Last weekend I spent my time watching movies I found on Netflix, but I came across some classics that were calling to me, hehe 😄 and I couldn't resist, because they're movies from my youth, like Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. I think this movie is from the '90s, but I remember going to see it in theaters back then for two reasons: one, because the main character was Kevin Costner, and the other, because I really liked the main song by Ryan Adams.
It's based on an English legend, that of Robin Hood. Who doesn't know at least the basics about this hero, or anti-hero, as you prefer? He robbed the rich to feed the poor, but the film goes a step further and adds more depth to the story and the characters.
Robin was not born an outcast; on the contrary, he was born into nobility. However, circumstances forced him to rebel against the system. In the absence of King Richard (who was away on the Crusades), England was dominated by the fearsome Sheriff of Nottingham. High taxes, corruption, and abuses against the population forced many to live on the margins of society, finding refuge in Sherwood Forest. Later, Robin joined the clan of people dissatisfied with the new impositions and began trying to restore power to their true king, but it certainly would not be an easy task.
The plot is very interesting; it speaks of justice and values like honesty, loyalty, and identity, but it also speaks of acceptance. At the beginning, Robin isn't accepted by the people of Sherwood because they don't see him as their equal. This leaves Robin in a social limbo: he no longer belongs to the nobles, but neither to the poor. So he has to prove that his heart is with justice and that he's not willing to accept the sheriff's abuses. It's a class struggle, yes, but the story also shows us that we're not so different because, in the end, we share the same origin. In fact, Robin discovered he had a brother among the outcasts.
And although I love Kevin Costner and think he did an excellent job in this film, I believe it's undeniable that Alan Rickman completely shone in his antagonistic role. It's no secret that he was very good at playing villains, but this was clearly a different kind of villain, with other nuances, I'd even say cartoonish. But it was that touch that made him especially charismatic, and the best part is that despite all that charisma and funny scenes, the guy was still terrifying, because he gave his character an impressive touch of mental dissociation.
The locations are gorgeous. I don't know if they actually filmed in the real Sherwood Forest, but I love the landscapes the film shows. I really feel like they transport you to that era and put you in context with the story. The same goes for the soundtrack; the scenes are very well accompanied by it, especially at the climax of the film. But above all, I loved hearing the chords of the main theme right at the moment when Robin kills the Sheriff and rescues Lady Marianne.
Speaking of this character, I think I have a kind of love/hate relationship with her. Even though she was initially portrayed as a strong character who could defend herself very well, in the end she needed Robin's help to get rid of the Sheriff. It's not that the fact itself bothers me too much; it was quite normal at that time for women to be depicted as fragile. But I think they shouldn't have shown her from the beginning as someone capable of facing any opponent. Even so, I also found her to be a charismatic character, and sometimes her dialogue made me laugh, like when she said that for that amount they were offering, she would be willing to hand Robin over herself.
The pairing of Kevin Costner and the great Morgan Freeman is absolutely wonderful and makes the film more dynamic. In my opinion, it was a great choice for weekend entertainment and a reminder of my younger days. Thanks for reading my post, sending you virtual kisses and hugs!

›Film Review: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991)50@drax1372d
Many Hollywood films these days become subject of debates dealing with cultural appropriation, “wokeness” and (mis)casting characters with actors of wrong race or ethnicity. Such debates, while intense, generally have very little to do with actual quality of films that can succeed and fail regardless of such details. One of the earliest examples was controversy over casting and other creative decisions in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, 1991 period action adventure directed by Kevin Reynolds, which actually became one of the most popular films of its time.
The film, as the title suggests, is based on the medieval English legends about character who would become world’s best known fictional socialist and whose name would be forever associated with some very directs methods of wealth redistribution. In the film, however, he begins as Robin of Loxley (played by Kevin Costner), member of English nobility who had as a young man heeded the call of King Richard the Lionheart and joined Third Crusade. The attempt to liberate the Holy Land from Muslims failed and the plot begins in 1194 when Robin is prisoner in Muslim-controlled Jerusalem. He manages to escape and also helps liberate Muslim prisoner Azeem Edin Bashir Al Bakir (played by Morgan Freeman) who feels obligated to follow Robin back to England. There Robin finds that his father Lord Locksley (played by Brian Blessed) was falsely accused of devil worshipping and executed by evil Sheriff of Nothingham (played by Alan Rickman) who had seized family’s lands. Robin soon finds that many people, especially commoners, in the area share the same predicament. Sheriff uses King’s absence to enforce reign of terror and tax people to death in order to finance his attempt to seize the power in entire country. As a result, many people who can’t pay are forced to poach deer in order to survive, which makes them outlaw. Their hideout is Sherwood Forrest where Robin comes and becomes their leader in struggle for freedom and justice, which is also aided by his childhood friend Lady Marian (played by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio).
