There's a phenomenon I find incredibly interesting: I don't usually focus on professional critics when deciding to watch a movie. I don't like reading many reviews, much less visiting review sites like Rotten Tomatoes. But sometimes the ratings just pop up, and that's what happened with this film. The critics who "know" about film give it a 93%, but people like you and me barely give it 49%. So, who's right? I ask because the difference is considerable. When this trend occurs, it's usually because the film in question is terrible, and I wanted to find out. What do expert critics see that the general public doesn't? I'll try to answer that in today's review.
Hay un fenómeno que me parece super interesante y es que yo no suelo enfocarme en la critica especializada cuando decido ver una película, no me gusta leer muchas reseñas ni mucho menos visitar páginas (Rotten Tomatoes) de este estilo pero hay veces en las que simplemente las calificaciones saltan y se dejan ver y con este film sucede lo interesante del principio. La critica hecha por la gente que "sabe" de cine le da a esta película un 93% pero las personas como tu y yo apenas un 49%, entonces, quien tiene la razón? - lo pegunto porque la diferencia es considerable. Cuando esta tendencia pasa es porque el film en cuestión es malísimo y yo quise comprobarlo, que ven los críticos expertos que el público en general no? - trataré de responder eso en esta reseña del día de hoy.
Existentialism, as a concept, can be quite dense for some people; some don't grasp or understand it as they should, and that's when things break down. This film deals with something like that, something that seems simple and minimalist but is anything but. Four friends, recent college graduates, decide to get together and spend some time before embarking on adult life. In the van they're in, they talk about everything, like what they hope for in their lives and what they plan to do with it, all amidst jokes and the typical teasing of young people. After a while, driving along a two-lane road completely surrounded by forests and trees, they realize that the turn they were supposed to take never appeared, and the road seems endless; nothing changes. This causes the first questions to begin to surface.
El existencialismo, como concepto, puede ser algo muy denso para las personas, algunas no lo asumen o entienden como deberían y es ahí cuando llegan los quiebres. Pues de algo así va esta película, una que pareciera ser la cosa más simple y minimalista pero que de eso no tiene nada. Cuatro amigos recién graduados de la universidad deciden verse y pasar un rato juntos antes de embarcarse en la vida adulta. En la camioneta donde están hablan de todo un poco como por ejemplo sobre las cosas que esperan para su vida y lo que planean hacer con ella, todo esto entre juegos y las típicas burlas de jóvenes. Al cabo de cierto tiempo rodando por una carretera de dos canales rodeada completamente de bosques y arboles se dan cuenta que el desvío que debían de tomar nunca apareció y la vía se hace infinita, nada cambia. Esto hace que los primeros cuestionamientos comiencen a aparecer.
It's clearly a strange situation because it seems their only option is to keep driving until they find an exit or something different along the way. This sounds simple, but it isn't. Getting out of the truck for too long isn't a solution either, because strange things start happening in the woods out of nowhere, making it unsafe to be outside the vehicle. Ultimately, what we have here is a kind of existential terror. This means the real threat isn't so much a creature or beings, but the uncertainty, the not knowing what's happening and how to deal with it, the fact of being in a place from which there's no escape, a brutal claustrophobia that ends up disturbing these four people. But is it really that bad? Well, imagine you're out for a drive and suddenly the environment becomes linear, impossible to understand. This has something similar, in theory of course, to Backrooms and the liminal space, that feeling of a loop that blows your mind.
Claramente es una situación extraña porque parece que la única salida que tienen es seguir manejando hasta conseguir una salida o algo diferente en el camino. Esto suena sencillo pero no lo es, tampoco bajarse de la camioneta por mucho tiempo es solución porque de la nada empiezan a pasar cosas extrañas en el bosque lo que hace que no sea seguro estar fuera del vehículo. Al final del día lo que tenemos acá es una especie de terror existencial. Esto quiere decir que la amenaza real no es tanto una criatura o unos seres, es la incertidumbre, es el no saber que está pasando y como afrontarlos, es el hecho de estar es un sitio del que no se puede escapar, es una claustrofobia brutal que termina perturbando a estas cuatro personas. Pero, es tan grave así? - pues imaginen que van de paseo y de repente el entorno se vuelve lineal, imposible de entender. Esto tiene algo parecido, en la teoría claro está, con Backrooms y el espacio liminal, ese que parece un bucle y que te vuela la cabeza.
And it makes sense because the director, Alexander Ullom, belongs to that new generation of young directors looking to do different things in film. I think this movie is aimed at Generation Z because everything we experience here, or at least that's how I understood it, is based on symbolism, hence its attempt to be deeper than it actually is. The road is life itself, and seeing how these young people behave shows how unprepared they are to face it. It's the fear of not having a fixed direction and not having the necessary tools to cope with everything that adult life throws their way. And yes, many will see how they gradually lose their minds, how they give in to the impossibility of making sense of what they're experiencing.
Y tiene sentido porque el director, Alexander Ullom, es de esa camada de nuevos directores jóvenes que buscan hacer cosas diferentes en el cine. Creo que esta película va dirigida a una generación, la Z, porque todo lo que vivimos acá, o por lo menos así lo entendí, se basa en simbolismos, de ahí a que busque ser más profunda de lo que realmente es. La carretera es la vida misma y al ver como se comportan estos jóvenes demuestra lo poco preparados que están para afrontarla, es el miedo a no tener un rumbo fijo y tampoco a tener la herramientas necesarias para hacer frente a todo lo que se les viene en la vida adulta. Y es que si, muchos verán como van perdiendo la cordura, se van rindiendo ante la imposibilidad de darle una lógica o un sentido a lo que están experimentando.
It must be said that the film does cause a slight sense of unease in the viewer and also generates discomfort because everything is repetitive, testing one's mental toughness and fortitude. The characters' fates depend on their personalities; the film makes that very clear. The acting is average, not extraordinary, but decent. Some performances stand out more than others, but the overall result is good. I would say that watching this film is an exercise because I feel it's not for everyone. There's no action, no jump scares, no tangible fear; the horror is purely psychological and mental, and it will depend on how you see and understand life. I wasn't bored, but there were monotonous moments, even though it's a film that doesn't even reach an hour and a half. It's definitely different; as I said, it has elements of Backrooms and even FROM. I always recommend films, and this one is interesting, to say the least. It's not for me, but that doesn't mean it's bad. I'll leave the trailer below so you can see what it's about.
Hay que decir que la película si causa una ligera angustia en el espectador y también genera incomodidad porque todo es repetitivo poniendo a prueba la dureza y entereza mental. El destino de los personajes dependerá de sus personalidades, eso lo deja bien claro el film. Sus actuaciones son normales, no extraordinarias pero si decentes, unos destacan más que otros pero el resultado es bueno. Diría que ver este film es un ejercicio porque siento que no es para todo el mundo, no hay acción ni jumpscares, ni un miedo tangible; el horror es netamente psicológico y mental, dependerá de la manera en como veas y entiendas la vida. No me aburrí pero si hubo momentos monótonos a pesar de que es una película que no llega a la hora y media. Sin dudas es diferente, como ya dije tiene cosas de Backrooms y hasta de FROM. Siempre voy a recomendar las películas, esta es interesante por decir lo menos, no es definitivamente un enfoque para mi pero eso no quiere decir que sea mala.
