I Feel Pretty (2018)

Review by @ladyaryastark 🏆#107 🎵44 🎬32 📺3 📚3 · 3h · of I Feel Pretty · 1 view

I already know that the typical body-swap comedy driven by a magic wish is very worn out... and this film is an alternative version of that plot.

But it has a twist I hadn't seen before, which gives this comedy an extra layer, because beyond the laughs, it leaves a lesson behind.

SPOILER

The protagonist is a woman labeled today by many movements as "positive body," because saying "fat" is politically incorrect, and she lives with the frustration of not being accepted for her body — a frustration that's very well founded.

The truth is that no matter what a person looks like, they carry the weight of paradigms and standards they're supposedly meant to meet in order to be socially accepted. And that's where the film takes a different turn.

SPOILER

Instead of sticking with the typical body swap in which the protagonist's life improves in direct proportion to their physical attractiveness, here there's no physical transformation at all — a blow to the head alters her perception of herself, not her actual body, which stays exactly the same throughout the film.

SPOILER

While the protagonist's entire sense of confidence is built on how she perceives her own body, the film shows us that a person's attractiveness often comes down more to attitude than to looks.

Although the film relies on the bewilderment of the protagonist's social circle and those old clichés and stereotypes about beauty accepted as the ideal — even when that ideal is far from normal — it generates plenty of genuinely funny moments.

Who would've thought comedies could also carry motivational messages — though, of course, for many, the social damage is already done.

I Feel Pretty (2018)
