Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
**Hello friends, good vibes to all.
For some time I have been reluctant to watch Netflix content because it simply did not call my attention, many of the things I've seen in terms of series had fallen a little short, so I decided to wait for something that really made me curious and that for various reasons I knew it was going to be something of quality, that day came with The Sandman, series that I have to admit is the best that Netflix has released in recent months. The Sandman, this character from the DC Comics universe, a universe that if you ask me I like much more than Marvel, is not well known by people so it was very easy to spoil it but surprisingly they did not and the final product ended up being very good.
When I ask myself the question of the title is because if we remember there are very few series that have really made a difference in this universe, I could name a few: Gotham, Watchmen, Peacemaker, The Flash and even the same Doom Patrol that was recently canceled but until there, I think there is no more. I personally find this situation regrettable because I repeat, I grew up with the characters of this universe and therefore it is one that I like the most, I feel that the stories behind them are more striking and that there are only at most 5 good series is terrible. But well, to that small list we should add The Sandman, a series that has EVERYTHING, from the most childish fantasy to a very good horror. Let's talk then about the series that is setting the trend at the moment...
As we already mentioned, this story talks about the King of Sleep and Nightmares, Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) who is the all-powerful being of the world of dreams, he is the one who is in charge that in this world everything goes normally and that humans once they are sleeping do not represent any kind of threat, that is, he takes care of the dreams of humanity, a little simplistic way of saying it but that's how it is. Morpheus has a peculiar family since he is part of the Eternals and among the other members are Desire, Despair, Death, Delirium and Destruction, all with different realms and powers. The task of the Dream King in this series will be to repair all the damage that both the universe itself and humans have caused during a short period of his absence.
This absence is due to the fact that Morpheus was captured by a human at some point in the story and was held captive for several long years to the point of losing some of his most precious objects, some of which represented all his power. But since nothing lasts forever, at another point in the story he manages to be free and this is when the adventure begins, one that will lead him to search for his objects while he has to deal with a disrupted and sick humanity. We will also meet several characters from the story and we will go to fantastic and horrible worlds known to all, but this time it will be practically a matter of life or death.
It is difficult to start talking about a series that has so many things to comment but I will try to make it as short as possible. The first thing is everything that has to do with the visualizations and special effects, I think it's incredible what they did here, visually it's one of the best I've seen in a long time, the recreations of the different worlds according to the God to whom it belonged was something very top. Here you will see hell, the world of Morpheus and the world of one of his brothers, Desire. The places were recreated with the purpose of capturing who is who and the truth is that as soon as you see them you realize the personality of each character. They are details that I personally appreciated a lot and give an extra richness to the series; for example Deseo's world is a red room that invites you to succumb, when you see how he is you will realize why his "room" is like that.
As I said there is a mixture of several genres, all very well intertwined it must be said. We have a drama that encompasses both humans and these gods, a drama that touches on aspects of family, personal relationships and existential crises and how no one is exempt from that. On the other hand there is suspense and terror, let's not forget that this is a pretty dark series with characters that invite it to be so, Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie) and all his court of demons and one of the nightmares created by Morpheus himself, Corinth (Boyd Holbrook) will be in charge of giving that sinister and terrifying touch to this plot. Is there gore in this series? - Yes there is, very measured and well used, but it does exist, which is another plus.
Fantasy and fiction are also at play here. This is because of the representation of creatures that can only be in worlds of this nature and that in turn give the series a more familiar and relaxed atmosphere, there is a very thin line between the dark and everything else that never crosses but complements each other in an incredible way. It's a story that will never get boring because it will always surprise you with something, it's impressive how every scene can be a surprise, this is an aspect that I really enjoyed. All the trips that take place between the different worlds, the magic that is in the environment, the darkness and evil that is also in the environment and the discovery of the world of dreams is what makes this series so well done and draws so much attention.
And the last aspect is its characters. In itself the cast is very top, both for the actors and for the characters they embody. We have Johanna Constantine (Jenna Coleman) who is NOT John Constantine, they are different characters but they have the same essence, arrogant, with a black humor and that deep down are concerned about the people they choose to be by their side. I really liked Jenna's work, I don't know if she will be the best Constantine as Neil Gaiman said but without a doubt she is one that left a mark in the series, I would have liked to see a little more of her but it wasn't like that.
Lucifer was played by Gwendoline Christie, as you may know she was Brienne of Tarth in Game Of Thrones and also had an appearance in Star Wars Force Awakens. Here if I was surprised, I never imagined seeing her as the devil himself and despite the complaints it was not a character that bothered me much, at the end of the day Lucifer can be represented with any figure. To be a being full of evil I think it is not necessary to have a terrible aspect nor much less to behave like a monster, evil has many faces and that of Gwendoline personally puzzles me a little. And last but not least, the main character, Tom Sturridge. Morpheus is a dark character to a fault, ruthless but fair at the same time and that's what we see here, we see how a god can learn from humans and their own mistakes. There is a very marked and important emotional charge and depth in him and in the series that is much appreciated, it tells us that it is not the typical empty series full of beautiful effects, everything has a meaning and a why.
The reality is that this series looks to be one of the best of the year for all the elements behind it, it is a very faithful adaptation to what the comic book is and that is appreciated. Drama, adventure, fantasy, suspense, horror, and when I said it had it all, that's because it really does. Some well personified characters, a costume that is not often talked about but was also very high level, all the locations and visual effects were quite well done, I do not know, I can not get something negative to say, I would have to put me with a magnifying glass and be very meticulous to find something but so far it is not so.
9/10 because I didn't expect the quality that Netflix brought us this time. I think that when they want to do something good and worthwhile they really put effort into their work. There are 10 chapters of approximately 50-55 minutes that really have no waste. I highly recommend it because it is a series that even if you don't know the comic or the character you will enjoy it a lot, it is made for all the public, connoisseur or not, to fall in love with it. I leave the trailer for you to take a look.