Prince of Thieves was massive hit and would have been at the top of year’s box office if not for Cameron’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Today it is, however, best known as the film in which Kevin Costner disgraced himself by not bothering even to try speaking with British accent. While using his native American accent might have been legitimate, it created problems for audience to suspend disbelief, especially in scenes where he interacts with characters played by British actors who use their native accents. This, however, isn’t the worst problem with Costner in this film. He simply played his role very poorly (and deserved Razzie for Worst Actor), relying mostly on his stellar charisma at the height of personal popularity to carry film and quite successfully bring armies of his fans to cinema.
His performance, however, looks even worse when compared with other members of cast, many of whom did very good job. At first, idea to introduce black Muslim character to Robin Hood story looked like an early example of “political correctness” or cynical attempt to bring more African American and other minority viewers to cinemas. Yet, it wasn’t the original idea – popular 1980s BBC series Robin of Sherwood also featured Muslim character named Nasir. In this case, Morgan Freeman is actually the best thing about Prince of Thieves. His confident performance of a character with wisdom and dignity serves as backbone of the film. Furthermore, his presence served as valuable antidote to Arabophobia and Islamophobia which had been stirred by chauvinist hysteria in USA before First Gulf War. Furthermore, his character very effectively teaches audience of some details of medieval world that were usually ignored by Hollywood period films – like Islamic world being culturally, scientifically and technologically superior to Christian West at times when stories of Robin Hood take place.
Other attempts to spice up Robin Hood story with something original aren’t that successful. Script by Pen Densham and John Watson doesn’t bother much with historical and political background (Prince John is absent from the film). Instead, they add motives of black magic and witchcraft, represented by Sheriff’s confederate Mortianna (played by Geraldine McEwan under heavy makeup), while Sheriff uses services of mercenaries called “Celts” that are depicted as Iron Age barbarians that somehow missed thousand years of cultural and technological developments in Europe. Those anachronisms, however, aren’t that problematic as Densham and Watson adding unnecessary subplot of Will Scarlett as rebellious young man (probably in order to attract fans of Christian Slater who played the character) that turns this film into cheap melodrama.
One of the most debatable elements of the film is Alan Rickman in role of chief villain. The production was, despite huge budgets, quite messy and producers allowed Rickman almost free reign to do with his role what he pleased. The result was unhinged performance with many ad-libbed lines that makes character of Sheriff going over the top almost turning the film into parody of itself, while at the same time adding bits of black humour in what would be otherwise be too serious and often dark story (which also features some family-unfriendly content like mutilations and implied rape). On the other hand, Kevin Costner’s good friend Kevin Reynolds directs film with great confidence and stages couple of well-made action scenes. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is good in her role despite lacking any chemistry with Costner; she is convincing as very active and hand-on Lady Marian, in some ways giving some hints of proto-feminism to the character. Michael McShane is also good in the role of Friar Tuck, despite providing too conventional comic relief. That, together composer with Michael Kamen delivering one of his most memorable scores, turns Prince of Thieves into flawed, but entertaining piece of Hollywood reimagining of an old legend.
Hello cinephile friends, as you already know, I love retro cinema, so on Sundays when I have free time, I take the opportunity to watch some old movies. This time it was the turn of Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves, a gem from the 90's, and which I'm sure many of you enjoyed back in the day, I was six years old when it was released in 1991 but I enjoyed it years later and of course I still watch it now whenever I can.

Short Summary
Breve Resumen
This film is based on the legend of the English hero Robin Hood, or Robin of Locksley, as he is also known. According to the film, Robin was a young nobleman who had gone to Jerusalem with King Richard on crusade to try to regain the territory lost to the Muslims, his father disagreed but he still went. In the king's absence, England came under the rule of the despot and cruel Sheriff of Nothinghan, who rebelled against the king, levied exorbitant taxes on the people, and stole the estates of the nobles who were still loyal to Richard. Thus Robin of Locksley's father was wrongly accused of being a devil worshipper and his estates were confiscated.
When Robin managed to escape from the prison where he was trapped in Jerusalem, he returned to England with Azeen, a very loyal Muslim who became his friend and swore to follow him to save his life and repay the favour of having freed him from captivity, but when Robin arrived home and saw that his lands were confiscated, he confronted the Sheriff's men, killing four of them, He confronted the Sheriff's men, killing four of them, which made him an outlaw and left him no choice but to take refuge in Sherwood Forest, where he had to earn the respect and admiration of the inhabitants who took refuge there, trying to escape the Sheriff's abuses.
