The trailer already showed why this season would be one of the most watched in the entire series, with the appearance of two important characters, the Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher and Princess Diana. Just as it happened in real life, where Diana gave a boost to the British monarchy. The Diana of fiction, has raised the standards of an already excellent series.
The fourth season of The Crown was the most anticipated by all the fans of the series. And those who did not watch it, rushed to watch the three previous seasons, which are absolutely excellent, in order to enjoy this new batch of episodes that would cover the eighties.

The season begins in 1979, with the arrival of Margaret Tatcher at 10 Downing Street, as the first female Prime Minister of Great Britain, a position she would hold for eleven years. These were difficult times economically for the British people, with high unemployment and inflation, as well as going to war with Argentina, for the control of the Falkland Islands.
The hearings with Queen Elizabeth II and the relationship between both women in power, are one of the highlights of the season. Because although the royal house has denied any rumor about a bad relationship between the two, it is hard not to think that two such different women had major disagreements.
On this subject, I prefer to believe the rumors and the unofficial news, because the police of the real house, in real life, is to deny everything, not to give an opinion, not to do anything. Hermeticism is the official policy of the monarchy. They are people who live in a bubble, with customs and ceremonies of past times.
The other important plot of this season, is the marriage of the Prince of Wales with Diana Spencer. The fairy tale, which was very present in the media and is still remembered by the people who lived at that time.

She was the perfect woman to marry the prince, her beauty and personality captivated people all over the world. This is perfectly captured in several episodes, which bothered several family members, the rumors of those years said that they bothered the queen herself, although in the series it is Prince Charles who appears more angry.
Prince Charles in the series is a very insecure man, perhaps because of his mother Elizabeth II's lack of affection. A man with a lack of love, and that's why he falls in love with Camilla, who gives him that motherly love he never had. Seeing everything that has happened in the real life of these two people, I think that the prince of the series, is a pretty faithful representation of the real future King.

As in previous seasons, Peter Morgan, creator of the series, tells important real events, but with a dose of fiction, something that has always criticized him, for some historical inaccuracies, but which serve to give an adequate narrative to the television series. On the Internet there are many articles that explain various things that happened and others that were not totally true.
After the premiere of the fourth season, several media published news that reported the rejection of the royal house, as several of the facts have been shown. Although the Royal House has never officially pronounced itself on the matter, and they are forbidden to make any kind of statement about the series, the rumors published in the press, that the members of the royal family are upset as they have been represented, especially in this new season, come from friends and sources close to them.
Apparently, Prince Charles is upset by some scenes, in which he verbally attacks Diana, something he denies having done, according to his close friends. But there are other people, like a former butler of Princess Diana , who defend what is shown in the series, assuring that it represents very well the personal hell that Diana suffered.
There is controversy, and there will be more, when in future seasons, the series' version of Diana's tragic death. Everyone should investigate, read and document what the series shows, to compare it and draw their own conclusions.

The entire cast of the third season repeats her characters, led by Oscar-winning Olivia Colman, as Queen Elizabeth at a mature age. Helena Boham Carter as Princess Margaret, who will be given an episode, which I thought was the least interesting of all. Tobias Menzies as Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, an actress that I liked her performance and that unfortunately the series decided not to show the kidnapping attempt she suffered in the late seventies. And Josh O'Connor is again Prince Charles.
The final scene of this season, repeats the end of the second season, with a family photo. A good way to seal a change of actors for the following seasons. But in this case, I noticed that the final shot is a close-up of Diana's face, minutes before she received some harsh words from Philip. Something that would please the followers of the conspiracy theories surrounding her death.

The actress Emma Corrin has left me enchanted with her interpretation of the young princess Diana. This performance will definitely mark a before and after in her career as an actress. It is one of the best performances of Diana of Wales that I have seen on the screen. She transmits beauty, shyness and a really captivating look. She is the great revelation of the series. The actress had played small roles in some series, such as Pennyworth and Grantchester, but it is The Crown that changed her life completely.

To play the Iron Lady, the selected actress was Gillian Anderson. The eternal Dana Scully of the X-Files and current love partner of the creator of the series Peter Morgan, had the difficult task of giving life to this historical character. Her work is good, and she manages to make this Tatcher credible, convinced that she is doing the right thing for the good of the country. I am satisfied with his performance, although it never reaches the level of the one performed by Meryl Streep in the 2011 film.
Emma Corrin and Gillian Anderson were the new additions to the season and with them we also say goodbye to the rest of the cast. Because there is a change of actors that will give life to the older characters, with the two remaining seasons.

How many more seasons to go?
At the beginning of the year, Morgan had declared that the fifth season would be the end point of the series, but months later, he declared that they were returning to the initial plan of doing six seasons, the last two that would cover the entire decade of the nineties and the beginning of the year 2000.
For the period of time they plan to show, I have the feeling that the final stretch of the fifth season will see the divorce of Carlos and Diana, which was in 1996, and leave the tragic death of the people's princess for the first episodes of the sixth and final season.
The fifth season will probably be seen in 2022. There is still a lot of time left, but the production is already underway and some actors have already been hired to play the characters of this new stage.

Which actors have been hired for the next seasons?

Imelda Staunton, a British actress known for playing Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter saga and who was nominated for an Oscar for the film Vera Drake, which won her the BAFTA award and the Venice Film Festival for best actress, will take over from Olivia Colman and Claire Foy. Imelda will play Queen Elizabeth II.

Lesley Manville, English actress of theater, cinema and television, with an extensive career and who has been nominated for the BAFTA awards as a supporting actress, will play Princess Margaret Major. I have seen little of this actress, and I look forward to seeing her work. The other actresses, Vanessa Kirby and Boham Carter have been phenomenal and I hope Manville will match or exceed them.

The extraordinary actor Jonathan Pryce, known as the Supreme Sparrow in Game of Thrones, will play Philip. This is a first-rate signing for the series, a first-rate actor to play the man who has always been a shadow. I am sure his work will be as excellent as that of Matt Smith and Tobias Menzies.

Dominic West, will bring Prince Charles to life in the last two seasons. I like this news. I want to see him perform as the Prince of Wales. West is a great actor and I thank him for being part of the best series ever: The Wire. His character Jimmy McNulty is an icon for me. Good choice.

And who will play Princess Diana? The beautiful actress Elizabeth Debicki will be the one to give life to Diana in the following seasons. An actress I love, I have written about her previously in several reviews of movies she has worked in. The actress, who fascinates me, has been climbing the ladder of the industry and just as this character changed Emma Corrin's life, I am sure she will push Debicki even further. I am excited about this choice of actress.

The Crown is consolidating with this fourth season, as one of the best series of the moment. An impeccable production, excellent performances and the exciting and intriguing history of the British monarchy, under the reign of Elizabeth II, who is now 94 years old, becoming the longest living queen in history.
A perfect season.
