  1. You Were Never Really Here Review@kapitanrosomak1834d

    Get away from the demons.

Today's review will be somewhat difficult, not only because of the content of the movie, but also because of the depressed main character.

You Were Never Really Here is a small niche masterpiece of a depressed man.
    The movie shows two timelines.

The main one where the protagonist (no real name) is a seeker for missing children. He gets a contract and must find a girl who has ended up in a brothel for high society.
Our main character has to find her, finds out where she is being held and the action begins.

    45C4383A-43E4-40F8-AEC9-695EB091176A.jpeg

The movie is different than typical action movies, here we do not experience action movies like Taken, everything happens slower here and the movie focuses more on the demons of the protagonist.

The second timeline is flashbacks showing the past when he was a soldier and even when he was a child.
Each moment in the hero's life causes one demon.

He lives with these demons every day, they want to kill themselves by suffocation or jumping into a train.
However, everything changes when he is commissioned to find Nina. A young girl who is the last resort from suicide.

The film balances between an action cinema and the drama of the main character.
We get to know him devoid of feelings, with the will to live, and finally see him as a man who wants to escape from herds.

The film is a small masterpiece, because few films show a man with deep depression as well as this film.
The plot of the kidnapping is very important here because the mission is to free her and save her.

    CBECA758-7FFB-47B2-B44B-A1AA831603DD.jpeg

Some will like this film, others will say that it is too boring, but this is the point to feel this stuffy claustrophobic atmosphere that even holds the viewer by the throat like the main character with a bag over his face.

The film proves to be a tribute to the film Oldboy (Korean) where the main character used a hammer to attack his opponents.

(Trailer) Here we have the same, and many sequences are simply taken and well realized, you can feel the atmosphere of Asian cinema here.

Of course, the film also has some slight plot holes, but they are less important if we focus on the main character, who, like a hypnotist, hypnotizes us with his hopelessness to life.

Joaquin Phoenix plays the film, and it is here that he showed his filmmaking skills in his free glory.

Many scenes were later used in the Joker (including the famous dance) This is where Phoenix already showed the madness that he vented into the Joker.
The film is a very well-made script and it was directed by Lynne Ramsay, who created a work that is an interesting mixture of action cinema with the hopelessness of life.

This is one of those movies where seeing such a tough hero you wish him to end it. It's a movie worth watching, not only for the great role of the main character, but also for the problem he describes here and the demons he shows. Great cinema. I heartily recommend 9/10

  2. A Beautiful Day - You Were Never Really Here- Movie Review@claudio831922d

It is a spiral of violence, to live with the traumas of childhood and war. The film is very raw and does not tell much about the protagonist's life, only some flashbacks of a difficult childhood that indelibly marked him, aggravated by an experience in war that made him even more cold and cruel. But his ferocity is not unleashed on random targets but on those who kidnap children, in order to enslave or prostitute them.

The weapon with which the protagonist will choose to kill his enemies is a hammer, not a simple gun. The care with which the protagonist treats his weapon is a fact that reveals a lot about the psychological aspect of the film as well, with shots that are always close, almost obsessive towards the hunter. The photography and scenography perfectly follow this guideline with dark settings, few details, few emotions, aseptic. The scenes are shot very quickly, a succession of sudden and violent actions, which do not distract the viewer's attention, indeed somehow capture him even more.

    img_0.4267102904569136.jpg Font

Joe, a former veteran kills on commission. A senator contacts him to free Nina, his daughter kidnapped and forced into prostitution. The girl's violated childhood overlaps and merges with Joe's. Psychology is the same. One is double the other and vice versa. The common thread between the two is blood red.

Thanks to an ever superlative and unsolved Joachin Phoenix, Ramsay's dramatic thriller is the grim tale of an intimate, silent pain to be decrypted. The most violent scenes are silent, in black and white or accompanied by fifties jukebox music. The stillness is an anesthetic preview of a composed, raw, lucid violence, without hesitation. Time is suspended and maybe it's a beautiful day and no one has really been there.

The soundtrack is dark, sometimes violent, in line with the storyline and the themes dealt with in the film. On the other hand, the theme is delicate, unfortunately still current, and the anger of the protagonist is a bit the same feeling we feel in reality when we read about similar episodes. Child prostitution is shameful, unspeakable, cowardly, it shouldn't even exist as a concept, yet there are countries in the world famous for child sex tourism. The anger actually grows at the very thought of what many children and teenagers suffer from their tyrants.

I do not recommend the film for minors, violent and with very strong themes. For those who like the action genre it is certainly a pleasant film to watch but without too many pretensions.

    ITA

    Tunnel Wave.png

Sometimes the trailers deceive, other times they flood, other times they tell too much, other times too little.

The trailer for "You were never really here" is halfway through.

