Hello everyone, I hope you're doing great. On this occasion, I want to share a new review with you. I'm going to talk a bit about an awesome series I saw a while ago, and which I absolutely loved, called: The Gifted. I know what you're thinking: "Ugh, another superhero series!"... it's a show that Fox released some time ago from the X-Men universe. At the time, I was ready to skip it; my expectations were rock bottom, seriously. But, people... how wrong I was! This series is a gem, I'm telling you. So, what's it about? Picture this: you're living a super normal, suburban life, one of those kinda boring ones, you know?
You've got your job, a partner who loves you, two teenage kids with all the high school drama... that's the life of the Strucker family. The dad, Reed Strucker, is a prosecutor whose job is, LITERALLY, to put dangerous mutants in jail... the irony... chef's kiss. And then suddenly, boom!, everything goes to hell at a school dance. His kids, Lauren and Andy, are being bothered by some bullies and in the middle of the mess, BAM!, their powers activate. They're mutants. Imagine the look on the guy's face. The man who spent his life enforcing anti-mutant laws suddenly realizes his own children are the very people he used to prosecute. Obviously, the government, with a super evil agency called Sentinel Services, now wants to hunt them down. Their only way out is to escape and seek help from the "Mutant Underground," which is like a secret network of fugitives. From the very first episode, everything feels super personal and the danger is real, it's extremely high. They're not trying to save the world here; they're trying to save their family! And that, people... that's what hooked me in a second.
Hola a todos, espero que estén super bien, en esta ocasión, les quiero compartir una nueva reseña, les hablaré un poco de una serie genial, que ví hace un tiempo, y qué sin duda me encanto, de trata de: The Gifted.. ya sé lo que están pensando: "¡Ugh, otra serie de superhéroes!".. es una serie que Fox sacó hace un tiempo del universo de los X-Men, en ese tiempo yo estaba listo para no verla, mis expectativas estaban por el subsuelo, de verdad. Pero, gente... ¡qué equivocado que estaba! Esta serie es una joya, se los digo en serio.. entonces, ¿de qué va? Imagínense esto: llevas una vida súper normal, de suburbio, de esas medio aburridonas, ¿saben?
Tienes tu trabajito, tu pareja que te quiere, dos hijos adolescentes con todo el drama de la prepa.. esa es la vida de la familia Strucker, el papá, Reed Strucker, es fiscal y su trabajo es, LITERALMENTE, meter mutantes peligrosos a la cárcel.. la ironía… chef's kiss. Y de repente, ¡pum!, todo se va al carajo en un baile de la escuela.. a sus hijos, Lauren y Andy, los están molestando unos bullies y en medio del lío, ¡BAM!, se les activan los poderes, son mutantes, imagínense la cara del tipo. El hombre que se pasó la vida aplicando la ley anti-mutantes, de un día para otro se da cuenta de que sus propios hijos son justo la gente que él perseguía.. obvio, el gobierno, con una agencia súper maldita llamada los Servicios Centinela, ahora los quiere cazar. Su única salida es escapar y buscar ayuda del "Subterráneo Mutante", que es como una red secreta de fugitivos.. desde el primer capítulo, todo se siente súper personal y el peligro es real, es altísimo. Aquí no están tratando de salvar el mundo; ¡están tratando de salvar a su familia! Y eso, gente… eso fue lo que me atrapó al segundo.
Okay, now, for all my fellow X-Men fans who must be wondering, "where the hell does this fit into the timeline that's a total mess?". Well, look, the series does something super smart: it's set in an era where the X-Men and the Brotherhood have simply disappeared, vanished. It has a vibe very similar to the movie Logan, you know? A world without its most famous heroes, where being a mutant is more dangerous than ever. That's a masterstroke because it allows the series to feel part of the universe we love, but without being tied to it, without having to keep up with everything. It's packed to the brim with nods and characters pulled from the vault of memories, but telling its own story. We see characters who barely appeared in the movies take the lead here. We have Lorna Dane, aka Polaris; Clarice Fong, who is Blink; and John Proudstar, Thunderbird, all leading this clandestine network. They're not the Avengers, they're not the most famous, and that's precisely why it's so good. We see them struggle, become leaders, and build a new family from the ashes of the old one.
And, hey, can we take a minute to talk about the characters? Because this is where the series truly shines. Their development is brutal. Reed Strucker's evolution is one of the most impactful arcs; the guy goes from being a cog in the system that oppresses mutants to a desperate father willing to break every rule for his kids. It's a super powerful change, and you believe it. Stephen Moyer plays him with a force that makes you really feel the world crashing down on him. Then there are the teenagers, who deal with their new powers in a way that feels incredibly real. The series milks the classic X-Men metaphor for all it's worth: powers as a reflection of how terrifying, confusing, and strange adolescence is, and they nail it, they do it so, so well. You realize that having powers isn't just "so cool," it's a burden that isolates you and endangers the people you love.
