Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.

It is Day 10 of "spooky season," during which we have been discussing horror movies in all their forms—films that, given their reputation and significance, I really should have watched long ago. Today, we are looking at a classic, though not an old one; the film is from 2014, meaning twelve years have passed before I finally sat down to enjoy this story. The Babadook is one of those horror films with a distinct 80s atmosphere, capturing the classic essence of movies from that era. I say this because of the visuals, the concept, the scenes, and the cinematography overall; it involves an aesthetic quality that is hard to put into words, but once you watch it, you will understand exactly what I mean. This is undeniably pure-bred horror, where fear and suspense take hold of a family and their home.

We meet a mother and son, Amelia (Essie Davis) and Samuel (Noah Wiseman), who live alone following the death of the husband in an accident. Samuel struggles with behavioral issues—he is hyperactive and violent, and he fails to get along with other children, leading to trouble at school. Matters have reached a point where his mother, Amelia, has begun medicating him in an attempt to calm him down. The root cause of Samuel's distress is "The Babadook," a monster from a "children's" book found in their home; the boy insists the creature is real and is living in the house with them. The boy is so tormented and terrified that his behavior has changed completely.

Of course, Samuel isn't the only one with problems; Amelia has them too, though she masks them a bit better. She refuses to believe that the Babadook exists, yet one of the monster's rules is that the more you deny its existence, the more undeniable everything becomes. As time goes on, Amelia begins to experience strange occurrences in her home and senses an evil presence around her, all while the grief over her husband's death and her depression take a heavy toll on her mind. From this point on, we watch as mother and son confront the monster while simultaneously battling their own inner demons. The plot is compelling because, right from the start, it compels us to accept that the monster is real—a paranormal entity capable of inflicting genuine harm. While that is true, the film ultimately demands a much deeper interpretation than simply viewing the situation as a struggle against an "entity."

When I speak of "a metaphor" in the title, I am referring to the significance of The Babadook in the protagonists' lives. The creature can be seen as a representation of every trauma, fear, and bout of depression—and even unresolved grief. This is further reinforced by the ending, which I won't discuss here to avoid major spoilers. Throughout the film, however, there is palpable tension and effective suspense—the terror of knowing something is lurking, something hidden in the shadows of the night, and realizing there is little you can do about it. There is no gore here; it is not a violent movie. Instead, the horror plays out as a psychological thriller with supernatural undertones. It also reveals just how fragile and vulnerable the human mind can be; if we let our inner demons win, true chaos can be unleashed—a chaos that Amelia embodies to perfection.

This brings us to Essie Davis’s outstanding performance. Her ability to embody both good and evil simultaneously is incredible. There are deeply unsettling scenes where she plays a mother overwhelmed by her traumas, and others where—under the creature's influence—she personifies pure evil. Special mention must also go to the young actor, Noah Wiseman; the role he plays is complex. Child actors in horror movies often have to push their limits, and the two of them make a truly terrifying duo. Ultimately, this film is a great horror classic; I’m surprised I hadn’t seen it sooner, but it is genuinely excellent. It delivers a very natural kind of horror—free of excessive spectacle or special effects—and feels authentic at its core. Highly recommended; it is a film well worth watching. It runs for nearly an hour and a half. Here is the trailer—give it a watch and see if it tempts you to check out the movie.
