Today I'm here to talk to you about a movie that I loved. Sometimes I check out what Netflix has to offer, and if something catches my attention, I don't think twice. That's how I found this beautiful animated movie. Although at first I thought it was a version of Thumbelina, I later realized it wasn't. It was a different story, even one with a lot of depth.

Arriety is a very tiny young girl, about the size of a human finger, she and her family live between the floorboards of an ordinary house, but they live hidden because they do not want big people (who are giants to her and her parents) to detect their presence, so when they need supplies Arriety goes to look for them at night with her father, overcoming obstacles. However, Shō, a very lonely boy who deals with a heart disease, arrives at that house and suddenly, by chance, he discovered Arriety, but despite his attempts to gain her trust, she is elusive and reluctant to trust him, she does not really trust any human due to her mother's constant warnings.

After finishing watching the movie I was left with a reflection in my head, prejudices can be fostered by people who have had bad experiences in life (like Arriety's mother) and sometimes these prejudices can be reinforced by bad behavior (like the woman who locked Arriety's mother in a jar), but that doesn't mean we should live in fear of the world, because it is full of bad things and dangers but also good and enriching things, like the friendship that later arose between Shō and Arriety, he only wanted her friendship, not to feel alone, and his friendship with Arriety gave him the strength he needed to face his illness, and it is proven that when someone is determined to live they have a greater chance of coming out on top of any vicissitude.

Maybe all the difficulties the tiny characters have in acquiring what they need represent the difficulties we have in real life in achieving what we want, but at the same time I think it could refer to the human capacity to adapt to different and even dangerous environments. In a way, this film also reminded me of the story of Anne Frank and her family, when they all had to live secluded in an annex and be as quiet as possible during the day so that no one would notice them. But in the end, just like in this film, they are all discovered, and to top it all off, they are denounced to the Nazis. So, although I regret that Anne Frank and her family had to go somewhere else, I am glad that they had a more encouraging ending than the Frank family.

Greetings to everyone in The Anime Realm community! Today I'm joining today to share with you a new Japanese animated movie review. This time we will be talking about a Studio Ghibli production, following the line of reviews I've been leaving around here of this animation studio that is one of my favorites, it's "Arriety and the World of Diminutives". From 2010, "Arriety" was directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi and based on Mary Norton's novel, The Raiders. The film is especially attractive for its approach to nature, its curiosities and the human connection with the unknown. I would quote here a line from J.R. Tolkien in the Lord of the Rings; "Even the smallest person can change the course of the future". So with that said let's begin.

In a rural area of Japan called Koganei, there is a beautiful house that holds a great secret: the existence of small beings (similar to humans) that inhabit the corners of the house and the surrounding forests. The tiny ones have an unbreakable rule: never show themselves to humans in order to keep their identity safe and their life in harmony. There we find Arriety, a tiny girl who lives with her parents in that house and who is in charge of helping them at home through different tasks. Soon things will change when one day Shō arrives, a 12 year old boy who due to his delicate health condition must stay in a quiet home and who coincidentally meets Arriety. From that moment on, the vulnerable existence of the tiny ones will be revealed to Shō. Giving birth to a beautiful friendship.

Arriety is a film that is measured more by descriptive than narrative aspects as the language here moves through images. It is a deep exploration into the diminutive Arriety's perspective of her entire world: the human utensils, the sugar cubes, the plant leaves, the furniture and so on. Which makes every shot we are shown seem even grander. In addition, the relationship between Shō and Arriety is as delicate as it is strong. Shō has a sensitivity that makes him be moved by things and with Arriety, it is even more intense. Both seem to perceive the fragility of the other (Shō because of his heart and Arriety because of his size). On the other hand it's nice to be able to watch an animation where the simplicity of the script doesn't weigh it down because the images, the music and the synchronicity of all those elements makes it fitting. It transmits a lot of peace. Today Sunday is a great option, so I recommend it. Without further ado, thank you very much for stopping by.

