The man from Toronto: when I hear it, the first thing I think of is false identity.

Teddy Jackson, is not a criminal, he's not an assassin, and he certainly doesn't look like someone who could intimidate anybody. But because of a mix-up with an Airbnb rental, he gets mistaken for a mysterious and extremely dangerous assassin known as the Man from Toronto.

At first, I thought the whole thing was going to be a simple case of mistaken identity, but then Teddy actually starts getting involved with criminals who believe he is this legendary killer. The funniest part is that Teddy has to keep pretending that he knows exactly what he's doing while having absolutely no idea what is happening. Somehow, his awkwardness and his ability to talk his way out of things make everyone believe he's even more dangerous than they thought.

The movie is obviously built around the contrast between Teddy and the real Man from Toronto. Teddy is loud, nervous, talkative, and constantly trying to survive whatever situation he's found himself in. The real Man from Toronto, played by Woody Harrelson, is almost the complete opposite. He's quiet, calm, intimidating, and has that kind of presence where he doesn't need to say much before everyone in the room becomes uncomfortable.
La película está claramente construida alrededor del contraste entre Teddy y el verdadero Hombre de Toronto. Teddy es ruidoso, nervioso, hablador y está constantemente intentando sobrevivir a cualquier situación en la que se haya metido. Kevin Hart is very much Kevin Hart here, and I don't mean that as a bad thing. His usual energetic personality fits Teddy perfectly. I actually found myself laughing more when he was simply reacting to what was happening around him than during some of the movie's more obvious jokes. Watching this ordinary guy try to convince professional criminals that he's a terrifying assassin is where the movie works best for me.
Kevin Hart es muy Kevin Hart aquí, y no lo digo como algo malo. Su personalidad habitual, llena de energía, encaja perfectamente con Teddy. De hecho, me encontré riéndome más cuando simplemente reaccionaba a lo que estaba pasando a su alrededor que durante algunos de los chistes más obvios de la película. What I also enjoyed was how the movie kept mixing the action with the comedy. There are fights, shootings, explosions, assassins and all the usual things you'd expect from an action movie, but Teddy's presence makes almost every dangerous situation ridiculous. You can have people fighting for their lives while Teddy is somewhere in the middle trying to understand why everyone is suddenly trying to kill him.
También disfruté de cómo la película mezcla constantemente la acción con la comedia. Hay peleas, tiroteos, explosiones, asesinos y todas esas cosas que normalmente esperarías de una película de acción, pero la presencia de Teddy hace que casi todas las situaciones peligrosas resulten ridículas. Puedes tener a varias personas luchando por sus vidas mientras Teddy está en medio intentando entender por qué, de repente, todo el mundo quiere matarlo.
Of course, the story isn't something we've never seen before. The mistaken-identity idea has been used countless times. But I didn't really mind that. Sometimes I don't need a movie to surprise me every five minutes. If the characters are entertaining and the story keeps moving, I'm already having a good time.

I think the character that surprised me the most was Teddy himself. At the beginning, he comes across as someone who is constantly making bad decisions and getting himself into trouble. But as the story continues, you start seeing that he's not completely useless. He actually has qualities that help him survive situations where a normal person probably wouldn't last very long. His biggest weapon isn't a gun or some special fighting ability. It's basically his mouth.
Creo que el personaje que más me sorprendió fue el propio Teddy. Al principio, parece alguien que está constantemente tomando malas decisiones y metiéndose en problemas. Pero a medida que avanza la historia, empiezas a darte cuenta de que tampoco es completamente inútil. De hecho, tiene ciertas cualidades que le ayudan a sobrevivir situaciones en las que una persona normal probablemente no duraría demasiado. Su mayor arma no es una pistola ni alguna habilidad especial para pelear. Básicamente, es su boca.
And then there is the real Man from Toronto. Woody Harrelson gives the character this strange calmness that makes him interesting. He doesn't have to run around shouting or showing off to make you believe he's dangerous. He can simply walk into a room and the whole atmosphere changes. I liked that difference between him and Teddy because it made their interactions more entertaining.
Y luego está el verdadero Hombre de Toronto. Woody Harrelson le da al personaje una extraña calma que lo hace interesante. No necesita correr de un lado a otro, gritar ni presumir para hacerte creer que es peligroso. Puede simplemente entrar en una habitación y cambiar por completo el ambiente. Me gustó esa diferencia entre él y Teddy porque hacía que sus interacciones fueran más entretenidas.
I won't pretend this is the kind of movie that completely changed my view of action comedies. It doesn't reinvent the genre, and some parts are definitely predictable. But I don't think every movie needs to do that. Sometimes you just want to sit down, watch Kevin Hart accidentally become a feared assassin, laugh at the ridiculous situations he gets himself into, and forget about everything else for a while.
No voy a fingir que esta es una película que cambió por completo mi forma de ver las comedias de acción. No reinventa el género y algunas partes son definitivamente predecibles. Pero tampoco creo que todas las películas tengan que hacer eso. A veces simplemente quieres sentarte, ver cómo Kevin Hart se convierte accidentalmente en un asesino temido, reírte de las situaciones absurdas en las que termina metiéndose y olvidarte de todo lo demás durante un rato.
