The truth is, I'm not a big fan of love stories or romantic dramas. I think I'm more of a Studio Ghibli fan, and that's why I decided to sit down and watch this film. I knew what to expect, but I didn't mind because I was sure the film's quality in every way would be excellent. "Whisper of the Heart" is a story that combines a very human plot full of emotions and feelings with the fantastical elements that Miyazaki has always accustomed us to. It's true that fantasy is usually central to everything, but in this case, it isn't. Shizuku, our protagonist, is a young woman who, because of her age, experiences many things that we've all felt at some point.

La verdad es que no soy muy fanático de las historias de amor o los dramas románticos, creo que soy más fan del Studio Ghibli y es por esta razón que decidí sentarme a ver este film, porque sabía lo que iba a ver pero igual no me importó ya que la calidad de la película en sí en todos los sentidos iba ser muy buena. "Susurros del corazón" es una historia que involucra tanto una trama muy humana llena de emociones y sentimientos como la parte fantasiosa a la que Miyazaki siempre nos ha tenido acostumbrados. Si que es verdad que generalmente la fantasía es el centro de todo, pero en este caso no es así ya que Shizuku, nuestra protagonista, es una joven que por su edad la veremos experimentar muchas cosas que todos en el algún momento hemos sentido.

As I was saying, Shizuku is an average student who enjoys poetry, singing, and reading—especially reading. She spends most of her time in the library reading until one day she realizes that all the books she borrows have already been read by someone else. This sparks her curiosity because it means there might be a connection between them. As life seems to be full of coincidences, she eventually meets Seiji Amasawa, a young man who aspires to be a luthier. At first, their first impressions might not be the best, but she soon realizes how much being around Seiji has changed her in terms of personal growth.

Como les decía Shizuku es una estudiante promedio a la que le gusta la poesía, el canto y leer, sobretodo leer. Ella se la pasa en la biblioteca leyendo hasta que un día se da cuenta que todos los libros que ella pide han sido previamente por leídos otra persona. Esto hace que la curiosidad en ella crezca mucho porque significa que puede que haya una conexión entre ellos dos. Como la vida parece ser un saco de coincidencias ella eventualmente da con Seiji Amasawa, un joven que aspira a ser luthier. Al principio puede que las primeras impresiones no sean las mejores pero después ella se dará cuenta lo mucho que la ha cambiado estar cerca de Seiji en lo que a crecimiento personal se refiere.

The plot is actually quite simple; what matters is the message and how the characters develop. Shizuku is just a teenager living her life day by day. As passionate as she is about things, she hasn't considered what she wants to be or what her dream might be, and this didn't bother her at first. But after meeting Seiji, she began to see things differently. Why? Because he's the complete opposite. He's a young man who knows what he wants and is very clear about it. We see how that certainty may have rubbed off on Shizuku, causing her to take things a little more seriously and to heart.

En realidad la trama es muy simple, lo que vale es el mensaje y la forma en cómo se van desarrollando los personajes. Shizuku es apenas una adolescente que lo que está haciendo es vivir su vida día a día, por más apasionada que sea con las cosas no se ha planteado que quiere ser o cuál podría ser su sueño y eso al principio no la atormentaba pero después de conocer a Seiji si comenzó a ver las cosas de otra forma. Por qué? - pues porque él es todo lo contrario, es un joven que sabe lo que quiere y lo tiene bien claro entonces vemos como esa seguridad puede que haya contagiado un poco a Shizuku haciendo que se tome las cosas un poco más en serio y más a pecho.

At the end of the day, it's a story of personal growth, of pursuing dreams, and of dealing with almost self-imposed social and personal pressure. As you can see, the story is incredibly realistic because many of you reading this have probably experienced it. But fantasy isn't absent from this story either, as Shizuku wants to be a writer, so she uses a figure from an antique shop, "The Baron," to bring to life the characters and the plot that's emerging from her mind and dreams. This materializes in scenes where we see the two of them flying through the skies, and especially in the story she was told about the origin of the sculpture.

Al final del día es una historia de superación personal, de persecución de los sueños y de como lidiar con una presión social/personal casi que autoimpuesta. Como ven la historia es super realista porque probablemente muchos de los que están leyendo han o hemos experimentado esto. Pero la fantasía no es ajena en esta historia y es que Shizuku quiere ser escritora por lo que se apoya en una figura de una tienda de antigüedades, "El Barón", para darle vida a los personajes y a la trama que está saliendo de su mente y sus sueños. Esto se materializa en unas escenas en donde los vemos a los dos volando por los cielos y sobretodo en la historia que le fue contada a ella sobre el origen de dicha escultura.

As always, the animation is top-notch. A film made in 1995 boasts cinematography that looks like a real photograph. It's incredibly detailed, vibrant, and textured; the attention to detail in the animation is what truly gives these films their added value. At times, I almost forgot about Shizuku's "drama" with Seiji thanks to all of this, and because it's not exactly a romantic story. It has its nuances, especially towards the end, but it's not a cloying plot.

Como siempre la animación es muy top, una película que fue hecha en 1995 tiene unas cinematografías que parecen una foto real. Muy llena de detalles, de color, de texturas, la animación en las pequeñas cosas es lo que creo que le da un gran valor agregado a estas películas. Por momentos me olvidaba de los "dramas" de Shizuku con Seiji gracias a todo esto y porque realmente tampoco es que es una historia tan romantica que digamos, si tiene sus matices, sobretodo con el final, pero no es una trama que empalaga.

The incredibly well-developed and endearing characters are another major factor in Studio Ghibli's success, because even a simple cat is imbued with such personality that it becomes a protagonist. A great film by the master Miyazaki. It's one of his most well-known and frequently mentioned works, making it a must-see; it's well worth watching. It's a simple yet profound story, and the moral or lesson is very useful for everyone. It's less than two hours long; I've included the trailer below.

Los personajes super bien desarrollados y entrañables, otro de los grandes factores de éxito de Studio Ghibli porque hasta un simple gato lo llenan de una personalidad tal que se convierte en protagonista. Una gran película del maestro Miyazaki. Es de las más conocidas y nombradas por lo que es un deber verla, vale mucho la pena. Es una historia sencilla pero profunda al mismo tiempo y es que la moraleja o enseñanza es muy util para todos. Dura menos de dos horas, les dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