  3. Arrietty (2010)@deraaa533d

I was on Threads (IG) last night and I saw a clip of an Anime that intrigued me. I took a quick screenshot and went on to use Google Image to find it. Arrietty is the name.

    The Secret World of Arrietty

    IMG_4717.jpeg

    Screenshot

Arrietty is a bittersweet fantasy anime based on the 1952 novel The Borrowers by Mary Norton, an English author of children books. It centres on the relationship of one human boy, a Borrower (tiny person), and every other thing in between. Arrietty is purely fictional with imaginative characters and details that just makes you want to stay.

In only one hour and thirty-four minutes, Arrietty manages to steal my heart with its vibrant perspective on relationships and fear. In this movie, we see things mostly from Arrietty’s point of view and I won’t lie, every time they left their little cocoon, my heart went crazy staccato in my chest especially with Niya (the cat) lurking.

    Sho & Arrietty

In candid dialogue and moments, we get to know about our characters and see the challenges they face. Our human boy, Sho, from the moment I saw him gave off that sweet vibe. His mannerisms and far-off aura told me a little bit about him even before I got to the part of knowing his heart condition. It was also a little bit ironic to me because this guy had a heart big enough to accommodate strange things but it was sick.

    IMG_4719.jpeg

    Screenshot

Arrietty the curious one, who later let her curiousity get the best of her. Of course, she was as careful as can be, but still the heart want what it wants.

    My Feelings & Thoughts

The movie in general was hauntingly beautiful. I love how even if it was fantasy and fictional, the writer did not go above and beyond with the “happy ending”. Disney would give us the cliche tale of either the girl finding a magic potion to become bigger or vice versa. I guess this is why you can never put “cartoons” and “Anime” in the same category no matter how “reasonable” it seems.

    IMG_4720.jpeg

    Screenshot

What some would claim is a sad end, satisfied me immensely. There was a clear line between the characters and instead of moving the whole thing side ways, the writer gave it raw, simple and compelling. All there was to it was a friendship that would never be forgotten. This, like I mentioned in the beginning, is bittersweet.

    What I Did Not Like

Of course I have moments that ticked me off. There were parts that showed the blatant disregard for boundaries when it came to humans. One was Sho’s move towards the borrowers, when he replaced their kitchen. This was an act of love on his part but it felt like a violation of sacred space to the people in question. Not holding it against him either, he was a child and excited to finally be able to protect something despite his condition.

    IMG_4718.jpeg

    Screenshot

The second was the Haru lady. Not everything can be kept but it shows even in society today how we want to hold on to the shiny things and people that are meant to be free. I can’t tell if Haru didn’t like the borrowers but her actions spoke volumes of her thoughts towards them. Her nosiness made me hiss a lot!

    Conclusion

I recommend this movie. It’s only 1hr 34mins and can be found on Netflix. It’s a PG rated movie and can be seen by kids as well. In fact, I recommend they see it. It’s a good contribution to their imagination.

    Overview/Resumen

I found this film while browsing through the Netflix catalog and since I've liked all the Ghibli Studios films so far, I decided to give it a chance. This beautiful Film, like almost all Ghibli films presents us with two parallel worlds, that of humans and that of the Borrowers (also called “loaners” or “diminutives”) The first place we see Sho, a boy who is sick at heart who finds it necessary to spend his summer vacation in the same house where his mother spent her vacations as a child, in the countryside, there he notices something peculiar, He confirms what his mother once told him, that the house is inhabited by little people who come out from time to time to take things they need, such as sugar cubes, these little people try to hide from humans for fear that they will harm them, and when they know they have been discovered they decide to leave the house, however Sho shows them that they can trust him.

