El Pasajero es la cuarta colaboración a nivel cinematográfico entre el destacado actor irlandés y el director español Jaume Collet-Serra, después de "Desconocido - Sin identidad" del año 2011, "Non Stop" girada en el 2014 y " Corre toda la noche " del 2015.

En esta nueva versión de su carrera actoral el actor irlandés le presta una adecuada fisicalidad a sus personajes sin despojarlos del rol del ciudadano ciudadano, héroe cotidiano, con rasgos un poco melancólicos, tal vez perdedores en el aspecto económico de suvida, anónimos, pero con un alto sentido de la justicia.

Michael MacCauley es un viajero y padre de familia que conduce una vida rutinaria, moderada y lo más cercano a la normalidad que se pueda concebir, vive en una localidad llamada Tarrytown, toma el tren habitual todos los días para ir a trabajadar a Manhattan.
Después de años de servicio en el NYPD (New York Police Department) ha comenzado a trabajar en el sector de los seguros hasta que un día lo despiden.
En el tren que lo lleva de regreso a su casa se le acerca una mujer que se hace llamar Joanna quien le ofrece un desafío: encontrar un pasajero, con el nombre en clave de Prynne, cuya permanencia pone en peligro la de todos los demás ocupantes ya que dentro de una bolsa lleva un artículo robado y ella debe recuperarlo.
Para ello Michael (Liam Neeson) debe encontrar esta persona, colocarle un GPS en su bolsa y dejar el tren antes de que Prynne se baje en la estación de Cold Spring. A cambio de ello recibirá una recompensa de 100.000 USD que serán pagados de la siguiente manera: 25.000 USD en un baño del tren y los restantes 75.000 USD cuando la operación esté concluída.
Michael, que inicialmente piensa se trate de una broma, con el pasar de los minutos y vencido por la curiosidad finalmente se dirige al lugar que le indicaron en uno de los baños, encontrando el anticipo de 25.000 USD Y entendiendo así que no es un juego. Es una suma que resolvería muchos de sus actuales y futuros problemas económicos, por lo cuál decide hacer la cosa más simple: tomar los 25.000 USD y dejar el tren sin involucrarse demasiado.
Lo que no sabe es que está constantemente vigilado. Así, al bajarse del tren, se le acerca una chica con un sobre que contienen el anillo de bodas de su esposa adentro, lo que es implícitamente una amenzaza que si no cumple las consecuencias las pagarán los integrantes de su familia.
Trata de avisar a la policía a través de un colega que viaja en el tren con el único resultado de verlo arrojado debajo de un autobús inmediatamente después de bajarse en la estación siguiente.
Entre la desesperación de Michael que ve el tren que se acerca al destino de Cold Spring y la imposibilidad de descubrir al verdadero Prynne aisla a todos los sospechosos (en realidad cinco) entre los cuales puede estar el presunto sujeto. Mientras tanto una llamada telefónica de Joanna le informa que aú no ha descubierto el verdadero Prynne, instándolo a continuar su búsqueda si quiere evitar que su familia sea asesinada.
En un estado paranoico y al límite de su propia incolumnidad mental Michael se da cuenta de que siempre se ha equivocado de persona y que Prynne es en realidad quien estaba sentada a su lado: una joven llamada Sophia.
A través de ella de que ha sidfo testigo del asesinato de su primo, un urbanista, y que sacó un disco duro de la escena del crimen que prueba el comportamiento ilícito de muchas personalidades a la vista de Nueva York, entre funcionarios públicos y policías.
Gracias a la intervención del SWAT el testigo es protegido y algunos de los responsables arrestados.
Poco tiempo después viajando en tren Michael descubre por casualidad de nuevo a Joanna y mostrándole el distintivo (ha vuelto a su anterior trabajo) la arresta.
Michael MacCauley is a commuter and family man who leads a routine, subdued life as close to normal as you can conceive, living in a town called Tarrytown, taking the regular train every day to work in Manhattan.
After years of service in the NYPD (New York Police Department) he has started working in the insurance industry until one day he gets laid off.
On the train that takes him back home he is approached by a woman who calls herself Joanna who offers him a challenge: to find a passenger, codenamed Prynne, whose stay endangers all other occupants because inside a bag carries a stolen item and she must retrieve it.
To do this Michael (Liam Neeson) must find this person, place a GPS in her bag and leave the train before Prynne gets off at Cold Spring station. In exchange for this he will receive a reward of $100,000 USD to be paid as follows: $25,000 USD in a train bathroom and the remaining $75,000 USD when the operation is completed.
Michael, who initially thinks it is a joke, with the passing of the minutes and overcome by curiosity, finally goes to the place indicated in one of the bathrooms, finding the advance of 25,000 USD and thus understanding that it is not a game. It is a sum that would solve many of his current and future economic problems, so he decides to do the simplest thing: take the 25,000 USD and leave the train without getting too involved.
What he doesn't know is that he is constantly being watched. So, as he gets off the train, he is approached by a girl with an envelope containing his wife's wedding ring inside, which is implicitly a threat that if he doesn't comply the consequences will be paid by his family members.
He tries to alert the police through a colleague traveling on the train with the only result of seeing him thrown under a bus immediately after getting off at the next station.
Between Michael's desperation as he sees the train approaching the Cold Spring destination and the impossibility of discovering the real Prynne isolates all the suspects (actually five) among whom the alleged subject may be. Meanwhile a phone call from Joanna informs him that he has not yet discovered the real Prynne, urging him to continue his search if he wants to prevent his family from being killed.
In a paranoid state and at the edge of his own mental incolumnity Michael realizes that he has always been the wrong person and that Prynne is actually the one who was sitting next to him: a young woman named Sophia.
Through her he learns that she witnessed the murder of his cousin, a city planner, and that she removed a hard drive from the crime scene that proves the illicit behavior of many personalities in New York City, including public officials and police officers.
Thanks to the intervention of SWAT, the witness is protected and some of those responsible are arrested.
A short time later, while traveling by train, Michael discovers Joanna again by chance and shows her the badge (she has returned to her previous job) and arrests her.

El guión sufre de bastantes altibajos y por momentos es irregular, pero hay algunas secuencias y algunos flasbacks del director mostrando como es la vida familiar del personaje principal que permiten disimularlos.
Tal vez sea esa la intención de la trama. Cómo un hombre común puede reacionar puesto delante de emergencias extremas.
Hay un gran trabajo con la cámara con movimientos incesantes dentro de los vagones siguiendo de cerca a su protagonista, las luchas dentro del mismo, la intervención del SWAP, etc pero lo más creíble es el suspenso que nos lleva al final sin saber a ciencia cierta quien es el principal sospechoso.
The script suffers from many ups and downs and is irregular at times, but there are some sequences and some flashbacks of the director showing the family life of the main character that allow to disguise them.
Perhaps that is the intention of the plot. How an ordinary man can react in the face of extreme emergencies.
There is a great work with the camera with incessant movements inside the carriages following closely the main character, the fights inside the carriage, the SWAP intervention, etc. But the most credible thing is the suspense that takes us to the end without knowing for sure who the main suspect is.
