The eternal conflicts between humans and other species seem destined to never end. We, as inhabitants of this planet, appear to be destined for the worst, given our constant urge to seize by force what doesn't belong to us, much less what is truly ours. This is another great work from Studio Ghibli, not as old as some of their other films, but just as spectacular. This time, Miyazaki brings us a story where tolerance, respect, ignorance, and the fear of the unknown are the central themes. It's a highly entertaining film with a healthy dose of action, adventure, and drama; in short, it has something for everyone.

Las eternas peleas entre los humanos y cualquier especie parece que nunca van a dejar de surgir y es que nosotros como habitantes de este planeta pareciera que estamos destinados a ser de lo peor ya que tenemos la constante manía de querer tomar por la fuerza aquello que no nos corresponde y mucho menos es nuestro. Estamos ante otra gran obra del Studio Ghibli, no tan antigua como el resto, pero igual de espectacular. En esta ocasión Miyazaki nos trae una historia en donde la tolerancia, el respeto, la ignorancia y el miedo a lo desconocido son las banderas de la historia. Es una película muy entretenida que tiene sus buenas dosis de acción, aventura y drama; es decir, es para todos los gustos.

It all begins with Ashitaka, a prince from a distant tribe who, while defending his people, was cursed by a possessed boar. To find a cure and save his life, he must travel far west to a forest inhabited by hundreds of spirits who live there and protect it from humans. To the prince's astonishment, upon arriving, he discovers that these forest spirits are at war with the humans, who intend to seize all the forest's resources.

Todo esto comienza con Ashitaka, él es un príncipe de una tribus lejana quien por defender a su gente terminó maldecido por un jabalí que estaba endemoniado. Para tratar de buscar la cura y poder salvar su vida tiene que viajar muy lejos al oeste en donde existe un bosque el cual es habitado por cientos de espíritus que viven en él y lo cuidan de los humanos. El asombro de este príncipe es que al llegar, oh sorpresa, estos espíritus del bosque están en guerra con los humanos porque estos pretenden quedarse con todos los recursos del bosque.

But that's not all. Ashitaka also meets San, "Princess Mononoke," a human raised by wolves who became part of the pack. She quickly understands that the prince isn't the enemy and that together they will have to fight against the other humans stationed in a mining village, who seek to exploit the precious forest. As you can see, it all comes down to human greed and avarice for what isn't theirs, solely for personal gain and without considering the consequences of their actions. It's a fairly common plot, but it's still interesting because it combines an adventure with a strong social message. The underlying question is: "Why can't we live in harmony?"

Pero todo no acaba ahí, Ashitaka también conoce a San, "la princesa Mononoke", una humana que fue criada por los lobos y que convirtió en parte de la manada. Rápidamente ella entenderá que el príncipe no es el enemigo y que juntos van a tener que pelear en contra de los otros humanos apostados en una aldea minera y que son los que buscan explotar el preciado bosque. Como ven todo se trata de la avaricia y codicia del humano por aquello que no es suyo únicamente para el beneficio propio y sin pensar en las consecuencias de sus actos. Es un trama bastante común pero igual no deja de ser interesante porque es una combinación entre una aventura con un alta carga de conciencia porque si, el fondo de todo es: "Por qué no se puede vivir en armonía?".

Beyond all that, there's clearly a fantastical element that envelops the presence of these spirits and the forest animals, blending them with Japanese folklore. This is perhaps what I like most about it because when films touch on cultural themes from Japan and the feudal era, I find them incredibly enriching; it's like adding a huge extra layer to everything. The film is never boring because there's always a question to be answered or a problem hanging in the air. Princess Mononoke came out in 1997, which explains why its animation is slightly more polished than the others; it's still a spectacle to watch these films. I know I repeat myself a lot, but that distinction always needs to be made.

Además de todo evidentemente hay una fantasía que envuelve toda la presencia de estos espíritus y los animales del bosque con el folclore japonés. Esto quizás es de lo que más me gusta porque cuando los films tocan temas culturales del Japón y de las épocas feudales me parecen super enriquecedores, es como sumarle un extra muy grande a todo. La película nunca es aburrida porque siempre hay una cuestión por resolver o un problema en el aire. La princesa Mononoke salió en 1997, de ahí a que su animación esté ligeramente más pulida que las demás; sigue siendo un espectáculo ver estas películas, me repito mucho lo se, pero siempre hay que decir esa salvedad.

To wrap things up, I'd like to say that another characteristic of Studio Ghibli is its characters and their ability to become endearing. In this particular film, I didn't feel that connection with any of them, perhaps with the wolves because of their immense protectiveness and because deep down they may have understood that it's possible to live alongside humans despite being so close—after all, they raised San. This isn't to say that the characters are bad, but for me, it was a purely adventure and fantasy film with a very beautiful and insightful message. Highly recommended; I think many have already seen it, but if you haven't, it's well worth watching. It's over two hours long. I've included the trailer below.

Para ir terminando decir que otra de las cosas que caracteriza al Studio Ghibli son sus personajes y la capacidad que tienen para volverse entrañables. En este film en particular no sentí esa conexión con ninguno, de repente con los lobos por su inmensa capacidad protectora y porque en el fondo puede que hayan entendido que es posible vivir con los humanos estando tan cerca, por algo criaron a San. Esto no quiere decir que sus personajes sea malos pero para mi fue una película netamente llena de aventura y fantasía con un muy bonito y acertado mensaje. Super recomendada, creo que muchos ya la han visto pero sino lo has hecho, vale mucho la pena. Dura más de dos horas. Te dejo el tráiler por acá abajo.