    My Opinion/Mi Opinión

Also, as in all Ghibli films, nature has much prominence in the film, as an indirect way to teach us that we are part of it and therefore we must preserve it, so the characters move through very green environments and the sounds of birds and crickets have much relevance. On the other hand there is something that stands out in the plot, in the scenes when we see Arriety accompanying his father on the expedition we realize that the objects that for the rest of the humans are totally everyday, for them are huge and extraordinary, often represent obstacles that they have to overcome, the world of humans is presented to them as giant and threatening, but at the same time it is also a place of opportunities where they can get everything they need. On the other hand, Sho (the boy) despite being human and that in the eyes of the Borrowers is supposed to be strong and threatening, in reality is shown as a weak and sad child, he is sick and all his life he has felt relegated because he can not play with other children or make a normal life, for that reason insists on helping Arriety, although she runs away from him out of fear, Sho wants to feel useful.

The characters experience a great development, especially Arrietey and Sho, she for example gets rid of prejudices towards humans, discovering that there are not only those who are ambitious and evil, but those who are willing to help the Borrowers, Sho for his part at the beginning is apathetic about the surgery he has to undergo, believing that he will not survive, but when he manages to help Arriety, he feels useful, that his life has meaning and then he is filled with enthusiasm to face his illness and overcome it successfully.

I think, from a child's point of view this film is very appealing because it implants that desire to have “Borrowers” at home and to be able to help them have an easier life, which in turn reaffirms their sense of empathy towards others and helps them understand that in the world what is easy to achieve and obtain for some may be very difficult for others.

And well, in conclusion I can tell you that it is a quite entertaining film, with a beautiful soundtrack, a lot of attention to detail in the visual section and a beautiful story with many valuable messages for life 😃 I sincerely hope you can watch it and enjoy it as much as I did. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you, may you receive lots of health and blessings for the rest of this year and also for the next one. 😊

  5. Reseña: El mundo secreto de Arrietty // Review: The Secret World of Arrietty@presidentx1735d

Every Ghibli film is a complete experience, or at least that's what tends to happen to me with every title I see. In the case of this film, it shows us some little humans, in a gentle story but with its reflections and unforgettable scenes. The movie was released in 2010, directed by Hiromasa Yonabashi based on a book, "The Borrowers" by Mary Norton.

    image.png Fuente

The Borrowers are tiny human beings who live hidden in houses, managing to live thanks to things borrowed from the houses they inhabit. Arriety is the daughter of the tiny family. She will live an adventure with Sho, the young man who lives in the house with her aunts, because she is accidentally seen.

I won't give away more of the plot, as it is a short movie, 95 minutes. It is a nice story with little action, but it seeks to show the world and way of life of the little ones, while telling us about friendship, environmentalism and the will to live. The highlight in my opinion is the beautiful animation, which dazzles by the detail in many parts of the film. Another good point is the main songs, especially the one that closes the film.

I have to say that despite the short length, you get attached to the characters and to a certain extent it can touch your emotional fiber. The downside is that the main adventure doesn't take much time, leaving you wanting more.

The Borrowers de Mary Norton Fuente

I recommend it if you like movies with good animation and a relaxed plot.

Hello to the entire Hive community. This time I come to show you my new discovery in Japanese animation, it is about Arriety and the world of the diminutives.

Ghibli studios have been known for showing us many of the best anime films of all time, such as Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, or Howl's Moving Castle. This animation has many similarities with Princess Mononoke thanks to its ecological touch represented by an imaginary species.

Arriety is a tiny girl, just a few inches tall, an endangered species that borrows things from humans to survive without having to be detected by them. A human should never see a tiny one because if that happens they must seek another refuge and flee from that house.

    image.png

    Source

The truth is that Arriety lives with her mother and father in a house in the woods that they thought would be uninhabited forever. To Arrriety's surprise, she meets a human child and he manages to see her, but she sneakily flees.

The sudden encounter soon ceases to be and Arriety finds more and more that human boy who tries to search for her but in peace. This boy named Shon represents the human interested in ecology, the protectionist human, the human who wants to take care of the environment. Arriety would represent nature and all those species on the verge of extinction.

    image.png

Some of the most brilliant dialogues are about the extinction of species and the number of human beings inhabiting this planet, consuming resources and making other species disappear due to the forced ecological changes that have been made.

This story is simple pear beautiful. The tiny ones remind me of fairies but without wings, they are just very small human beings who seek refuge in abandoned houses and have the reputation of stealing things that they say are just borrowed things. The innocence of the tiny is beautiful, they are a part closer to nature than we humans.

