds, being humiliating and tough, very tough. I knew what I was going to see and in the end I was very surprised and satisfied.

Desde un tiempo había querido volver a ver algo "vieja escuela", de esos anime que cada vez son más complicados encontrar hoy en día. Leyendo a @promete0sz hace unos días vi que hizo la reseña de esta increíble joya de principios de los 2000 que me llamó mucho la atención por par de razones; la primera es por la trama de crímenes y mafia que nunca defrauda y la segunda es porque sus protagonistas son mujeres, mujeres que tienen cero complejos de caerse a golpes, descargar pistolas y todo tipo de armas contra otros, maldecir a los cuatro vientos, ser humillantes y duras, muy duras. Sabía lo que iba a ver y al final me quedé muy sorprendido y satisfecho.

This story focuses on the Lagoon Company, mercenary pirates who make a living doing all kinds of jobs for powerful people of dubious legality. One day in one of these jobs they meet Rockuro Okajima, a businessman carrying a disk with important and classified information who is kidnapped by these people and abandoned by the company he worked for. With nowhere to go and nothing to do, he decides to make his way and join these people in a sort of Stockholm syndrome or simply fell in love at first sight with Revy, one of the members of the group.

Esta historia se centra en la Compañía Lagoon, unos piratas mercenarios que se ganan la vida haciendo trabajos de todo tipo para gente poderosa y de dudosa legalidad. Un día en uno de esos encargos conocen a Rockuro Okajima, un empresario que portaba un disco con información importante y clasificada quien es secuestrado por esta gente y abandonado por la empresa para la que trabajaba. Sin tener que hacer ni a donde ir decide hacerse paso y unirse a estas personas en una especie de síndrome de Estocolmo o que simplemente se enamoró a primera vista de Revy, una de las miembro de dicho grupo.

The anime is based solely on the premise that I mentioned, being in Southeast Asia doing errands generally for the mafias or any other type of criminal organization. Personally, it is a story that I enjoyed a lot because of the absurd amount of action, in each chapter of the 12 there is a shootout, a fight, missile launches, clashes between ships and helicopters, chases; everything you can imagine of a movie in action. It is very complete in that aspect, it is impossible to get bored. Besides, there are all kinds of conflicts and they have to deal with Nazis, Chinese triads, Russian mafias, even the Colombian guerrilla (FARC) is mentioned. And yes, Venezuela is also mentioned but not exactly for its beaches.

El anime se basa únicamente en la premisa que les mencioné, estar por el sudeste asiático haciendo encargos generalmente para las mafias o cualquier otro tipo de organización criminal. En lo personal es una historia que disfruté mucho por la cantidad absurda de acción que hay, en cada capítulo de los 12 que son hay un tiroteo, alguna pelea, lanzamientos de misiles, enfrentamientos entre barcos y helicópteros, persecuciones; todo lo que se puedan imaginar de una película en acción. Es muy completa en ese aspecto, es imposible que te aburras. Además de que hay toda clase de conflictos y es que les toca tratar con nazis, con triadas chinas, mafias rusa, hasta la guerrilla colombiana (FARC) la nombran. Y si, Venezuela es mencionada también pero no precisamente por sus playas.

This was made by the people at Madhouse, I think it goes without saying the amount of things they have done. The animation is very good, at times it takes us back to the things we saw in the 90's but it has details a little more current to that era that makes it not 100% vintage. Everything, the fluidity of the scenes, the design of the characters, how raw and graphic it is because yes, the flag of this anime is violence, everything is in its right measure. It is impressive the differences that we can see with just a few years of distance between this and what is made today, it will be because I am very nostalgic but sometimes I prefer to see these things.

Esto fue hecho por la gente de Madhouse, creo que no hace falta decir la cantidad de cosas que han hecho. La animación es muy buena, por momentos nos traslada a las cosas que veíamos en los 90 pero tiene detalles un poco más actuales a esa época que hace que no sea 100% vintage. Todo, la fluidez de las escenas, el diseño de los personajes, lo cruda y gráfica que es porque si, la bandera de este anime es la violencia, está todo en su justa medida. Es impresionante las diferencias que podemos ver con tan solo unos años de distancia entre esto y lo hecho hoy en día, será porque soy muy nostálgico pero a veces prefiero ver estas cosas.

The characters and interactions are the real treasure. Revy is the tough and dry type with everyone, she doesn't get sentimental because the only thing she cares about is getting the jobs done. That changes when Rock arrives, he is not made for that world, he is too good a person and that shocks Revy. Since they are so different there are always arguments, but you know they are more superficial than anything else; deep down she is a good person, it's just that it's hard for her to show it because she has an image to protect. Rock may have softened her up a bit without her realizing it. You have to keep in mind that everyone's past, in different contexts, was not the best for them, hence why they act the way they do.

Los personajes y las interacciones son el verdadero tesoro. Revy es la tipa dura y seca con todos, no se anda con sentimentalismos ya que lo único que le importa es hacer los trabajos. Eso cambia cuando llega Rock, él no está hecho para ese mundo, es demasiado buena persona y eso a Revy le choca. Al ser tan diferentes siempre hay discusiones pero de esas que sabes que son más superficiales que otra cosa; en el fondo ella es buena gente solo que le cuesta exteriorizarlo porque tiene una imagen que proteger. Rock puede que la haya ablandado un poco sin ella haberse dado cuenta. Hay que tener en cuenta que el pasado de todos, en diferentes contextos, no fue el mejor para ellos, de ahí a que actúen como lo hacen.

And the other wild character is Roberta, the housekeeper. A real killing machine. That story is very cool because it involves a child, her master and who she has to protect. She is the way she is because of her revolutionary past in the guerrillas but once she comes into the family she has to keep up appearances. When this child is in danger, she has to give everything to save him. It is interesting to see that duality, that underneath that lethality made person there is a heart and a loyalty, a matter of principle. In short, women are everything in this anime and even the boss of it all is a powerful Russian. Highly recommended, it has 12 episodes of pure action. There is a second season that I have already started and it looks amazing.

Y el otro personaje salvaje es Roberta, la ama de llaves. Una auténtica máquina de matar. Esa historia es muy cool porque involucra a un niño, su amo y a quien tiene que proteger. Ella es como es por su pasado revolucionario en las guerrillas pero una vez llega a la familia tiene que guardar apariencias. Cuando este niño está en peligro, ella tiene que darlo todo para salvarlo. Es interesante ver esa dualidad, que debajo de esa letalidad hecha persona hay un corazón y una lealtad, un tema de principios. En fin, las mujeres lo son todo en este anime y es que hasta le jefa de todo es una rusa poderosa. Muy recomendado, tiene 12 episodios de pura acción. Hay una segunda temporada que ya le comencé y que pinta increíble.
