I know I've said on more than one occasion that romantic comedies aren't my favorite genre, but I make the sacrifice of watching them to spend time with my mother.

But with this film, something unexpected happened: I actually enjoyed it. Maybe it was Elsa's charisma, the lead character, whose performance genuinely made me laugh.

The plot helps too — it's not your typical Hollywood romance. In fact, it features something rarely seen in commercial cinema: more than one elderly character, and even more unusual, they're not in a nursing home!

Because if you add up the ages of the two lead characters, you almost get two centuries! And that's without counting their friends and grown children.

So that's one of the things I liked about the film. The protagonists are elderly people with lives of their own and a genuine will to live them, at least in Elsa's case, very much against her son's wishes.

Fred, on the other hand, did seem like the typical old man who does nothing but watch TV or lie around on the couch, despite his daughter's pleas for him to exercise. Though, of course, that's exactly what you'd expect from someone who's just been widowed.

In short, the film has several very funny scenes and a few that will bring out a tear or two, but most importantly, it shows us that older adults are still people, with wants and needs, and capable of making decisions about their own lives.

Which would be good to remember more often, because if we're lucky, we'll grow old too.

Elsa & Fred (2014)

Sé que he dicho en algunas ocasiones que las comedias románticas no son mi género favorito, pero hago el sacrificio de verlas para compartir tiempo con mi madre.

Pero con esta película ocurrió algo inesperado: la disfruté. Tal vez fue el carisma de Elsa, la protagonista, que genuinamente produce risas gracias a su interpretación.

También ayuda la trama, no es el típico romance de Hollywood, de hecho es algo pocas veces visto en el cine comercial: más de un personaje anciano y lo más inusual, ¡no están en un geriátrico!

Porque si sumamos la edad de los dos protagonistas principales ¡casi obtenemos dos centurias! Y eso sin contar los amigos e hijos mayores.

Así que ese es uno de los aspectos de la película que me gustó. Los protagonistas son personas ancianas con vidas y con ganas de vivir sus vidas, al menos en el caso de Elsa, muy a pesar de los deseos de su hijo.

Por su parte, Fred si aparentaba ser el típico viejo que no hace más que ver la televisión o echarse en un sillón, a pesar de las súplicas de su hija para que se ejercite. Claro que es lo que podría esperarse de alguien que acaba de enviudar.

En resumen, la película tiene varias escenas muy cómicas y algunas que te sacarán alguna lágrima, pero lo más importante, es que nos muestra que los adultos mayores siguen siendo personas, con deseos y necesidades, y capaces de decidir sobre sus vidas.

Lo cual sería bueno recordar más a menudo, porque si somos afortunados, también llegaremos a ser viejos.
