I've lost count of how many Studio Ghibli films I've seen over the years. Even when you think you've seen them all, there's always one that's missing. Based on that, I'd have to say I'm missing a couple after watching Arrietty this weekend, or as it's known in the English translation: "The Secret World of Arrietty." One of the first things to say is that this film is one of Ghibli's more "normal" ones, not because it's bad or anything like that, but because in terms of fantasy, it's perhaps not as spectacular. It's interesting that I say this considering the characters in the story, but oh well.

Perdí la cuenta de cuantas películas del Studio Ghibli me he visto a lo largo de los años y es que por más que se crea que se han visto todas siempre sale alguna por ahí que falta. Partiendo de eso habría que decir que me deben de faltar un par después de haber visto este fin de semana, Arrietty o como le conoce con la traducción: "el mundo secreto de Arrietty". De las primeras cosas ha decir es que este film es de los más "normales" que tiene Ghibli, no porque sea mala ni nada por el estilo sino porque en lo que a fantasía se refiere quizás no sea tan espectacular. Interesante que diga esto teniendo a los personajes que hay en la historia, pero bueno.

This film introduces us to Arrietty and her family, tiny beings who live in the human world. How do they do it? Well, hidden beneath a large house where they managed to build their own tiny home. There they live peacefully, undisturbed, but with several conditions. The first is that they cannot be seen by humans, as that would mean the end of them. The second is that they occasionally go up to the house to "borrow" some things they need to survive, mostly food. The dynamics of their lives change when Arrietty and her father are spotted on an expedition, specifically searching for supplies, by Sho, a sick young man who has come to live in the house.

Esta película nos presenta a Arrietty y su familia, unos seres muy pequeños que viven en el mundo de los humanos. Como lo hacen? - pues escondidos debajo de una gran casa en donde fueron capaces de construir su diminuta casa. Allí viven tranquilos sin que nadie los moleste pero con varias condiciones. La primera es que no se pueden dejar ver por los humanos ya que eso supondría el fin de ellos y lo segundo es que de vez en cuando ellos suben a la casa a tomar "prestado" algunas cosas que necesitan para subsistir, comida más que todo. La cosa es que la dinámica de sus vidas cambia cuando Arrietty junto a su padre fueron vistos en una expedición, precisamente buscando provisiones, por Sho, un joven enfermo que comenzó a vivir en dicha casa.

What is the crux or cause of the conflict? - Arrietty and young Sho manage to form a friendship despite his father's warnings against it, due to his distrust of humans. Several of their kind have disappeared in the past, so beyond distrust, it's fear they may feel. Now, with their sense of security somewhat shaken, they will have to be extra careful and, if necessary, find another home. One of the things that makes Ghibli great is its ability to create endearing characters, no matter how "simple" their story may be. And I say simple even though we're talking about tiny beings who have their own world built right under humans' noses. But yes, they are very affectionate, kind characters, with whom it's very easy to empathize.

Cual es el detalle o la causa del conflicto? - que Arrietty y el joven Sho logran entablar una amistad a pesar de las recomendaciones de su padre que no lo hiciera por su desconfianza hacia los humanos y es que en el pasado han desaparecido varios de ellos, de su especie, de ahí a que más allá de desconfianza es miedo lo que pueden sentir. Ahora con su seguridad un poco alterada ellos tendrán que tener un extra de cuidado y en caso de ser necesario pues buscar otra casa para vivir. Una de las cosas que tiene cool Ghibli es la capacidad de hacer personajes entrañables por más "simple" que sea su historia. Y digo simple a pesar de que estamos hablando de unos seres ultra pequeños que tienen su propio mundo construido debajo de las narices de los humanos. Pero si, son personajes muy cariñosos, amables, con los que empatizar es muy fácil.

The plot is basically about how they live their lives. Things so basic to humans are extraordinary to them; a jar of sugar can last them for years, as can a bay leaf; cookies can also sustain them for a long time. The film's coolness lies in how the viewer is immersed in this reality—all the feats they have to perform simply to cross the house, climb onto a table, and get down. As always, Ghibli introduces a character who poses a threat, and in this case, it's the housekeeper who suspects these beings and sets out to capture them. This urgency makes the film interesting towards the end. Honestly, I wasn't bored for a single moment. I also think it's one of the Studio's shorter films, as it only lasts an hour and a half.

La trama es básicamente ver como ellos viven su vida. Como las cosas tan básicas para los humanos para ellos son extraordinarias, un tarro de azúcar les puede durar años, lo mismo que una hoja de laurel; las galletas también son cosas que les pueden dar sustento por mucho tiempo. Como el espectador logra sumergirse en esa realidad es lo cool del film, todas las hazañas que tienen que hacer para simplemente cruzar la casa, montarse en una mesa y bajarse de ella. Como siempre Ghibli introduce a un personaje que supone peligro y en este caso es la ama de llaves de la casa que sospecha de estos seres y se propone atraparlos, esa urgencia hace que la película hacia el final se ponga interesante. La verdad es que no me aburrió en ningún momento, creo también que es de los films más cortos de este Studio ya que dura hora y media.

The animation is typical of Studio Ghibli; the character designs are exactly the same even though this film was released in 2010. This doesn't mean it's low quality; on the contrary, the level of detail is incredible, especially in the natural elements. It's impressive how they capture nature and its simplicity. Without a doubt, it's one of the studio's best films by far. It's a very fresh and friendly movie; it doesn't have the sadness or drama of some of their other titles, but it's still very enjoyable. A must-see if you like Studio Ghibli; I highly recommend it. I've included the trailer below.

La animación es la propia de Ghibli, todo el diseño de los personajes es exactamente el mismo a pesar de que este film fue sacado en el 2010. Esto no quiere decir que sea de baja calidad, al contrario, la capacidad de detalle que tienen es increíble, sobretodo los elementos naturales, es impresionante como logran captar a la naturaleza y su simpleza, sin dudas es de los mejor de este estudio por lejos. Es una película muy fresca y amigable, no tiene esa tristeza ni el drama de otros títulos pero de igual forma se disfruta mucho. Obligada de ver si les gusta el Studio Ghibli, muy recomendada la verdad. Les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
