Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
**Hello friends, good vibes everyone.
Ok, finally one of the premieres that I personally most expected of this year arrived from the moment they announced that a new movie of this mythical franchise would come out, nothing more and nothing less than Mortal Kombat. The closest precedent we have is from 1995, which in itself and for that moment was a "decent" movie until two years later the second part came out called "Mortal Kombat: Annihilation" but unfortunately it was terribly bad.
It is for this reason that as a fan of this story, if you expected a movie that would honor such a great video game that so many followers around the world have. You have to understand that being a movie of fights and combats we cannot expect anything more than that, blows, kicks and blood. So without further ado, let's see how this new film is.
- Resumen // Summary.
There is a truth that is the size of a mountain and it is that "curse" that exists when they insist on wanting to make a movie based on a video game and it happens that they are generally a failure, except in very small occasions. As I said before, the 1995 film was one that people took a lot of affection because it certainly embraced part of the essence of the game until the 2021 one arrived, which, according to me, far surpassed it.
This story breaks the cliché of "Bloody Combat" controlled by Shang Tsung in an environment also controlled by him. This time we are in the "outworld" where this sorcerer is the one who sends his assassins to search for the chosen champions before the tournament starts. Champions who are chosen through a dragon-shaped mark on their bodies.
Something interesting about the plot is that they incorporate characters who are not part of the game but who end up being protagonists and to understand this you have to go back more than 300 years and thus know the whole issue of a centennial lineage that the film is responsible for explain very well so you don't have to worry too much about that.
The story continues and Sonya Blade appears, one of the best characters that MK brings us, a former United States military woman who is obsessed with everything that has to do with these mysterious brands and the famous deadly tournament to the point that she is convinced that even without owning the happy brand, he is capable of solving the whole issue and being part of these fights.
Another of the jewels of the film is "Kano", this mythical mercenary and murderer with laser rays in his eyes is one of those characters that you hate the first moment you see him but you know that without him the story would most likely not have worked perfectly as indeed he did, he is special because of that eternal rivalry he has with Sonya. Characters like "Jax" and the god "Rayden" also appear but they are more like secondary characters that do not give much weight to the story itself.
We continue with Liu Kang and Kung Lao who, like Jax, were a little behind with less important roles, that may be the only complaint that I would put to this film. They are one of the most emblematic characters but here there is not so much prominence on their part but if something needs to be clarified, the fights they give when it comes to them are INCREDIBLE, one of the best things they will see, especially from the side of Kung Lao with his famous hat, awesome.
But the icing on the cake, the jewel in the crown without a doubt goes to Sub Zero and Scorpion, the true protagonists who with their epic fights teleported us to those moments when we are playing this video game on any of the consoles. A rivalry that goes beyond the centuries and that undoubtedly gives a little more character and personality to the whole plot, making this movie not just one of the many and has an interesting background.
And as a final but no less important part that this new installment of Mortal Kombat does not leave behind, they are the famous "Fatalities"; really how good they are and how well they were introduced to each character. Throughout the plot each of them will be seen making their famous moves to end the lives of their rivals, a true point in favor that in past installments was not seen much.
- Opinion.
Generally speaking, it is an excellent movie for all of us who grew up being franchise lovers. You have to be clear and understand something, this is a movie of fights, blood, kicks and fatalities, expecting something different does not make sense.
Now, if I lacked a little more fluency in certain fights, because let's see, if it is a film of pure combat at least I hope they are extraordinary. Don't get me wrong, they are well done but they could have been a couple of steps above considering the casting. For example, the character of Sub Zero, Joe Taslim, is an actor who fights in a unique way, you can see him in a series called "Warrior" (which I will talk about soon), and the truth is that his scenes They are of another level.
A movie that can be seen and is totally enjoyable, I liked it a lot and I am thankful that it did not disappoint me at all. For putting a score I give it a 7.5 / 10 because it is very worth seeing. It is available on HBO Max and runs for almost 2 hours.