But, in all honesty, the character who steals every damn scene is Polaris... my god, Polaris! Emma Dumont portrays her with a wild energy... I mean, she's Magneto's daughter, you can tell from a mile away. And by the way, Wanda's sister in the comics. Well, Polaris is powerful, she's pissed off, she's vengeful, and she carries the full weight of her father's legacy (even if she doesn't fully know it at first). She has this pent-up rage against a world that hates her, and you completely understand it. This makes her one of the most unpredictable and magnetic (yes, pun intended) characters on TV. Her journey throughout the season is insane; she's my favorite character in the whole series.
Ok, ahora, para todos mis compas fans de los X-Men que se deben estar preguntando "¿y esto dónde carajos entra en la línea de tiempo que es un desmadre?". Pues miren, la serie hace algo súper inteligente: se ubica en una época donde los X-Men y la Hermandad simplemente desaparecieron, se esfumaron.. tiene una vibra muy parecida a la de la película Logan, ¿saben? Un mundo sin sus héroes más conocidos, donde ser mutante es más peligroso que nunca, esa es una jugada maestra, porque permite que la serie se sienta parte del universo que nos encanta, pero sin estar atada a él, sin tener que seguirle el paso a todo. Está llena hasta el tope de guiños y personajes que sacaron del baúl de los recuerdos, pero contando su propia historia.. vemos cómo personajes que en las películas apenas y salían, aquí toman el protagónico, tenemos a Lorna Dane, o sea, Polaris; a Clarice Fong, que es Blink; y a John Proudstar, Thunderbird, todos ellos liderando esta red clandestina. No son los Vengadores, no son los más famosos, y justo por eso es tan bueno.. los vemos batallar, ser líderes y armar una nueva familia de las cenizas de la anterior.
Y, a ver, ¿podemos tomarnos un minuto para hablar de los personajes? Porque aquí es donde la serie de verdad se luce, el desarrollo que tienen es brutal.. la evolución de Reed Strucker es de los arcos más impactantes, el tipo pasa de ser un engranaje del sistema que oprime a los mutantes a un papá desesperado que está dispuesto a romper todas las reglas por sus hijos. Es un cambio súper potente y te lo crees, Stephen Moyer lo actúa con una fuerza que de verdad sientes cómo se le viene el mundo encima. Luego están los adolescentes, que lidian con sus nuevos poderes de una forma que se siente súper real, la serie le saca todo el jugo a la clásica metáfora de los X-Men: los poderes como un reflejo de lo aterradora, confusa y extraña que es la adolescencia, y lo clavan, lo hacen muy, muy bien.. te das cuenta de que tener poderes no es solo "qué cool", es una carga que te aísla y pone en peligro a la gente que quieres.
Pero, con toda sinceridad, el personaje que se roba cada maldita escena es Polaris.. dios mío, ¡Polaris! Emma Dumont la interpreta con una energía salvaje… es que es la hija de Magneto, se le nota a kilómetros.. y por cierto, hermana de Wanda en los cómics, bueno, Polaris es poderosa, está encabronada, es vengativa y carga con todo el peso del legado de su papá (aunque al principio ni lo sepa bien).. tiene esa furia guardada contra un mundo que la odia, y la entiendes perfecto. Esto la convierte en uno de los personajes más impredecibles y magnéticos (y sí, fue a propósito el chiste) de la tele.. su viaje durante la temporada es una locura, es de mi personaje favorito de toda la serie.
I have to tell you, the series doesn't hide its political and social underpinnings, which have always been the heart of the X-Men. The persecution of mutants is a direct and unapologetic parallel to real-world problems like racism and police brutality. You see people being profiled, hunted, and imprisoned just for being born different. The series isn't just fantasy; it's social commentary, and it feels incredibly relevant and necessary in these times. It gives the story a weight and depth that elevate it far beyond a simple action show. And the action, when it comes, is fantastic. One of the things that bothers me most about shows like this is when they overuse special effects to the point where it becomes a meaningless light show. The Gifted is much smarter than that. It uses its effects to serve the story; the powers have consequences and take a toll on the user.
Blink, for example, struggles to control her teleportation portals. They're unstable, they exhaust her, and sometimes, not everything that goes in comes out in one piece. It makes her powers feel real and dangerous. When the mutants finally unleash, the effects are clean, creative, and quite well done. And the villains! We don't have giant purple robots. Instead, we have a new generation of Sentinels: small, terrifying, spider-like drones that can attack in swarms, adapt, and are nearly indestructible. They are a genuinely creepy and visually interesting threat. For the most loyal fans, the series is also a treasure trove of Easter eggs. The introduction of the Stepford Cuckoos, called the Frost sisters here, was another moment that made the comic book fan in me rejoice. It's filled with these little rewards for long-time readers that enrich the experience without alienating new viewers. So if you're an X-Men fan, you'll feel right at home, because it truly conveys that mutant feeling.
