Hello friends, good vibes to everyone.
Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
It is October 8th, and the path we’ve been traveling has taken us through almost every facet of horror; I think we still have yet to cover possessions and the more supernatural side of things, but we’ll get there eventually. Today’s story is the kind people really love—they find it fascinating because understanding the human mind can sometimes be a real challenge. There are two main themes at play in this film: the prejudice we can show when we jump to conclusions, and the fact that we should NEVER opt for "automatic solidarity" when deciding who is the victim and who is the perpetrator—that is what authorities and investigations are for. I coined that term myself because it’s a phenomenon that happens so often these days, especially on social media, and this film illustrates it perfectly. To give you an idea, Strange Darling is about serial killings.
This is a suspense, horror, and crime thriller set in the remote wilds of Oregon. It begins with a chase: a man is pursuing a woman who appears to be fleeing, while he is intent on catching her at any cost. Yet, this follows an earlier encounter between the two at a local hotel—a consensual tryst between adults that had started out as a rather intense night. Suddenly, however, everything shifts; the atmosphere turns eerie, and what began as a playful encounter transforms into a game where survival is the only thing that matters, and escaping the other becomes the absolute priority.
All of this leads to a chase—both by car and on foot—that ends at a country house deep in the local woods. At first, you might think you grasp what is going on, but let me tell you: none of it is true. One of the film's most incredible aspects is how it plays with the viewer's perspective; the plot gradually peels back layers—much like an onion—allowing us to see and discover what is truly happening. The plot twist is massive, completely shifting one's view of the story and its characters. I think this is the coolest part of the film: it dares to challenge the preconceived notions people hold about situations like this. We tend to take for granted who is suffering, who the hero is, and—above all—who the bad guy, or villain, is. In real life, things aren't black and white; we have to accept the existence of shades of gray and acknowledge their validity. In fact, a character actually dies because of those very assumptions; blind, automatic solidarity is a dangerous thing.
The film was shot on 35mm, so the visuals are spectacular—especially the cinematography. As a photographer myself, I really enjoyed watching it; the framing and composition were excellent—aspects rarely discussed in film, yet crucial, believe me. The plot is packed with tension from start to finish, maintaining a constant sense of intrigue that keeps the viewer guessing, as we don't know what will happen or who the villain is until the very end, creating a high level of suspense. There is also a unique narrative approach: the story isn't told linearly or chronologically. It consists of six chapters, yet it begins with the third. This turns the experience into a puzzle, where the goal is to piece together the context of the relationship between the two protagonists. At its core, the film is violent—not merely because of graphic scenes (though there are certainly some), but due to the nature of the situation itself: ultimately, one of the characters is a serial killer who will kill to survive.
Another strong point, aside from the plot, is the acting. Willa Fitzgerald stars as "The Lady." Her ability to portray such a complex character is top-notch; "The Lady" is a truly unique individual, so the range of emotions she has to navigate is vast. But it’s not just her—Kyle Gallner, playing "the demon," also does a great job; while his performance might not quite match Willa's, together they manage to create an atmosphere thick with tension, hatred, and vengeance. I have to say, this film was a pleasant surprise; I didn't expect the way it was structured, the plot, or—of course—the ending. There are several plot twists, and honestly, each one is better than the last. It’s a thought-provoking story, and you’ll realize that the fewer preconceived notions you have going in, the better you’ll be able to appreciate it. Highly recommended. It runs just over an hour and a half. I’m including the trailer here so you can get hooked and decide to watch it.
Alright folks, that’s all for today; I hope you enjoyed it. ¡Sending a big hug to everyone, see you next time!
