When discussing Neagley, it is impossible not to mention Reacher as well; since they inhabit the same universe, comparisons are inevitable—however odious they may be. Before going further, it is worth noting that Reacher is currently in production for its fifth season and a sixth has already been confirmed, so we will be seeing plenty more of him for the foreseeable future. But can the same be said for his partner? That remains unknown; Prime is still evaluating her performance, though there appears to be some optimism. As the title suggests, Neagley is not Reacher—a distinction that needs to be made for anyone expecting the same level of action found in the series starring the giant former Army Major. In essence, they are the same and share the same background, but their approaches differ greatly; this is because Neagley is a person with a life of her own, unlike Reacher, who is something of a ghost—a man without even a home.
Cuando hablamos de Neagley es imposible no hacerlo también de Reacher y es que al pertenecer al mismo universo hace que compararlas sea inevitable por muy odioso que sea. Antes de seguir hay que decir que Reacher está en producción de su quinta temporada y ya fue confirmada una sexta así que habrá más de él por un buen rato. Pero, podemos decir lo mismo de su compañera? - no se sabe, Prime todavía está evaluando como le está yendo aunque al parecer hay cierto optimismo. Tal y como digo en el titulo Neagley no es Reacher y esto hay que aclararlo por si eres de los que espera que la serie tenga el mismo nivel de acción que la del gigante ex Mayor del ejercito; en esencia son lo mismo, el trasfondo es igual pero las formas son muy diferentes y esto pasa porque Neagley es alguien, a diferencia de Reacher que es una especie de fantasma que ni casa tiene.
Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) is an Army veteran who served in the same unit as Reacher; consequently, her behavior, her way of doing things, and perhaps even aspects of her personality bear a resemblance to his. The difference is that she has settled in Chicago as a private investigator and has a home, close family, and friends. One of those friends, Tommy Crane, dies under strange circumstances, prompting Neagley to start asking questions, as Tommy—a childhood friend—was important to her. He was not the type of man to experiment with drugs or anything of the sort, yet he was under the influence on the night he died, and the manner of his death raises many questions. Neagley soon discovers that, prior to his death, Tommy had been living on a farm—or in a community—that has all the hallmarks of a cult.
Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) es una veterana del ejercito que estuvo en la misma unidad de Reacher por lo que su comportamiento, forma de hacer las cosas y quizás algo de su personalidad se parece un poco a la de él. La diferencia es que ella se asentó en Chicago como investigadora privada, tiene casa, familia cercana y amigos. Uno de esos amigos, Tommy Crane, muere en extrañas circunstancias, lo que hace que Neagley se comience a hacer preguntas ya que Tommy era importante para ella, eran amigos de la infancia. Él no era un hombre de probar drogas ni nada por el estilo pero la noche de su muerte estaba drogado y por la forma en como muere se generan muchas dudas. Rápidamente Nagley se entera que antes de morir Tommy estaba viviendo en una granja/comunidad que tiene todos los números para ser considerada una secta.
From that point on, she begins to pull at the thread, uncovering details such as a potential illegal drug ring and conspiracies involving the facility's operators and wealthy individuals. Neagley won't be alone; she is joined by a local police officer, an apprentice investigator, and a street kid who ultimately proves vital to the entire operation. As the clues come together, the true nature of what is happening at the farm is revealed, and we see the lengths she must go to in order to dismantle the operation and secure justice for her deceased friend. As you can see, the premise is very similar to the Reacher formula: a problem or situation arises, Neagley steps in, and she resolves it. The key difference lies in how she goes about it. She isn't an unbridled action hero who spends every episode beating up bad guys—though, mind you, she does engage in combat in the series; rather, because she is an investigator, the narrative leans more in that direction, which ultimately sets the pace.