Although the story has some inconsistencies, which I will talk about later, overall it is very good, moving and above all leaves us with a great positive message, which I will also talk about later.
One of the things that touched me the most was the scene where Peter (Robin's childhood friend who was imprisoned with him in Jerusalem) was wounded while escaping, then said goodbye to Robin by asking him to look after his sister, Lady Marian, and said "Tell my sister that I died a free Englishman".
Without a doubt one of my favourite characters in this film is Azeen, played wonderfully by Morgan Freeman, I like the character because he is a bit enigmatic, very loyal and with a great nobility, his ethical value was so great that he did not mind travelling with Robin to England where he would be badly received due to his condition as an Islamic man, just to fulfil the promise of saving his life. I love his lines in the script "The hospitality in your country is as warm as the temperature".
Another of Azeen's most significant lines is "How could your uneducated ilk take Jerusalem?" he said this after Robin used a telescope for the first time, and upon seeing the sheriff's henchmen closer than they actually were, he drew his sword to confront them, a rather comical scene that also helped to dissipate some of the tension of the moment.
Another of my favourite characters is the Sheriff of Nothingham, played by Alan Rickman. He is a very energetic character, but Rickman knew very well how to handle the emotions of this character, on the one hand we see him being apparently peaceful, even sweet and gentlemanly when he is in the church and in front of Lady Marian, but when he is confronted by Robin, he explodes like dynamite and shows himself as he is. We can even see some physical signs of this contained energy that suddenly explodes, as he is never in one place, he walks from one side to the other, moves his fingers frantically and shouts expletives. My favourite line from the sheriff will always be "I'll take your heart out with a spoon".
Without a doubt, I believe that Rickman used the Clown technique, very much used by actors, especially theatre actors, to play characters with a comic edge, and it is even said that he asked some of his friends who were comedians for advice on how to improvise his lines. We notice the touch of comedy in his exaggerated tantrums and his foul phrases "You go to my bedroom at 10 pm, and you at 10:45" referring to some girls he had kidnapped in the castle.
As for the cinematography of the film, wow! it's great, beautiful landscapes, I especially love the scenes of Sherwood Forest, the aerial shots over the trees and colourful and cheerful scenes that represent the peace and quiet of the place, on the other hand the scenes of Nothingham Castle are quite dark, especially those concerning Mortianna, the terrible witch, mother of the Sheriff, by the way, as for this character, I didn't like her characterisation, I found it too caricatured.
One of the most notable inconsistencies is Kevin Coster's accent, which doesn't sound like an English accent at all, and certainly doesn't fit in with the rest of the characters, we are talking about someone who played Robin of Locksley, none other than the protagonist of one of England's most iconic legends. I have nothing against Costner's performance, in fact, in my humble opinion I think it was very well done, although I think he was overshadowed by the energy and skill of Rickman, however we must take into account that they were playing very opposite characters, but I think he should have taken more time to practice his accent and give more realism to his character.
Another inconsistency that, in my opinion, reveals the weakness of the script, is the fact that the first appearance of Lady Marian, shows us that she is an empowered, strong woman who knows how to defend herself when she thinks that Robin is an intruder who wants to kidnap her, she was so cunning that she made her wet nurse pretend to be her, while she attacked Robin, finally he manages to break her but it takes a lot of work because the woman knows how to fight very well.
I swear I thought that was great and I loved that Lady Marian was a very self-sufficient woman, but how can you explain that if she could fight so well, she couldn't fight the Sheriff and escape from him when he was trying to force her to marry him and then rape her? God, I found it terribly frustrating to see her standing there like a statue while Robin fought the Sheriff, only intervening on a couple of occasions to do something almost irrelevant like throw some hot wax at the villain. I think if I were her I would have joined Robin in the fight, and two against one it would have been easier to defeat the sheriff, but clearly giving her the role of "damsel in distress" raised the level of heroism of the protagonist.
However, if we talk about the fight as such, I think it was very well choreographed, I thought it was excellent.
Soundtrack
As for the soundtrack I thought it was great, wonderful, with melodies according to each scene that help the viewer to enter in context, for example, I love when Robin and Azeen enter Sherwood Forest for the first time, and then the chords of the main theme of the film "Everything I do, I do it for you" starts off gentle and slow as the two characters enter the forest and get to know it, then the rhythm changes to faster bits as the forest tribe comes out of hiding to confront Robin and his friend Azeen, and finally the melody becomes more sober in the fight scene between Robin and the leader of the outcasts.