It doesn't say much but it says enough to make us understand that it will be a strange and violent film with an actor like Joaquin Phoenix ready to devour every scene.

It will be like that but something else will happen too, something that will leave a bitter taste in your mouth for a beautiful but unfinished, ugly but interesting film.

It is not clear if the work directed and scripted by the Scottish Ramsey is the result of an attempt to dare or victim of the carelessness of those who have failed to take care of the most important details.

Phoenix never disappoints. His powerful but undone body like sheets in the morning lying on an amorphous bed do justice to a complex and immature character who is completely devoted to the tasks to be carried out day after day, without license to kill but with license to be violent.

The plot suddenly shakes and everything becomes more vibrant again in a meaningless escalation that brings to mind "Drive" by Nicolas Winding Refn and with a whirlwind of simplistic and simplified violence as in a dull movie by Steven Seagal or Liam Neeson.

The ending would like to be cryptic and auteurish but ends up being a blank slate for a beautiful but ugly, exciting but boring film, well thought out but meaningless, with a vivid plot that has no flashes.

It could have been a film to remember.

It ends up being a forgettable film that will make us think in a few years time that maybe "We were never really here".

    Life isn't a train. It's a shit tornado full of gold..png

  4. You erre never really here: film strano, forse troppo@serialfiller2616d

A volte i trailer ingannano, altre volte ingolosiscono, altre volte raccontano troppo, altre volte troppo poco.

La visione del trailer di "You were never really here" si colloca a metà strada.

We were never really here".

  5. You Were Never Really Here (film): artsy, wierd, but good@gooddream2864d

Joaquin Phoenix has been one of my favorite actors since starring in Gladiator all those years ago. He doesn't do very many films and I was surprised to see him in this one. This movie was not a blockbuster and was never meant to be one. It did, however, catch the eye of many people at various festivals around the world and won a bunch of awards.

    A-One-Films_You-Were-Never-Really-Here_670x250_EE.jpg

Joe (Phoenix) is a retired military vet who takes jobs as a hired killer who seems to specialize in the rescuing of young girls who are involved in human trafficking (it isn't completely explained.) His methods are unusual and quite brutal and Joe himself is a very troubled individual, frequently suffering from lucid flashbacks of his youth as well as his time in the military. He doesn't seem to have a great deal of emotions, it doesn't even seem as though he takes on the rescuing of young girls because of any sort of moral high-ground, it is just something he does for money and is apparently very good at it because he is known as someone who will get things done.

    joaquim_1.jpg

I feel as though this movie gets overly good reviews from the press because it is artsy rather than being straight-forward. Phoenix does a good job (as expected) and overall the movie keeps moving at a reasonable pace to keep you interested. However, in my mind the movie's artsy methods rather than just telling the story, get in the way of the progression and at times you really need to pay extremely close attention just to know what is going on.

Overall it is definitely worth watching and I thought it was good. I just don't think it is as good as it is being touted on a bunch of different major review websites. I normally feel this way about films that win at Cannes though, so this is not at all surprising to me.

  7. 'You Were Never Really Here' by Lynne Ramsay Review: Incredible storytelling through visuals@namiks2996d

    You Were Never Really Here.jpg

Written and directed by Lynne Ramsay, You Were Never Really Here is a visual masterpiece that promotes visual storytelling over the traditional narrative structure through continuous dialogue and exposition.

Joe, a combat veteran, is plagued by continuous PTSD after the events he had formerly witnessed; having had the horrific world of sex trafficking placed before his eyes, Joe seeks out his next employment as a hired gun -- although he's more of a hired hammer -- in order to violently dish out justice and save the victims before it's too late.

The film is carried by Joaquin Phoenix, with an absolutely incredible performance, displaying a lonely life that has forever been tormented. Enough torment to have the good in him take over and carry out justice as best as possible. He's brutal, but he's carrying massive emotional weight from his childhood, and his actions make him a very interesting anti-hero/vigilante.

His character is told mostly by his body language; his little amount of words, but also his actions around his mother. There's occasional flashbacks to his past which take up little screen-time, but provide enough to really convey just who Joe is as a person, and what his intentions exactly are here. And it's clear that the money isn't what it's about. Joe is broken, distraught, but forever using the good in his heart to ensure that nobody will remain a victim.

Lynne Ramsay's writing and directing skills really show how alone Joe is, his remote personality and disinterest in general interaction. It excellently connects to the film's name, given Joe acts almost like a ghost.

With the film only one hour and thirty-minutes, everything is paced nicely. It displays the feeling that Joe is never wasting time. He's never allowing himself to take a large enough break for it to feel like the feel has paused, or simply slowed down enough to focus elsewhere. Everything in the film represents Joe as a character, and it's brilliant.