A partir de allí ella empieza a tirar del hilo y va descubriendo cosas como por ejemplo una posible red de fármacos ilegales y conspiraciones entre los que manejan dicho lugar y gente con mucho dinero. Neagley no estará sola, la acompañarán un policía local, una aprendiz que trabaja con ella como investigadora y un joven de la calle que al final va a terminar siendo vital para todo esto. Empezando a unir todas las pistas se va a ir descubriendo que es lo que realmente pasa en esa granja y veremos todo lo que tendrá que hacer ella para poder desmantelar aquello y darle justicia a su amigo muerto. Como ven el trasfondo es muy parecido al de Reacher, hay un problema, una situación que resolver, aparece Neagley y lo soluciona. El tema acá es el como lo hace y es en este punto en donde está la mayor diferencia. Ella no es una mujer de acción desbocada ni de moler a golpes en todos los episodios a los malos, que ojo, si lo hace en la serie; al ser investigadora las cosas se mueven más en esa dirección lo que al final marca el ritmo.
Neagley is more "human" than Reacher; she has unfinished business with her ailing father—in fact, part of the series revolves around that. She builds strong bonds with her colleagues—close relationships, despite her naturally cold demeanor and tendency to keep people at arm's length. The story unfolds primarily through investigation, yet the series is neither boring nor slow-paced—far from it; when Neagley needs to use force, she does so, and with devastating effectiveness. The plot is gripping because it involves a cult—and if there is one thing I loathe, it is those "communities" led by narcissists who fancy themselves prophets or gods, claiming they will enlighten the people who innocently fall into their clutches. While the ending is fairly predictable, the real value lies in the journey taken to reach that resolution.
Neagley es más "humana" que Reacher, tiene asuntos pendientes con su padre enfermo, de hecho parte de la serie gira en torno a eso; entabla buena relación con sus compañeros, una relación cercana a pesar de que ella por naturaleza es fría y trata siempre de alejarse de las personas. La forma en como se va resolviendo todo es netamente a través de la investigación, pero por esto no quiere decir que la serie sea aburrida ni lenta, nada que ver; cuando Neagley tiene que usar la fuerza la va a usar y lo hace con creces. La trama engancha porque hay una secta involucrada y si hay algo que detesto en esta vida son todas estas "comunidades" con sus líderes narcisistas que creen que son un profeta/Dios que llevarán a la luz a las personas que terminan cayendo, inocentemente, en estas redes. Creo que es fácil deducir que va a pasar hacia el final por lo que creo que se debería de valorar es el camino que se recorrió para llegar a la resolución de todo.
These police action series don't rely heavily on acting performances. Maria Sten makes an effort to inject drama when the plot calls for it—because, yes, there are scenes where the situation overwhelms her and she has to deliver a strong performance. Her relationship with her father is good but sometimes complicated, making the final scene that resolves that conflict quite heartfelt; even I found it moving. It’s really cool how the story takes interesting turns that help us better understand certain characters' behaviors; we learn the reasons behind various things, which is something I appreciate. The supporting cast complements the lead well—everyone does their job—and from what I gather, if there is a second season, the team will remain intact. Personally, I really liked the approach and the execution; creating a spin-off of such a successful series can sometimes end in disaster, but that wasn't the case with Neagley. I highly recommend it. Do you need to have seen Reacher to watch it? No, not at all. It consists of eight episodes. I’m including the trailer here so you can see what it’s all about.
Estas series de acción policial no se basan mucho en las actuaciones. Maria Sten hace el esfuerzo de inyectarle drama cuando la trama lo pide, porque si, hay escenas en donde las situaciones la superan y tiene que apelar a una buena interpretación. La relación con su padre es buena pero complicada a veces por lo que esa escena final que significa el cierre de ese conflicto es bastante sentida, hasta a mi me pareció conmovedora. Es muy cool que la historia de unos giros interesantes para entender mejor el comportamientos de ciertos personajes, sabremos el porque de varias cosas y eso es algo que se valora. El resto de los actores son muy buenos complementos, todos hacen su trabajo; por lo que entiendo y de haber una segunda temporada, se mantendrán como equipo. Personalmente me gustó mucho, el enfoque y la forma, hacer un spin-off de una serie tan exitosa a veces termina en desastre pero Neagley no fue así. La recomiendo mucho. Tienen que haber visto Reacher para verla? - no, en lo absoluto. Son 8 capítulos. Les dejo el tráiler para que vean de que va todo.
