The Book of Boba Fett is a new TV show which is released on Disney+ every Wednesday, following on from the final scene in The Mandalorian, where Boba Fett claims the crime lord throne from Bib Fortuna, who must have taken over from Jabba the Hutt after his death in the film Return of the Jedi.
Story By the look of it, The Book of Boba Fett will be following his story as he tries to maintain control of his new crime lord empire and seems to be set primarily around Mos Espa, on the planet Tatooine. Early in the episode, we see him accepting tribute from some local Vassals he and his bodyguard Fennec Shand seem suspicious of. As the episode continues they are attacked by some Ninjas and after a bit of a skirmish, Boba Fett is taken to his bacta-tank to heal as Fennec Shand goes in pursuit to capture the two attackers who made a run for it when they started to lose the fight.
One thing that felt weird about the fight was that the two Gamorrean Guards were following behind the two main characters, then in the next shot out of nowhere, they were gone. Once the fight started I thought the attackers must have killed the Gamorrean Guards but no, they just must have wandered off because while the fight is in full swing they both charge in to help the two main characters. Strange choice to me, I would have taken a second to show them getting distracted and walking away or something like that. I can see why they wanted to have the two guards charge in though, the tension rises while Boba Fett and Fennec Shand are losing the fight, then once the guards charge in, it evens the score and they start winning. Just a weird choice and more of a nitpick.
The Bacta-tank seems to be used as a narrative tool to show us flashbacks of Boba Fetts past, something that I like. It's good being able to see some of his backstories, him escaping the Sarlacc pit, having his armour taken from him and then being captured by Tusken raiders.
I was worried that this Tv show would follow The Mandalorian show in the sense that each episode tends to take place on a different planet, with new cast members joining Mando in each episode. Something I really like with the Mandalorian, I was just afraid in case each Star Wars show felt the need to cover the whole galaxy. But, by the look of it so far, The Book of Boba Fett is going to stay on Tattooine. Focusing more on the story of Boba Fett building his empire and maintaining control over it. Something that I'm happy about, I like the idea of having room in this new show to breathe and get to know one place, rather than constantly jumping around.
Costume Choices The costumes in the show overall are good, I didn't like Boba Fett's armour being freshly painted as I think the worn-out and scratched look is distinct and tells more of a story, as I've seen it more though the freshly painted armour has grown on me. One thing about his costume that hasn't grown on me though, is the black underclothes, I think the grey jumpsuit was a lot better with the armour, it's not a huge deal I'm just not really a fan of it.
The Gamorrean Guards look really weird and is something I wont be able to get used to either. They look like they're wearing BDSM gear and I think it's a weird choice, it's an issue I had when I saw them in The Mandalorian too. I know they want to make it their own and do things different, but when they wore all the furs and stuff I think it was a lot better.
The orginal outfit.
The new and not improved outfit. (From the Mandalorian) I wasn't able to find the new outfit from the Book of Boba Fett, it's like this without the belt and a thin leather strap binding over their chest.
Lastly, the Tusken raiders are wearing black robes instead of their original baige coloured ones, not a huge deal I just think it's a weird thing to change and I don't like it.
The episode ended a bit too abruptly for me and I think these Star Wars shows should really be hour long episodes rather than half an hour long. A thirty minute run-time with this and The Mandalorian feels like it's hard for them to really cover much ground and once the episode gets a bit slow I just end up thinking "Hurry up and do something. We're running out of time." One thing I love about this is being able to be back in Jabbas Palace and I really hope it turns into what it was before with all the scum of the galaxy hanging out and partying there. Star Wars deffinatly needs more of the sleazy underworld stuff and hopefully The Book of Boba Fett will cover that aspect of Star Wars.
I hope the fight scenes don't stay as they were in this episode, because to me it seemed more like Power Rangers rather than Star Wars. I think it was just how static the filming of the sequence was because of the attackers using the energy sheilds to trap them in a confined space. When they film like that, it can kind of make the aliens of Star Wars look a little bit goofy, so hopefully they can be a bit more dynamic in any future fights, or just stick to firefights and dogfights.
I'm looking forward to the next episode and can't wait for the show to really come into it's own, it's hard to judge a Tv show by it's first episode.
