Hello cinephile friends, as you already know, I love retro cinema, so on Sundays when I have free time, I take the opportunity to watch some old movies. This time it was the turn of Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, a gem from the 90's, and which I'm sure many of you enjoyed back in the day, I was six years old when it was released in 1991 but I enjoyed it years later and of course I still watch it now whenever I can.

En esta ocasión le tocó el turno a Robin Hood, Príncipe de los Ladrones, una joya de los años 90, y la cual estoy segura de que muchos de ustedes disfrutaron en su tiempo, yo tenía seis años cuando se estrenó en 1991 pero la disfruté años más tarde y desde luego sigo viéndola actualmente cada vez que puedo.

This film is based on the legend of the English hero Robin Hood, or Robin of Locksley, as he is also known. According to the film, Robin was a young nobleman who had gone to Jerusalem with King Richard on crusade to try to regain the territory lost to the Muslims, his father disagreed but he still went. In the king's absence, England came under the rule of the despot and cruel Sheriff of Nothinghan, who rebelled against the king, levied exorbitant taxes on the people, and stole the estates of the nobles who were still loyal to Richard. Thus Robin of Locksley's father was wrongly accused of being a devil worshipper and his estates were confiscated.

When Robin managed to escape from the prison where he was trapped in Jerusalem, he returned to England with Azeen, a very loyal Muslim who became his friend and swore to follow him to save his life and repay the favour of having freed him from captivity, but when Robin arrived home and saw that his lands were confiscated, he confronted the Sheriff's men, killing four of them, He confronted the Sheriff's men, killing four of them, which made him an outlaw and left him no choice but to take refuge in Sherwood Forest, where he had to earn the respect and admiration of the inhabitants who took refuge there, trying to escape the Sheriff's abuses.

Although the story has some inconsistencies, which I will talk about later, overall it is very good, moving and above all leaves us with a great positive message, which I will also talk about later.

A pesar de que la historia tiene algunas inconsistencias de las cuales hablaré más adelante, en términos generales es bastante buena, conmovedora y sobre todo nos deja un gran mensaje positivo, del cual también les hablaré más adelante.

One of the things that touched me the most was the scene where Peter (Robin's childhood friend who was imprisoned with him in Jerusalem) was wounded while escaping, then said goodbye to Robin by asking him to look after his sister, Lady Marian, and said "Tell my sister that I died a free Englishman".

Without a doubt one of my favourite characters in this film is Azeen, played wonderfully by Morgan Freeman, I like the character because he is a bit enigmatic, very loyal and with a great nobility, his ethical value was so great that he did not mind travelling with Robin to England where he would be badly received due to his condition as an Islamic man, just to fulfil the promise of saving his life. I love his lines in the script "The hospitality in your country is as warm as the temperature".

Another of Azeen's most significant lines is "How could your uneducated ilk take Jerusalem?" he said this after Robin used a telescope for the first time, and upon seeing the sheriff's henchmen closer than they actually were, he drew his sword to confront them, a rather comical scene that also helped to dissipate some of the tension of the moment.

Another of my favourite characters is the Sheriff of Nothingham, played by Alan Rickman. He is a very energetic character, but Rickman knew very well how to handle the emotions of this character, on the one hand we see him being apparently peaceful, even sweet and gentlemanly when he is in the church and in front of Lady Marian, but when he is confronted by Robin, he explodes like dynamite and shows himself as he is. We can even see some physical signs of this contained energy that suddenly explodes, as he is never in one place, he walks from one side to the other, moves his fingers frantically and shouts expletives. My favourite line from the sheriff will always be "I'll take your heart out with a spoon".

Otro de mis personajes favoritos es el Sheriff de Nothingham, interpretado por Alan Rickman. Es un personaje muy enérgico, pero Rickman supo muy bien como manejar las emociones de este personaje, por una parte lo vemos siendo aparentemente apacible, incluso dulce y caballeroso cuando está en la iglesia y frente a Lady Marian, pero cuando es enfrentado por Robin, explota como dinamita y se muestra tal cual es. incluso podemos ver algunos signos físicos de esta energía contenida que de pronto estalla, ya que nunca está en un mismo lugar, camina de un lado a otro, mueve los dedos de forma frenética y grita improperios. Mi frase favorita del sheriff siempre será "Te sacaré el corazón con una cuchara"

Without a doubt, I believe that Rickman used the Clown technique, very much used by actors, especially theatre actors, to play characters with a comic edge, and it is even said that he asked some of his friends who were comedians for advice on how to improvise his lines. We notice the touch of comedy in his exaggerated tantrums and his foul phrases "You go to my bedroom at 10 pm, and you at 10:45" referring to some girls he had kidnapped in the castle.

As for the cinematography of the film, wow! it's great, beautiful landscapes, I especially love the scenes of Sherwood Forest, the aerial shots over the trees and colourful and cheerful scenes that represent the peace and quiet of the place, on the other hand the scenes of Nothingham Castle are quite dark, especially those concerning Mortianna, the terrible witch, mother of the Sheriff, by the way, as for this character, I didn't like her characterisation, I found it too caricatured.

En cuanto a la fotografía de la película ¡Wow! es grandiosa, paisajes bellísimos, sobre todo me encantan las escenas del bosque de Sherwood, los planos aéreos sobre los árboles y escenas coloridas y alegres que representan la tranquilidad y paz del lugar, por otra parte las escenas del castillo de Nothingham son bastante oscuras, sobre todo las que conciernen a Mortianna, la terrible bruja, madre del Sheriff, por cierto, en cuanto a este personaje, no me gustó su caracterización, me pareció excesivamente caricaturesca.