Debo decirles que la serie no oculta sus trasfondos políticos y sociales, que siempre han sido el corazón de los X-Men.. la persecución de los mutantes es un paralelismo directo y sin complejos con problemas del mundo real como el racismo y la brutalidad policial, ves a gente siendo perfilada, cazada y encarcelada solo por nacer diferente. La serie no es solo fantasía; es una crítica social, y se siente increíblemente relevante y necesaria en estos tiempos.. le da a la historia un peso y una profundidad que la elevan mucho más allá de una simple serie de acción, y la acción, cuando llega, es fantástica. Una de las cosas que más me molestan de series como esta es cuando abusan de los efectos especiales hasta el punto de que se convierte en un espectáculo de luces sin sentido, The Gifted es mucho más inteligente que eso.. usa sus efectos para servir a la historia, los poderes tienen consecuencias y pasan factura al usuario.
Blink, por ejemplo, lucha por controlar sus portales de teletransportación.. son inestables, la agotan y, a veces, no todo lo que entra sale de una pieza, hace que sus poderes se sientan reales y peligrosos.. cuando los mutantes finalmente se desatan, los efectos son limpios, creativos y están bastante bien hechos. ¡Y los villanos! No tenemos robots morados gigantes.. en su lugar, tenemos una nueva generación de Centinelas: drones pequeños, aterradores, con forma de araña, que pueden atacar en enjambre, adaptarse y son casi indestructibles, son una amenaza genuinamente espeluznante y visualmente interesante. Para los fans más fieles, la serie es también un tesoro de Easter eggs.. La introducción de las Stepford Cuckoos, aquí llamadas las hermanas Frost, fue otro momento que hizo que el fan de los cómics que hay en mí se alegrará, está llena de estas pequeñas recompensas para los lectores de toda la vida que enriquecen la experiencia sin alienar a los nuevos espectadores.. así que si son fanáticos de los X-men se sentirán como en casa, porque realmente transmite esa sensación mutante.
Look, if I have to find a "but," something bad about it, it would be that the first episode hits the ground running, you know? It's like they throw you right into the action, and I would have loved to spend a little more time with the Strucker family, to get to know them before their whole world exploded. But hey, people, that's a super small detail in a series that does almost everything else incredibly well. It just understands the most important thing about the X-Men: that it's not about the powers, it's about the people. It talks about prejudice, self-acceptance, and the idea of the family you choose—how these characters, all a bit broken, come together and create something much stronger. Seriously, this series is proof that you can be faithful to the comic while also creating something new with its own identity.
It works as a tremendous comic book story, as a sci-fi drama, and most importantly, as a story driven by its characters. It takes the themes we already know from the X-Men and makes them feel fresh, urgent, and brutally powerful. I went in expecting nothing and came out a huge fan. The second season is also very good; it introduces some incredible allegiance shifts, new enemies, more allies, everything explodes in a great way, and the ending... it's super emotional. It's a shame it all ended there. But hey, for me, The Gifted is a solid 8.5/10. It's not perfect, of course, but it has more heart and brains than many other series out there, So I'll tell you straight up: if you passed on this series, or if you're an X-Men fan who's tired of disappointments, give The Gifted a chance. A ver, si le tengo que buscar un "pero", algo malo, sería que el primer capítulo arranca con todo, ¿saben? Como que te avientan de golpe a la acción y me hubiera encantado pasar un ratito más con la familia Strucker, para conocerlos antes de que todo su mundo explotara.. pero bueno, gente, eso es un detalle súper pequeño en una serie que hace casi todo lo demás de una forma increíble.. es que entiende lo más importante de los X-Men: que la cosa no va de los poderes, va de las personas, te habla del prejuicio, de aceptarse y de esa idea de la familia que uno elige, de cómo estos personajes, todos medio rotos, se juntan y crean algo mucho más fuerte, en serio, esta serie es la prueba de que se puede ser fiel al cómic y al mismo tiempo crear algo nuevo, con identidad propia.
Funciona como una tremenda historia de cómics, como un dramón de ciencia ficción y, lo más importante, como una historia que se mueve por sus personajes.. agarra los temas que ya conocemos de los X-Men y hace que se sientan frescos, urgentes y con una fuerza brutal, yo le entré sin esperar nada y salí hecho un súper fan.. la segunda temporada también es muy buena, nos presentan unos cambios de bandos increíbles, nuevos enemigos, más aliados, todo explota de una manera genial, y el final.. es súper emotivo, una lastima que ahí acabará todo.. pero bueno, para mí, The Gifted es un sólido 8.5/10. No es perfecta, claro, pero tiene más corazón y cabeza que muchas otras series por ahí, así que se los digo así de claro: si dejaron pasar esta serie, o si son fans de los X-Men que ya están cansados de decepciones, denle una oportunidad a The Gifted.. y bueno, hasta aquí la reseña de hoy!
