  1. American Assassin: How far would you be willing to go for revenge? [ENG/ESP]@cjlugo1105d

Portada American.jpg Source | logo | Image edited in Adobe Photoshop

There are movies that have the ability to connect with the audience from the first minute of shooting while there are others that don't, American Assassin is among that first group without a doubt, if you have seen it most likely you agree with me but if you haven't then read on, I am convinced that after doing so you will take some time to watch it.

Talking about revenge is not something I like very much honestly, but in this film most of the plot is developed based on that, the protagonist and the antagonist are immersed in this desire to take justice into their own hands, one fighting for the benefit of humanity and the other trying to cause greater damage than he has received, it is interesting but so we can approach the story that this film presents us.

Mitch's life could not be better, enjoying the beach with his girlfriend and proposing marriage in front of everyone present, the excitement of that moment is incomparable, when one proposes marriage and the loved one says "yes" is a truly unforgettable moment, so reflected Mitch at the beginning of the film, but who would have thought that in less than two minutes that nice scene would become something frightening.

The radical Muslims arrived and with them came misfortune, this terrorist group killed everyone on the beach except Mitch who was left badly wounded, perhaps they assumed he would die because of the two shots he had received. I must confess that I made a mistake watching it with my 8 year old daughter, we always watch movies together but in this one she quickly began to cry and her chest was heaving, at that moment I dedicated myself to take care of her and talk to her to solve the situation, now all that remains is to take her to the beach and show her that nothing is wrong.

After Mitch loses his fiancée his life changes completely, he leaves the university and begins to train martial arts and investigate the sect that committed such terrorist act, his idea is simple, kill them all because in his mind that kind of people do not deserve to live. For that he learns the teachings of Islam and begins to have contact with these people so that they recruit him and thus be able to infiltrate, what Mitch did not know is that "the CIA" was monitoring him secretly because the fact of being the only survivor did not cease to be something suspicious.

Eighteen months passed when he was called to meet with the sect, his revenge was about to be realized or so he thought but at the moment he met the murderer of his fiancée, the American army arrived and killed everyone in the mosque, Mitch was furious and unbridled since he was not the one who killed that person. Once freed from death he is recruited by the secret group Orion and trained to serve the United States in its fight against terrorism. This part of the story is very interesting because the good actor Michael Keaton (Hurley) enters the scene, his participation as leader of Orion and his experience in the battlefield make him see that Mitch would be a big problem for the team, but forced to accept it, he trains him hard and teaches him that he should not make it personal in the sense that he should be professional in his work and leave revenge aside.

This theme of making things personal is precisely what the antagonist does, a mercenary who responds to the alias of "Ghost" but is really an exile from Orion, he was believed to be dead but as they go into a mission they realize that he is still alive and wants to arm a nuclear bomb, however he does it to get revenge on Hurley who according to him abandoned him years ago where he was captured and tortured.

As you can see we have two extremes, one that to save many people must put aside his revenge and another that continues with his thirst for revenge until the end, the denouement is exciting, there is a lot of action and deaths along the way but everything obeys an order of events that make this movie something masterful from my point of view. In 2017 when it was released it did not have much acceptance, perhaps because of the violent and bloody, although I think it had a lot to do with the issue of terrorism since here they involve countries like Iraq and Iran linked to this and the development of nuclear weapons.

**Do people like this really exist?**

After watching it and meditating a little this question arises, but in turn takes me to times of the first and second world war where nuclear bombs killed many people, and that makes me conclude that if there are such people in the world, we also have the attack of the twin towers and many more things that have happened in the history of mankind to affirm that the mentality of man can do atrocious things without a doubt.

This film serves to reflect that we are in a fallen world and that at any moment happiness can turn black because of others, so as a man, head of household and father I must enjoy and cultivate what God has given me, my wife and children and guide them to live a life that is not only an enjoyment for them but also beneficial to others.

Finally and to conclude, this movie teaches us that revenge is evil, it corrupts the human mind and leads people to commit horrendous crimes, those who have indulged in it have done so and many of their crimes remain in history to this day.

