After watching so many thrillers, dramas, documentaries, crime films, etc. I felt the need to look for something lighter, preferably a comedy film, to give my mind a break from so many intense subjects.

It was a difficult search, there is a lot of material in the streaming platforms of the comedy genre, but I saw the posters, read the synopsis and none of them could convince me to dedicate a couple of hours of my time to it.

Luckily, there was a title that caught my attention, it looked like a horror movie, and when I read the synopsis, it was a comedy mixed with horror. I love horror, and at the same time it fulfilled the requirement I was looking for, that it be a comedy.

What is the plot of Freaky?

Millie Kessler is a beautiful but shy teenager who goes to Blissfield Valley High School, has two great friends, a girl named Nyla and a gay guy named Josh Detmer. They are typical high school teenagers who do not belong to the popular group. Millie is secretly in love with Booker, but has very low self-esteem because her father died and her mother is an alcoholic. She is the mascot of the soccer team and the last night of the game, her mother forgets to pick her up, so she is attacked by the Butcher of Blissfield, a serial killer who a day before killed four teenagers and stole a knife with powers called La Dola. In the attack, both cut themselves with La Dola, which will cause the bodies to be swapped. Now, Millie is in the killer's body and the Blissfield Butcher wakes up in Millie's body. The girl will only have 24 hours to reverse the spell, otherwise the change will be permanent.

Freaky is one of those absurd comedies about the change of bodies, of which many versions have been made in Hollywood, but they are very funny, since the story of the change of bodies is something super fantastic, and many people like it.

There are many scenes that will make us laugh and enjoy. Millie is a teenager, and now in her body there is a man in his forties, a serial killer, who will take advantage of the beautiful young woman's feminine attributes to quench his thirst for blood.

There is a lot of blood, the film shows us some pretty crazy and bloody deaths, to satisfy both lovers of terror and humor, because the way he executes the murders is delirious.

The shy student, mocked by many of her classmates, now has a rather sexy look, and will kill several of the students and teachers.

On the other side of the story, we will have Millie, waking up in the body of the serial killer, offering us scenes to die from laughter, while we observe the reactions and behavior of a forty-year-old man acting like a high school teenager.

With gentle gestures, screaming and acting like a child, while feeling more powerful inside the killer's body, she will have to resort to the help of her two inseparable friends, who she will have to convince that she is Millie in the body of that man. This will produce funny situations between the characters.

She will only have 24 hours to stop the killer, steal the Dola that is in the hands of the police and be able to hurt him with the weapon so that each one can return to his original body. In the middle of all this, there will be time for Millie to declare her love for Brooker and for the killer to leave a pile of bodies.

One of the keys to making this absurd comedy work is the couple of protagonists, who have a lot of fun in the story.

The great Vince Vaughn, an actor who has done many comedies throughout his career, some of them very successful, but who also has talent for dramatic and somber characters, is an actor who performs well in any genre. In Freaky he plays the dangerous Butcher of Blissfield, a serial killer who has killed with impunity for years and has never been caught. He is a sadistic, crazy and sickly killer. But he will make us laugh until our stomachs ache, when in his body is the girl Millie and all her gestures, movements and reactions are those of a teenager. A complete madness from beginning to end, because the actor is quite tall and very masculine. The young actress Kathryn Newton plays Millie, the young girl who suffers from self-esteem problems and whose father has died. Her mother drinks all the time and her older sister is a policeman and spends her time at work to forget about the problems at home. She will have a remarkable change of character, going from being the weak girl to being a lethal killer, in addition to changing her dress, totally demure, to dressing a little sexy, drawing attention in high school. It is a pleasure to see her as a killer, killing teachers and students, in the worst possible ways. There's a sexy touch to that, which I love.

The actress has worked in several films, including Paranormal Activity 4 and the movie Pokémon, as well as TV series such as Halt and Catch Fire, Supernatural, Gary Unmarried, Mad Men and The Society. She does a good performance in Freaky and I think she's quite cute, plus she had a great role in HBO's award-winning Big Little Lies. The next movie she'll appear in is called "The Map of Perfect Little Things," which will be released in 2021.

Another couple of actors, who offer several comic scenes and have a fabulous interaction with the main characters, are the actors Celeste O'Connor and Misha Osherovich, who play Nyla and Josh, Millie's best friends and who will help her recover La Dola and capture the killer before the change of bodies becomes irreversible. Both are little known actors, but surely the good work done in this comedy will make them get job offers.

The film is directed by filmmaker Christopher Landon, with experience in the horror genre. Landon is the scriptwriter of the film Disturbia, in addition to writing the scripts for Paranormal Activity 2, 3 and 4. The filmmaker has had good reception with the films Happy Death Day, which was a success at the box office during its first week in the United States, then he would make a sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, which was not as well received as the first and got more negative reviews. In Freaky he repeats in a genre that he knows how to do very well, the slasher, and brings a fun dose of teenage comedy.
