There are two important points to highlight before I dive into this post. First, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a horror movie as good as this one. Second, my life has been quite chaotic lately—I’m only just getting around to watching this two months after its release! Insidious is my favorite horror franchise; I usually make it a point to watch each new installment on its opening day, but—well—the moment has finally arrived. Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much, given that the third and fourth films were a bit underwhelming (though I did love the fifth one). But I was wrong! This sixth installment has everything it takes to hook new fans, while also tapping into the nostalgia of those of us who have been following the series for nearly 20 years—ever since Dalton gave us all such a fright back in his childhood! 🤣
Although the story does not focus on the Lambert family—as was the case in the two iconic first installments of this saga—the ever-present Elise, played by Lin Shaye, helps us reconnect with the original concept of the series. Insidious has the unique quality of depicting the afterlife exactly as I have always imagined it: a mysterious realm where souls move about, existing right alongside us but on a different plane. The films always possess a certain darkness that makes their scenes all the more chilling—a quality I love about the franchise. While I initially feared it might feel repetitive, that wasn't the case; there were many unexpected moments. And although some of these elements might not be plausible in reality, they were highly compelling within the context of the fiction, adding depth to the plot—such as the special abilities possessed by these new protagonists.
I would recommend watching the first five films—primarily so you can grasp the references and the atmosphere of Insidious—though you could certainly watch this one on its own and still enjoy an excellent film in the genre, even without much prior knowledge. There is an epic jump scare that nearly gave me a heart attack—much like in the first film, which features one of the greatest jump scares in cinema history—and later on, as the movie intensifies, they pull off another one that will definitely get your heart racing. Characters from the earlier installments reappear; while they don’t play a major role, it’s nice to see the connection and maintain the core premise of this film series: that souls from the beyond yearn to return to our earthly plane...
With Insidious 6, something happened that hadn't occurred in the first five installments: I felt genuinely uncomfortable due to scenes so gross that they forced me to close my eyes. As I mentioned before, I love these films because they deal with the spiritual realm and demons—my favorite subgenre of horror—but there was one moment here that, had it continued, could have been classified as gore, albeit on a small scale. The scene takes place at the dentist's office; it begins in our earthly realm and ends in the afterlife, and I don't think I'm the same person after watching it. I really appreciated the element of surprise, as I don't recall seeing anything like that in the previous chapters. If you've already seen the movie, let me know what you thought of that moment in the comments section below! 🤭 I'd love to hear your take...
I’m giving this 2026 horror film the highest possible score—and not just because it’s my favorite horror franchise; it truly deserves it. Insidious 6 features a completely refreshed plot, while still holding onto the elements that made the series compelling from the start. It introduces new characters without losing sight of the franchise’s past, and it was genuinely a pleasure to watch an installment crafted with such dedication, 17 years into the series. My passion has been reignited, and I’m certain I’ll watch it again—perhaps as part of a full-series marathon, now that my Halloween tradition is approaching. A single night is no longer enough; I now dedicate the entire final week of October to my rituals—watching horror movies, whether alone, with my wife, or with friends. And then, on November 1st, Mariah Carey automatically takes over my life! 🤣 I’m not even joking...
