Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
**Hello friends, good vibes to all.
I had always been recommended to watch the "chainsaw guy" anime but for some strange reason I always put it off, either because of time constraints or because I just forgot about it and that was it. That changed this week when I decided to catch up on this story that is a little over a year old now. When I read a little bit of what it was about I realized that we see again elements with which I'm a little familiar such as demons, those entities that can be the most degradable thing there is or the most useful things, as it happens in this case. Kimetsu, Jujutsu Kaisen and now this one and surely many more involve us with stories of demons that never cease to amaze us and that in the end end up getting to us fans.
Chainsaw Man is a strange anime because it mixes savagery and very typical violence when facing a threat with a rather mundane and basic lore. This is not to say that it is a bad thing, on the contrary, I found it amazing how characters with such basic desires can do such extraordinary things. As I said there is a lot of action but also lust, hence the desires I'm talking about; a very interesting mix indeed. Having finished watching it and waiting for the second season I can say that it is one of the best I've seen, keeping the distance with the big titles. So without further ado, let's talk a little about what this story of killing and desires is about.
The story begins with Denji, an orphan who is immersed in abject poverty. When his father died, what he left him were debts and now he must pay them off by working for the Yakuza. One day Denji meets Pochita, a demon who ends up being his pet and faithful companion and at the same time helps him hunt demons to pay off the debt. But as in this mafia can not be trusted our protagonist is betrayed and killed. The thing is that because of the contract he had with Pochita, he sacrifices himself by giving his heart to Denji so that in this way Chainsaw Man is born, a kind of fusion or hybrid between demon and human. In the end, Pochita's feelings were or are pure, there really was a beautiful relationship between a person and his pet.
The point here is that since Denji never had anything in his life and lived eating garbage, anything that is offered to him is the best thing in the world, hence his desires and way of seeing life is so basic and simple. I say this because he is quickly recruited by the Public Security, an entity that is responsible for hunting demons and for this they offered him the only thing he craved, food. From here begins a story which will bring us relationships based on the most superficial desires that can exist at the same time that some pitched battles full of all the violence you can imagine.
With this anime something happens and it is that it goes from less to more. When you start watching it you realize that it starts a little weak, it's hard to start so in the first chapters you have to have a little patience. I'm not saying they are bad but if we compare them with the second half of the anime the difference is abysmal as far as intensity is concerned. The first 5-6 chapters are to show us the context of everything, the characters, their relationships; it is here where we learn a little of everyone because yes, they are all protagonists and are important. On several occasions these interactions between the characters become silly and childish, especially between Denji and Power (a young girl possessed by a demon), it's as if they were brothers fighting over everything.
The second part is when it gets down to the nitty-gritty. This is when the plot reaches its climax, you finally find out what is going on and all the final madness is unleashed. As I said there is a lot of blood, violence and it is very explicit, it leaves nothing to the imagination. But it's also explicit for other things, Denji's strongest desire is a purely carnal one and everything he does, all his sacrifices are entirely to fulfill that desire, there is nothing else. There's nothing over the top but there are a few scenes that are a bit suggestive, I thought it was cool because I don't usually associate this kind of thing with seas of blood and dismembered bodies so that combination is interesting.
The animation is incredible, worthy of MAPPA. The fights are extremely fast paced and extremely fast and yet the details of the fights are never lost. Everything is perfectly appreciated and understood. The movements are fluid, the animations at the level of gestures are well achieved, the truth is that everything becomes a little hypnotic. Another point are the characters, for me the key pieces of this anime. Denji, is a guy who despite how superficial he is, has a very strong conviction, he has some very accurate points of view sometimes. Aki and Himeno, the two you see above, are also very top characters. What's relevant about them is the relationship they have, one of respect and love that I would say transcends a lot. It's really an anime that has a plot and a reason to be, everything happens for a specific reason, but the way the characters act is what I liked the most.
And that's not even talking about Makima, everyone's boss, even at the end of the season the most enigmatic character for me. I think she can be the revelation in the second season if she is not already. Anyway, a very good anime that ends in a way that leaves you wanting to keep watching, epic animations, good character development, an interesting story. I give it an 8.5/10, I was quite surprised, it has very shocking moments. The second season is expected to arrive by 2024 so we would have little left, in theory. Highly recommended to everyone, if you haven't seen it, don't wait any longer, here are only 12 chapters. I leave you the trailer below.