    **Realmente existen personas asi?**

  2. American Assassin (2017)@showflix3195d

Worked well, but no characteristics that make it completely different from other cinematic agents.

Maybe the CIA should have let him do what he was doing. Mitch Rapp ( Dylan O'Brien ) is a vigilant , a street fighter who crushes international terrorists from one nest to another with arms and personal accommodation. But make no mistake, Mitch is so skilled that he can infiltrate the terrorist's nest that is the ultimate target. He is basically a wannabe Batman terrorist specialist. The CIA needs more people like this; they do not have to bother anymore direct hands down. On the other hand, Mitch is also too dear to be sacrificed, though he is more likely to endanger his life and missions because he can not control himself.

Mitch Rapp is a fictional character created by Vince Flynn as the main character for dozens of novel series. American Assassin is his first appearance on the big screen, and it seems to be the opening act for the character-based spy franchise, as well as Jack Ryan's Tom Clancy or Jack Child Lee Child's Lee Reacher. Mitch is a pretty tough and effective but aggressive agent and his mind is not too long. Sort of a careless version of Bourne. Apart from that, just like the movie itself, there are no other characteristics that make it completely different from other cinematic agents.

We first got to know Mitch 18 months earlier, as he was going to propose to his girlfriend at a luxury resort on the beach of Ibiza. However, suddenly the beach was raided by Muslim terrorists who immediately fired at the visitors blindly in a one-take sequence whose cruelty was beyond my expectations before watching. Mitch survived despite suffering severe gunshot wounds. However, among the dozens who died, one of the victims was his girlfriend.

Now Mitch has become a tough guy. How do you know? Know from his attitude that likes to provoke a commotion. In the MMA sasana, he beat up his sparring friends. In the shooting area, he carelessly fired at all targets (though everything was on target). At home, he rowdy punches his sansak to make his neighbors protest. Oh, and he also grows a dense beard, because tough people always have thick beards. His desire is to kill the terrorist who has slaughtered his girlfriend. To be more convincing when infiltrated into their nest later, Mitch has also been deeper in Islam.

He left for Libya with his own capital. Cool again, he managed to deal directly with the terrorists. That's how tough Mitch is. He was ready to kill Mansur the terrorist leader and everyone who was there, but the CIA was again doing something that specializes in them: interfering in the affairs of others. Dor! Come to think of it now, maybe this is the reason why Mitch is hot and always stubborn in carrying out his mission later.

It turned out that the CIA had long monitored Mitch's activities. He was taken to the CIA office. But instead of being arrested, the CIA intends to train Mitch into a real agent. "He is the best vigilante I've ever seen," said CIA Secretary Irene ( Sanaa Lathan ) who then brought Mitch to Batman's direct training, Michael Keaton as a war veteran Stan Hurley who has a special training facility in the woods. This part of the training facility injects a bit of originality for its relatively standard plot. The exercises given were pretty barbaric, where the students had to fight each other brutally while Hurley did a verbal provocation to fire a gun just to distract their focus. But this facility is actually also sophisticated. There are shooting exercises with virtual reality devices to simulate in the studio soundstage area.

The story can not be more cliché with a source of conflict involving nuclear triggers. We are even given the antagonist nicknamed "The Ghost" ( Taylor Kistch ) who is a former agent who is now an international criminal. He just stole the trigger from the Russian mafia, and now intends to sell it to the highest bidder. Stan feels Mitch is not ready for this mission yet, but Irene believes he has. No need to ask why.
What is needed by this kind of film is only the main character and the convincing action sequences. Dylan O'Brien is interesting to look at. He is no longer a puberty teenager you remember running around in The Maze Runner , but really looks tough as an action star despite still having a boy-style girl hair. He gives focus and anger enough for his character. Meanwhile, Keaton seems to know he is playing in what kind of movie. Scott Adkins and Shiva Negar appear short as supporting cast.

The action scene takes place in a typical action movie universe, where our characters shoot each other in the crowd but do not attract the attention of the police. If I remember correctly, there are only 4 policemen here, and none is crucial to the story. Maybe they do not want to interfere with the CIA. Even so, he worked well. Director Michael Cuesta mostly designed his aggressive action sequences in close-up spotlight, more often involving close-range combat. There's a big scene in the climax, more than just a car crash or a building collapse, made with lots of CGI and we're not expecting to get in a movie like this. This scene I will not reveal, which obviously makes me stunned.