One of the most notable inconsistencies is Kevin Coster's accent, which doesn't sound like an English accent at all, and certainly doesn't fit in with the rest of the characters, we are talking about someone who played Robin of Locksley, none other than the protagonist of one of England's most iconic legends. I have nothing against Costner's performance, in fact, in my humble opinion I think it was very well done, although I think he was overshadowed by the energy and skill of Rickman, however we must take into account that they were playing very opposite characters, but I think he should have taken more time to practice his accent and give more realism to his character.

Another inconsistency that, in my opinion, reveals the weakness of the script, is the fact that the first appearance of Lady Marian, shows us that she is an empowered, strong woman who knows how to defend herself when she thinks that Robin is an intruder who wants to kidnap her, she was so cunning that she made her wet nurse pretend to be her, while she attacked Robin, finally he manages to break her but it takes a lot of work because the woman knows how to fight very well.

Otra de las inconsistencias que, en mi opinión, deja en evidencia la debilidad del guión, es el hecho de que la primera aparición de Lady Marian, nos demuestra que es una mujer empoderada, fuerte y que sabe como defenderse a sí misma cuando piensa que Robin es un intruso que quiere raptarla, fue tan astuta que hizo que su nodriza se hiciera pasar por ella, mientras ella atacaba a Robin, finalmente él logra doblegarla pero le cuesta mucho trabajo porque la mujer sabe luchar muy bien.

I swear I thought that was great and I loved that Lady Marian was a very self-sufficient woman, but how can you explain that if she could fight so well, she couldn't fight the Sheriff and escape from him when he was trying to force her to marry him and then rape her? God, I found it terribly frustrating to see her standing there like a statue while Robin fought the Sheriff, only intervening on a couple of occasions to do something almost irrelevant like throw some hot wax at the villain. I think if I were her I would have joined Robin in the fight, and two against one it would have been easier to defeat the sheriff, but clearly giving her the role of "damsel in distress" raised the level of heroism of the protagonist.

Les juro que eso me pareció grandioso y amé que lady Marian fuese una mujer muy autosuficiente, pero ¿cómo pueden explicar que si ella sabía luchar tan bien, no pudo luchar contra el sheriff y escapar de él cuando él pretendía obligarla a casarse con él y posteriormente violarla? ¡Dios! me pareció terriblemente frustrante verla parada como estatua mientras Robin luchaba contra el Sheriff, solo intervino en un par de ocasiones para hacer algo casi irrelevante como arrojarle un poco de cera caliente al villano. Creo que yo en su lugar me hubiese unido a Robin en la lucha, y así, dos contra uno hubiese sido más fácil derrotar al sheriff, pero es evidente que darle a ella el rol de "damisela en peligro" elevaba el nivel de heroísmo del protagonista.

However, if we talk about the fight as such, I think it was very well choreographed, I thought it was excellent.

As for the soundtrack I thought it was great, wonderful, with melodies according to each scene that help the viewer to enter in context, for example, I love when Robin and Azeen enter Sherwood Forest for the first time, and then the chords of the main theme of the film "Everything I do, I do it for you" starts off gentle and slow as the two characters enter the forest and get to know it, then the rhythm changes to faster bits as the forest tribe comes out of hiding to confront Robin and his friend Azeen, and finally the melody becomes more sober in the fight scene between Robin and the leader of the outcasts.

En cuanto al Soundtrack me pareció genial, maravilloso, con melodías acordes a cada escena que ayudan al espectador a entrar en contexto, por ejemplo, me encanta cuando Robin y Azeen entran al bosque de Sherwood por primera vez, y entonces suenan los acordes del tema principal de la película "Everything I do, I do it for you" empieza de forma apacible y lenta conforme ambos personajes van entrando al bosque y lo van conociendo, luego el ritmo cambia a unos bits más rápidos mientras la tribu del bosque sale de su escondite para enfrentar a Robin y a su amigo Azeen, y finalmente la melodía se vuelve más sobria en la escena de la pelea entre Robin y el líder de los marginados.

I think that although the script was very weak, the story in general is quite good and above all it teaches us many lessons such as the benefits of teamwork, what people can achieve when they are organised and have a good leader. By the way I loved Robin's speech when he talks to the inhabitants of the forest, who are scared to death by the attacks of the Sheriff's men, Robin taught them to fight, he told them that alone they had little chance, but together they could be invincible to achieve their goal, and here I must mention two of his phrases "I'd rather die than spend my life hiding" and "a man who defends his home is worth ten soldiers".

Creo que si bien el guión estuvo muy débil, la historia en general es bastante buena y sobre todo nos deja muchas enseñanzas como los beneficios del trabajo en equipo, lo que pueden lograr las personas cuando se organizan y tienen un buen líder. A propósito de esto me encantó el discurso de Robin cuando les habla a los habitantes del bosque, los cuales están muertos de miedo por los ataques de los hombres del Sheriff, Robin les enseñó a luchar, les dijo que solos tenían pocas posibilidades, pero juntos podían ser invencibles para lograr su objetivo, y aquí debo mencionar dos de sus frases "Prefiero morir que pasar la vida escondido" y "un hombre que defiende su hogar vale por diez soldados"

I also liked Azeen's line when they were trying to enter Nothinghan castle "I am not one of you, but I fight alongside Robin Hood for freedom", with this he managed to increase the power of his "army" as more people from the town (dissatisfied with the sheriff's management) joined the rebellion.

También me gustó una frase de Azeen cuando intentaban ingresar al castillo de Nothinghan "No soy uno de vosotros, pero lucho junto a Robin Hood por la libertad", con esto consiguió aumentar el poder de su "ejército" ya que más personas del pueblo (inconformes con la gestión del sheriff) se unieron a la rebelión.
