Hola amigos, buenas vibras para todos.
**Hello friends, good vibes to all.
Another day in which we are around these parts doing a review of a film practically out of the oven and that the specialized critics are putting the clouds with high scores. This movie was supposed to be released some time ago but due to the pandemic it had been delayed every time there was the intention of releasing it, fortunately things have changed and finally we could see this sequel to that classic that goes back more than thirty years ago. In general, sequels are never good, or at least it is very difficult for them to surpass the original, but we must say that this one did it, and in what a way.
As soon as the reviews began to be known, which one should not be carried away by them but they do work as a thermometer, I decided that I had to see it and in a movie theater because that is where you will enjoy the film to the fullest. Why do I say this? - Because Top Gun is a roller coaster of action and aerial scenes that drive anyone crazy and it is very necessary to live that experience in a movie theater. Lately I had been mostly used to see superhero movies in the cinema so I had forgotten what it was like to see something very different from that and I am really thankful and happy that it was with TOP GUN. But well, without further ado let's talk about what this sequel is about....
Being a sequel we logically go back a little over thirty years from the last time Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Ton Cruise) was on duty for the Navy. He is a fighter pilot who has been decorated multiple times in addition to being one of the best of all time. Maverick has something in particular and it is his reputation in the air, one that despite the passage of time is difficult to forget because he was responsible for great feats that anyone would not dare to think of. The thing is that an unforeseen event arises and this makes him to be required in the academy which was his home some time ago, the same one that trained him as a fighter pilot: TOP GUN.
The main idea is that Pete is the instructor of a new generation of pilots between men and women but it is known that teaching may be something that Maverick is not good at so it will be a challenge for him this new facet in his life in the Navy. A life that for some reasons is still anchored a bit to the past where everything revolves around "Goose", a former friend of Pete's, and for a change he will meet Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw who is Goose's son. Everything conspires to make it harder and harder to let things go. In the meantime, we will see how Maverick adapts to the new ways and technologies while, as he can, he teaches this group of youngsters about the real dangers and life of a fighter pilot.
There is something that this movie has and that is that it NEVER lowers the intensity, it never has that point where you say "I'm bored, I want to leave" and you start watching the clock, that doesn't exist here. Sure, not everything is action or flights but in the quieter moments of the plot you will always be aware of everything because the story is like that, it traps you to a point where you sincerely do not get tired. And from the very beginning we are given a preamble of what will be the film where you will see and feel the adrenaline in industrial quantities. So much so that there are scenes where you really think that if you blink you might miss something, that's how intense it is.
It is the typical story that we always see in the army where there is the group with their different personalities, there is the one that everyone likes, the joker, the quiet one, the one who seems to be no good but it turns out that he impresses everyone when he sets his mind to it and of course the one who boasts that he is the best of all and lets everyone know it. It is a plot that teaches us that teamwork and above all trust is something that is vital in this world of aviation.
TOP GUN is tied to nostalgia. Does this mean that it is necessary to have seen the original? - I would say no because the context is given to you as the movie progresses but it wouldn't hurt to see it. Besides, it's a bit forced to have a movie that came out 36 years ago, no matter how classic it is considered. I did see it at the time and I can say that this sequel leaves it a little behind and that's what I said before, with everything and how complicated it is to surpass an original I think this one does it, despite the nostalgia. In this one we see a reason for everything to happen, there is a reason to be, an engine that moves everything and that makes the plot much more credible and real.
Speaking a little about the scenes, I can't say enough about what I saw yesterday at the movies. It had been a long time since I was so enraptured watching a sequence as with some of those seen in this film. The level of tension with which they are lived, the way they were made, the effects, the little things like the gestures in the pilots product of the G-force, all that makes you feel as if you were really inside the cockpit piloting an F-14. There is nothing negative to say, nothing. Everything was very careful and worthy to see in a sequel as important as this one.
Tom Cruise is an actor who sells, whatever he does he sells well, but he does it with really good movies. I have always been impressed by his ability to play roles that require a certain physical condition, although it is true that this is not so much the case, it is also clear that it is necessary to have a minimum. Whatever the role he plays, he always looks solvent and that is a characteristic that very few actors in the industry have. We are clear that we are not talking about memorable performances but it is a character that is an icon and as such you have to know how to carry it well, but take it inside a plane and that's where the magic of it all is. Great film by Tom Cruise, many times it seems that the years do not pass over him.
We also see for example "Iceman" (Val Kilmer) in a totally different and very superficial role but that in the end influences a little in the plot of the film. Actors like Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, end up making up a cast that for me was quite good and complete, a little bit of everything the truth.
I understand that this installment of TOP GUN is proving to be the biggest box office hit of Tom Cruise's career and that's no mean feat considering the great track record he has on his shoulders. But it shouldn't come as a surprise, this is a film filled with the most thrilling and pure action, with its nostalgic touches well marked, with a love story? - I'm sure that more than one of you either already liked it or will like it as much as I do. I think this is one of the best sequels that at least I haven't seen for a long time.
I give it a 9/10 because it is nothing but a very epic and brutal movie. In my life I have never liked airplanes as much as I do now. It has a duration of a little more than two hours and you can see it in movie theaters. Really, do not miss the opportunity to see it, I assure you that you will not regret it. Here is the trailer.
