If you are familiar with the work of filmmaker John Carney, you know exactly what to expect; you can be certain that he will deliver a beautiful story accompanied by fantastic music. (For now, I’ve skipped Flora and Son; I’m saving that for later.) Of the two films of his that I had yet to see, I chose Power Ballad.
Carney has mastered the blend of drama and musical comedy—a formula he shows no sign of abandoning, and for good reason: it has worked for him time and again. Personally, I love it; every story he presents is a delight. Regardless of the problems or setbacks his characters face, their passion for music—and for love—always shines through. His films convey an optimistic message. While I am a fan of tragedies and sad endings, I also thoroughly enjoy these movies, which serve as a hopeful reminder that there are still good people in the world.
I recommend not just this particular film, but his entire body of work. Even if his stories don’t hook you right away, the music in his films surely will. The director was once the bassist for the band The Frames; music was his first love, and that passion remains a constant, vibrant presence in all his productions.
The plot centers on two characters. Rick is an American who, in his youth, was part of a rock band; during one of his travels, he fell in love and ended up staying in Dublin. He was a musician who dreamed of becoming a major star, but fate led him down a different path—as happens to so many people, right? He is now married, has a teenage daughter, and works as a singer in a wedding band—the kind made up of men in their forties who perform covers of hit songs at celebrations and parties. The other character is Danny, a former member of a highly successful boy band who is now trying to make it as a solo artist, making the rounds on television shows, reality series, and similar programs. He is very famous and adored by teenage girls, yet he feels lost; he just can’t seem to compose anything that would allow him to return to the international music scene.
Bam! A chance encounter brings them together, setting the stage for the story’s central conflict. They are two souls who seem to connect perfectly, instantly captivated by one another. But in the world of the arts—where intellectual creation is at stake—you can’t trust anyone. That is precisely why I stopped writing stories and publishing them on my blog: I may be a mediocre writer, but anyone could copy my work, improve upon it, and take all the credit. It’s something that has happened to many people.
Some characters do questionable things—the kind of actions typical of a bad person—yet the filmmaker manages to reveal their more human and amusing side. That’s what I like about him: he knows how to deliver an entertaining experience, blending drama and comedy—and, of course, good music. You’re always left with a sense of satisfaction after watching his films.
Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas stand out, especially the former. Without meaning to disparage Nick Jonas, the truth is that he is essentially playing a version of himself here. Given that he is best known for being part of the Jonas Brothers, the role must have been quite straightforward for him. (Incidentally, I quite enjoyed his performance in Kingdom, the series about mixed martial arts.) The rest of the cast handles their roles well, but the spotlight clearly rests on these two actors.
I hope you enjoy the film; you’re in for a good time. Don’t forget to let me know what you thought of it in the comments.