I can imagine how this movie might offend many people, especially in today's times where everyone can be offended almost for anything. The election of its antagonists based on the American sociopolitical paradigm will provoke controversy especially in the Islamic state. There are also scenes that show violence against women, which is narratively plausible, but still makes my tongue a bit wry while watching it.

But we better not think about it, because the movie itself is also not really thinking about it. That element is just plot mechanics to serve us a action film that is more dependent on action than it involves the human aspect let alone the political contemplation. And the action is pretty fun to watch. Moreover, not many you will remember from this movie when you step out of the door of the cinema.

  3. American Assassin - Movie Review@coldsteem3200d

    assassin.jpg

When I noticed that the title American Assassin had a double dose of "ass" in its name, I hoped it wasn't a harbinger of things to come. I like Michael Keaton and I have been patiently waiting for this film to arrive. It is one of those films that you know could be decent or horrendously bad. I wasn't expecting anything Oscar worthy, just to set the bar at the right level.

    assassin2.jpg

Mitch Rapp (Dylan O'Brien) isn't a trained operator. He is a smart kid going to Brown University, ready to propose to his girlfriend. A terrorist attack changes all that. Rapp begins to train himself, intent on infiltrating the terrorist cell responsible for killing his girlfriend. He has a reckless streak, a vendetta, and a single focus. His ability to maneuver towards his goals draws the attention of the CIA, landing him in a special training program under the tutelage of Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). It is Hurley's responsibility to mold his young protege, in spite of his own reluctance to take Rapp on as an operator. Rapidly evolving events thrust the teacher and his hot-headed student into a real world scenario involving Iran, nukes and a rogue former American operative.

    assassin3.png

There are a few plot twists in this film, and they seem to dwell a bit too long at times on Rapp's inability to focus. But this is an action film. And an action film that delivers good action with a decent plot is hard to find these days. Surprisingly, American Assassin managed to be modestly good. I'm not going to rave about the writing, but the dialogue was decent, the pacing excellent and the plot better than expected. The narrative arc was pretty solid, with a dynamic (although a bit absurd) climax. If you like mindless fun with a bit of plot to temper to the action, then this film will suffice.

    assassin4.jpg

I'm not really a fan of Dylan O'Brien. He does this weird thing with his nose and lips that reminds me of the apes on the original Planet of the Apes franchise. It's weird. He was in The Maze Runner movies, which I watched at the theater and regretted afterward. Those films were a cheap knock-off of the dystopian teen genre. But he was pretty solid in this film. Almost believable as a tough guy. Michael Keaton was rock solid. Just when I thought his career was over, he quietly crept back into Hollywood and has been making plenty of films. Good ones. Not like the ones he took to pay the bills in the interim. He has been great in recent years. The rest of the cast was forgettable. Not necessarily great. Not necessarily bad. Just cannon fodder for the most part.

    assassin5.jpg

American Assassin received an R rating by the MPAA. The film is unapologetically violent. There are no sex scenes and only one brief scene with partial nudity. In fact, that scene didn't add anything to the movie and could just as easily have been left out. The violence was contextual. This was one of those films that is hard to watch at times. The gun and knife play was typical for this type of film. But there were also a couple of torture scenes that left little to the imagination. Anyone who is put off by graphic violence should skip this film.

    assassin6.png

I wasn't sure what to expect going in to American Assassin. I knew the film had as much chance to be a waste of money as it did to be moderately good. I wasn't expecting perfection. And I didn't get it. What I got was a matinee priced action film that had great action sequences, solid pacing, good performances, big special effects and the semblance of a good plot. This is one of those movies I don't mind spending matinee money on, but you won't be disappointed to wait for it streaming either. Good for a fun afternoon out. 7/10.

  4. American Assassin Trailer (2017) | 'Get it Done'@movietrailers3237d

AMERICAN ASSASSIN follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien), a CIA black ops recruit under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton). The pair is then enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets. Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.