Positive message
Mensaje positivo
I think that although the script was very weak, the story in general is quite good and above all it teaches us many lessons such as the benefits of teamwork, what people can achieve when they are organised and have a good leader. By the way I loved Robin's speech when he talks to the inhabitants of the forest, who are scared to death by the attacks of the Sheriff's men, Robin taught them to fight, he told them that alone they had little chance, but together they could be invincible to achieve their goal, and here I must mention two of his phrases "I'd rather die than spend my life hiding" and "a man who defends his home is worth ten soldiers".
I also liked Azeen's line when they were trying to enter Nothinghan castle "I am not one of you, but I fight alongside Robin Hood for freedom", with this he managed to increase the power of his "army" as more people from the town (dissatisfied with the sheriff's management) joined the rebellion.
We have reached the end of this post in which I left you my opinion about this film, in general terms I really liked the story, the photography, the performances and the soundtrack, that's why I can't say goodbye without leaving you here the main theme of the film in the voice of Bryan Adams "Everything I do, I do it for you".
I do, I do it for you"
Thank you very much for all your attention, friends.
›Loosetooth Reviews: Robin Hood: Prince of Theives (1991)@loosetooth2786d
Robin Hood is one of the most filmed characters in movie history, according to Wikipedia there are 78 films and Tv series in which he appears, either as the title character or as a bit part as played by John Cleese in Time Bandits. But few have had the cultural impact of Robin Hood: Prince of Theives.
Of course there are exceptions like Errol Flynn's swashbuckling effort in The Adventures of Robin Hood or Disney's 1973 animated classic.
Robin of Locksley (Kevin Costner) and Peter Debois find themselves imprisoned while fighting in the crusades. But they manage to escape with the help of a moor named Azeem (Morgan Freeman). While Peter is killed before they can leave Jerusalem, Robin and Azeem make it back to England.
In the meantime the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman) attempts to recruit Robin's father (Brian Blessed)in his mission to claim the crown. When Robin's father refuses he's killed and his lands taken by the Sheriff, once it's proclaimed Locksley senior is a devil worshipper.
As Robin and Azeem make their way to Robin's home, they encounter a young boy being chased by a group of soldiers led by the sheriff's cousin/lieutenant Guy of Gisborn. After dealing with Gisborn, the duo continue on to find the Locksley estate a smouldering heap and inside faithful servant Duncan amongst the ruins, blinded by Gisborn.
While Robin is visiting Maid Marion (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) the Sheriff turns up, and Robin and his friends escape into Sherwood Forest. The soldiers won't follow because the woods are believed to be haunted. In reality they're occupied by the various locals the Sheriff has made outlaw.
Robin convinces the forest dwellers to fight back against the sheriff, and with his leadership they start to rob from the rich and giving it to the poor people of Nottingham. Much to the Sheriff's annoyance.
Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves became the second highest grossing film of 1991 behind Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and Bryan Adams' theme song (Everythin I Do) I Do It For You set the record for the most consecutive week's at number one in the UK charts, and made a star out of Morgan Freeman.
It could have been a very different movie though, Cary Elwes was originally offered the part of Robin, but turned it down because he thought the plot was too ridiculous. Ironically he'd play the character two years later in Mel Brooks spoof Robin Hood: Men in Tights. Johnny Depp also turned down the part of Will Scarlett, later played by Christian Slater, and Sean Connery, who plays King Richard, was originally going to play Robin's father.
Alan Rickman's Sheriff, along with his turn asDie Hard's Hans Gruber, is one of cinema's greatest villains, but he actually turned down the role twice before he was given cache blanche to portray the Sheriff however he pleased. Rickman even got to re-write and ad-lib his lines.
"Robin Hood steals money from my pocket, forcing me to hurt the public, and they love him for it? That's it then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings...and call off Christmas"
What more could you want from Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? It's a classic adventure story, packed full of memorable characters and cracking dialogue. It was a must see movie in the early nineties, and it should be on the watchlist of anyone who wants to see a master class in villainary.
Have you seen Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves? What did you think? Let me know in the comments below.
›Insomniac Film Festival #118- Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves@rvgenaille3121d
I’ve always been amused by the mockery and hate for the “British” accents of Kevin Costner, as Robin of Locksley, and Christian Slater, as Will Scarlett. The English language as we recognize it today did not exist in the age that these stories take place. The era was firmly placed in the Middle English age, which would be unrecognizable to those of us speaking modern English. It’s just silly.
A more egregious issue would be the historical inaccuracy but Richard the Lionhearted has such a place in British, and Western, minds and hearts that there is no presentation of accuracy that would be acceptable I imagine.
Robin of Locksley returns from the Crusades, with his protector, Hazim, to find his father dead, accused of devil worship, lands confiscated. He embarks on a war against the Sheriff of Nottingham who is trying to oppress the population and seize the crown.
It’s a bit of an uneven mess. It’s also entertaining.
