Get away from the demons.

Today's review will be somewhat difficult, not only because of the content of the movie, but also because of the depressed main character.
You Were Never Really Here is a small niche masterpiece of a depressed man.
The movie shows two timelines.
The main one where the protagonist (no real name) is a seeker for missing children. He gets a contract and must find a girl who has ended up in a brothel for high society.
Our main character has to find her, finds out where she is being held and the action begins.

The movie is different than typical action movies, here we do not experience action movies like Taken, everything happens slower here and the movie focuses more on the demons of the protagonist.
The second timeline is flashbacks showing the past when he was a soldier and even when he was a child.
Each moment in the hero's life causes one demon.

He lives with these demons every day, they want to kill themselves by suffocation or jumping into a train.
However, everything changes when he is commissioned to find Nina.
A young girl who is the last resort from suicide.

The film balances between an action cinema and the drama of the main character.
We get to know him devoid of feelings, with the will to live, and finally see him as a man who wants to escape from herds.

The film is a small masterpiece, because few films show a man with deep depression as well as this film.
The plot of the kidnapping is very important here because the mission is to free her and save her.

Some will like this film, others will say that it is too boring, but this is the point to feel this stuffy claustrophobic atmosphere that even holds the viewer by the throat like the main character with a bag over his face.
The film proves to be a tribute to the film Oldboy (Korean) where the main character used a hammer to attack his opponents.
(Trailer) Here we have the same, and many sequences are simply taken and well realized, you can feel the atmosphere of Asian cinema here.Of course, the film also has some slight plot holes, but they are less important if we focus on the main character, who, like a hypnotist, hypnotizes us with his hopelessness to life.
Joaquin Phoenix plays the film, and it is here that he showed his filmmaking skills in his free glory.
Many scenes were later used in the Joker (including the famous dance) This is where Phoenix already showed the madness that he vented into the Joker.
The film is a very well-made script and it was directed by Lynne Ramsay, who created a work that is an interesting mixture of action cinema with the hopelessness of life.
This is one of those movies where seeing such a tough hero you wish him to end it. It's a movie worth watching, not only for the great role of the main character, but also for the problem he describes here and the demons he shows. Great cinema. I heartily recommend 9/10