Shon is a sick character, looking for a bit of adventure. He is always bedridden due to his heart disease and according to the story he will not live long but by this I mean that Shon is a character who is amazed by the tiny ones, especially Arriety, whom he finds very beautiful.

Arriety is a bold, intelligent girl, capable of incredible maneuvers and very brave when it comes to defending her people. In short, an exemplary girl and a classic from the Gihbli Universe.

This type of film makes me think a lot about what we do with the environment and the number of extinct species that disappeared because of us. We must urgently become more aware of all this. I have always been in favor of eliminating the toxins that exist because of the industries, mainly the oil industry, but the interests of the oil-producing countries make us look away when this type of issue is discussed.

    image.png

Climate change is a real thing and so is the extinction of multiple species. As the dominant species in this world, thanks to our intelligence (which we do not always use) we must be responsible for all the nature that surrounds us. Of plants, animals, air, and seas. We have neglected our planet too much and that will take its toll sooner or later, but I think we are on time. We need to do it!

Technological progress can change all this, like electric cars but if governments continue to intervene it will be useless. We must put selfishness aside and think more about our planet, it is the only one we have and it is beautiful.

I hope you liked this review and my opinion about this novel and the ecological theme that I wrote. I have always been interested in this and I hope to do my bit to help both animals and defenseless children around the world. If you have already seen the movie I hope you tell me what you think, I am eager to read your comments. Greetings boys and girls.

Saludos chicos y chicas.

  7. An Under Discussed Ghibli Film - The Secret World of Arrietty@dlstudios2791d

This is one of those Studio Ghibli films that doesn't get a whole lot of discussion on it, and I think that really is a shame. Written, but not directed, by Miyazaki this movie really does have all the same qualities and charm that make Ghibli Films fantastic.

With a story based on The Borrowers, Arrietty is just beginning to learn the craft of borrowing from the Beans, the name they use to refer to humans. The Borrowers are very tiny people who live underneath the floor boards of the home, borrowing what they need to survive. When a sickly child moves in, he discovers them, and to keep safe Arrietty's family discusses the possibility of having to leave the house.

And the remainder of the plot revolves around that simple premise and the interactions between Arrietty herself and Shawn, the sickly boy mentioned earlier. This really is where the story shines as their relationship feels very genuine and charming. The strange part about all of that is that there are actually very few scenes the two share together, and it's not even until the third time they cross paths Arrietty even says anything to him.

There is an interesting dynamic that even though the boy is sickly, to the Beans he is still this towering giant that could threaten them if he wanted. At the same time he sees the things Arrietty does, and is amazed at the strength of people so small and fragile, even more so then himself. Though by saying that I do kind of give a way a theme and resolution to the show, but it's something that's pretty easy to see coming.

The best thing about the show is how it makes everything feel big. We see Arrietty and her father enter the kitchen, and the way the show pans out to show the surroundings in relation to them, as wells all the little sounds you hear in a night time kitchen being made to feel epic and booming, it really feels as though you are seeing all of these mundane things you are accustomed to through the eyes of the borrowers.

The show is full of great sounds that make everything feel alive, and one of my favorites is a bit odd. At one point early on Arrietty picks up a pin and puts it through her shirt like a sword. And whenever she draws it out you get the sound of a sword unsheathing. You feel like this little pin is actually a potential weapon in her hands.

There are parts of the plot that feel a bit overly convenient, like Spiller showing up when he does to tell the family that there are other borrowers out there, and can help them move to a new home. It's not as prevalent as it is in older Studio Ghibli films, but it is there and noticeable all the same.

As mentioned at the beginning, despite only handling the Screenplay according to the credits, the movie still has all the style and charm of any of the films Miyazaki has actually directed. The art and animation are top notch, the scenes are crafted amazingly well, and the world is imaginative and full of charm. It's definitely a movie that can hold it's own with some of Ghibli's finest movies, and worth checking out if you haven't.
