After years of delay, The New Mutants was finally released. Directed by Josh Boone and starring Massie Williams and Anya Taylor-Joy.

What is the plot? Danielle Moonstar wakes up in a facility where she is supposed to be helped. Her father and all the people on her Indian reservation died after a strange storm. The place is run by Dr. Reyes and there are four other young mutants who are also being tested and studied by the corporation that runs the place and who have hidden plans for the new mutants. The five young people will get to know each other and will have to learn to control their powers in order to face the dangers that appear in that facility, they will have to face their worst fears.

The New Mutants is a movie that was delayed for more than two years. It was supposed to be released in April 2018, but a series of problems caused the release date to be postponed.
First, rumors circulated that the executives were not happy with the final cut, so new scenes had to be planned. I believe the director made a statement denying the rumor, but everything points to the fact that it was true.
Later, the acquisition of 20th Century Fox by Disney took place, changing all the plans and postponing again the release of the film, which had generated intrigue since its first teaser trailer. For a long period of time, the film was practically forgotten and there was no new news.
At the beginning of this year, the promotion machinery announced a new release date, but it seems that the project was already cursed. The Covid pandemic appeared, forcing again the postponement of the film's release.
When the first delays occurred and due to the amount of time that had passed, my intuition told me that perhaps things would not go as well as they seemed. This is something that usually happens in most productions that have to be re-recorded because the heads of the studios are not satisfied. We have the Fantastic Four as an example.
At the time of the announcement of this film, by revealing part of the cast and the dark tone of the story, I had great expectations. Adding a touch of terror to the superhero story, it caught my attention and for a while I had it on my list of expected films.
Therefore, I deeply regret that the result is irregular. It is not as bad as some have said, but it is not as good either. There are things that didn't work out in this story of the X-Men universe.
Jordant Mintzer, film critic for the Hollywood Report, suggests that the only people who will find anything new in this film will be the viewers who never saw Buffy. This made me laugh, because when I saw the film, especially the battle scenes against the different creatures, it reminded me so much of the Buffy series.
You can call me crazy, but I'm one of those who firmly believe that the Disney executives ordered the re-editing. The first preview, more than two years ago, showed the dark vision that the director wanted to convey, but surely Disney wanted him to soften some things later.
The important thing is that finally The New Mutants is released, being for the time being the last film of the X-Men franchise. The film, despite not meeting all my expectations, seems to have worked among teenage audiences, and it focuses specifically on that goal. Adaptation of a series of three comics with the same title, which was aimed at these new teenage mutant characters.
I'm not a comic book expert, but if you search the Internet, you'll surely find information about the comics on which the film is based. I'm totally confused with so many spin offs, parallel universes and new superhero franchises.

Josh Boone is not a director that catches my eye, his name was more well known, due to the success of his film The Rift in Our Stars in 2014. That experience in romantic dramas is evident in the romantic subplot of The New Mutants, with the emerging love between Rahne Sinclair and Danielle Moonstar.
The cast had a good selection, when they made the movie they were younger, but two of the actresses were already known.
Maisie Williams, was already known worldwide for the series Game of Thrones. She plays Rahne Sinclair, whose power is to become a wolf. Her performance was one of the strongest in the entire film. And the actress Anya Taylor -Joy, of whom I wrote a review a few weeks ago of a mini-series that she stars in, plays Illyana Raputina with great power. She is a kind of sorceress, with an arm that turns into a sword and can be transported to a world called Limbo. Her character is initially unpleasant with the new mutant, even pedantic. The actress surely brought out her Argentinean side to play this role.
The actress Blu Hunt plays Dani Moonstar, the mutant who has the power to make people's worst fears come true and who will cause all the terror that his companions will experience inside that hospital/prison where they are. I didn't know this actress, she has participated in some television series, and is working on another film yet to be released. I thought her performance was good, but nothing out of this world.
Charlie Heaton , well known to fans of the series Strangers Things, something that serves as a hook for teenage audiences, plays Samuel Guthrie ( Cannonball). Actor Henry Zaga , who became known for the MTV series Teen Wolf, plays Roberto Da Costa, a mutant with the power to be a man of fire.

As an opening film for this new group of mutants, it is acceptable, but I have serious doubts that they will continue with this franchise. Most likely they will announce some kind of remake in a while. It all depends on the amount of money they raise and the acceptance of the teenage audience. Also, Massie and Anya should have a full schedule, but if they offer a good amount of money, they will repeat in their characters.
It's not what many expected, but it's entertaining.

My Ranking: 2.9/5
