The Commuter Movie Review

Review by @laqsking · 3131d · of The Commuter

The Commuter is a Liam Neeson thriller set on a commuter train. Neeson's character must make some hard choices and try to solve a puzzle. Violence is the biggest issue: Expect intense fight scenes, with punching, kicking, stabbing with knives, and bloody wounds. A gun is brandished, but shots are only sporadically fired. A man's head is smashed by a bus, and there's a massive derailed-train sequence with smashing and flying debris. Language includes a use of "f--k" and infrequent use of other words ("s--t," "bulls--t," "a--hole"); there's also a middle-finger gesture. After being fired, a man drinks several beers in a bar. It's not exactly an airtight story, but it moves fast enough that viewers can sit back and enjoy the silly suspense and crazy action.

The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Spanish director and producer in the suspense thriller and the action genre. Established in Los Angeles (United States) since 1992, he started in the world of cinema working as an editor. In California music video clips and television commercials before being selected by producer Joel Silver to shoot House of Wax (2005), a horror film that was a huge box office success around the world. Two years later he shot Meta II: Vivir el sueño (2007), sequel to a sports drama about the signing and experience of a soccer player to reach a new team. Later he collaborated again with Joel Silver as producer with the film Orphan (2009), a thriller of suspense and mystery that was a blockbuster (number 4 in the United States) and participated in the fantastic film festival in Sitges. Thanks to Unknown (2011), again with Silver producing, Collet-Serra coincided for the first time with Liam Neeson in an intrigue with amnesia and false identity that reached number 1 in the US box office. Non-Stop (2014), another thriller with Neeson and Joel Silver's production, took him back to No. 1 at the box office in the United States. Two years later, a new actor in his career, Liam Neeson, in another action thriller entitled Run All Night (2015), the history of cinema takes place over the course of a night, and Neeson plays a former hit man. who defends his own son from a gang of gangsters who want to kill him. His next work was The Shallows (2016), a suspense thriller starring Blake Lively whose plot focuses on the attack of a white shark on a young surfer. The movie also had great success at the box office.

WHAT'S THE STORY? In THE COMMUTER, Michael MacCauley (Liam Neeson) has worked as an insurance salesman for 10 years, riding the train in and out of New York each day, on both good days and bad. Then he loses his job, just when he needs to pay for his son's college tuition. On the train home, a woman he doesn't know (Vera Farmiga) asks MacCauley whether, in exchange for $100,000, he'd be willing to find a single passenger, one who doesn't belong, and plant a tracer on the passenger's bag. MacCauley soon learns that his wife and son will be in danger if he doesn't take the offer and follow the rules. So he goes about trying to find the unknown passenger, though each time he comes close, the game takes a new turn. When the train begins to hurtle out of control, headed for derailment, he realizes just how high the stakes really are -- and how much power the forces of evil have. Can MacCauley solve the puzzle before it's too late?
