Many times I have told you that I love all the work that HBO has been doing around their series, because all are super entertaining and well done, with different, profound and many times even funny script; however a few weeks ago I began to see the series Catherine the Great and as much as I wanted me to like it I didn't get it, the series has too many nuances and compressed complications that make us lose the trail at times.

Catherine The Great is a series that takes us through part of the life and process of conquest that implied the famous regent of Russia when she took power and decided to impose her political philosophies to put Russia under her feet and at the top of the world. The series begins in a great way in its first two chapters showing us how it was that process of re-adaptation that Catherine had to carry out little by little to put the appropriate pieces to ensure its continuity in the power of Russia. Complications, betrayals, gossip and endless traps laid the first stone for this woman to consecrate herself as the great conqueror and regent that she was, a woman who did not bow her head before anything or anyone, an excessively confident and intelligent woman who always knew how and when to act so as not to arouse bad suspicions or warn her enemies. Through the first chapters we see how Catherine played a kind of chess with people, manipulating their loyalties and convictions to adapt to theirs, but we will also see how she fell in love and gave herself to a man who helped her achieve her desired greatness.

Although at the moment everything I have described to you seems to point out that this series is something fantastic, it certainly is not, the series is not perfect at all and has a very notable problem; its development. The series is very short and that makes it too compressed and fast, what I mean is that the creators of this series skipped a lot of important and outstanding situations in the life of a very interesting woman, something that would have given more strength to the plot and especially more time for their characters to develop and get entrenched in the plot. Many times the series lengthen unnecessarily but sometimes the opposite happens, being developed in a mini series format takes away too much substance from its plot making memorable moments and entertaining situations fleetingly pass without transmitting any impact.

In general the plot of this series is very good because it tells us how was the foundation and development of a great empire, however has too many temporary leaps, in a chapter we find Catherine planning the conquest of a territory and the next minute the plot advances to the moment where that territory was already conquered, something that takes a lot of realism away from a plot that required care and delicacy to achieve highlight because after all we are telling a story about the history. No doubt the series disappointed me because I expected much more, more intensity and more detail when showing us part of the life of a great woman, I feel that they totally missed the cast so good they had reducing the screen time of some characters and especially the total duration of the series. This series represents one of those moments where I say that something that isn't bad doesn't necessarily have to be good, the series is above average but without a doubt it could and should have been better considering everything that HBO has been doing lately.
