American Assassin is an upcoming 2017 action thriller film based on Vince Flynn's 2010 novel of the same name. The film stars Dylan O'Brien, Michael Keaton, Sanaa Lathan, Shiva Negar, and Taylor Kitsch.
The film is directed by Michael Cuesta, a very versatile American director, has worked in very different cinematographic genres and his career has been brewing between film and television. He made his debut as a scriptwriter, director and producer with "L.I.E." (2001), an intense and tough teenage drama that was nominated for six Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The widely acclaimed film premiered in competition at the Sundance Film Festival. Cuesta was also nominated for the Gotham Awards and won the Best Director debut at the Stockholm Film Festival and the Edinburgh Film Festival. Following this work, he directed several chapters of HBO's award-winning TV series "Six Feet Under" (2001). With the film "12 and Holding" (2005), he touched on the subject of adolescence, the film was nominated for the Independent Spirit Awards. A year later, Cuesta returned to work in television directing several episodes for the popular series "Dexter" (2006). Also for television he directed the tv-movie of terror "Babylon Fields" (2007) and the pilot episode of the series of terror "The Oaks" (2008). After this period on television, he returned to the cinema to direct "Tell-Tale" (2009), a science fiction and horror thriller starring Josh Lucas, Lena Headey and Brian Cox. In parallel, he directed an episode of the popular vampire series "True Blood" (2009) and also directed the pilot episode of the series "Blue Bloods" (2010). His next film was "Roadie" (2011), a dramatic comedy about the world of rock and its aftermath. A year later, he returned to television to direct the pilot episode of the mystery series "Elementary" (2012), several chapters for the spy series "Homeland" (2011) and also the tv-movie drama "Second Sight" (2013). WHAT'S THE STORY? AMERICAN ASSASSIN follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien) a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.
