Rarely does anything to do with fighting and martial arts catch my attention. It's not really my thing although I can't deny that it can be exciting (sometimes), so when this anime was recommended to me I decided to give it a chance but without too much faith. It ended up with me watching the old adaptation (2001) until I got to the Netflix one (2018)🤣.
Today I will tell you my opinion on this anime in general (both versions) with spoilers!
Synopsis
Baki Hanma is a young boy who is an exceptional fighter, known for getting into underground fights just to show how strong he is, although perhaps due to his own youth he remains impulsive and somewhat inexperienced.
He was raised by his mother Emi Akezawa who being a millionaire was able to pay for her son's professional training, since her dream is for him to be as incredibly good a fighter as his father, Yujiro Hanma. Baki even after completing professional training fails to catch up with his father, who defeats him again and again. So in order to become better, he goes in search of alternative training...
To my great surprise, I really liked this anime. It's not the best of all, but for fighting as its main plot, it is pretty well done. It has elements of fighting and martial arts, which is what the fights are based on, but it also has a lot of fiction because it's obviously an anime, not MMA. There are more realistic fights, others that are completely unrealistic, but what they all have in common is how entertaining and exciting they are.
I also really like that the protagonist doesn't end up being the tall, heavy guy with an extremely imposing physique, that's left to the antagonist. In reality, Baki is short with a good physique from all the rough training, of course, but compared to those he faces, he kinda looks small. That breaks the stereotype that to be the protagonist you have to be the best in every way, just as to be a good fighter you don't need to be huge.
Speaking of the character design, they are all impressive, they all stand out in some way and I think that is precisely what draws attention.
I also really liked that even though the story is not something deep, they added details that allow you to see a little of the character's psychology. It doesn't make it deep, I insist, but it does make it more elaborated than someone who only fights to be the strongest and that's it.
Baki is a boy deeply traumatized by his terrible relationship with his parents, suffering from an avoidant attachment bordering on disorganized, someone who doesn't know how to maintain a healthy relationship, someone who can even be afraid of being too close to another person, even more so of them getting to know too much about him.
The two people who were supposed to take care of him and love him, despised him. His mother used him to be able to win Yujiro's love, even bordering on a somewhat disturbing relationship because for Emi, Baki was her way of having her beloved close, so she wanted to mold him in his image. For Yujiro, his son would never be enough, he was just a hateful insect. He never wanted to be a father, just as he never loved Emi or the creature she fathered. Yujiro is just a capricious beast; an ogre.
I think that little depth in the plot (which if I remember correctly is more explored in the 2001 version) was what made me watch this anime. It is a secondary drama to the main thing, which is the fights, but it is interesting.
On the other hand, the animation can be highlighted. In the case of the 2001 version, it is not bad at all, nor is it something very remarkable, it is simply what was expected for its time. On the other hand, the Netflix adaptation in 2018 makes use of CGI, not everything, but just enough, obviously in the fights, which makes the movements look much more fluid. The only thing I have to criticize about the latest version is that the characters have a very exaggerated design in terms of musculature, which ends up being grotesque in many cases, and I really don't see it as necessary. The previous version showed very muscular guys but not exaggeratedly, which for me looks much better.
Overall, it's a pretty good anime, exciting and with plenty of action. Its story is quite simple but well structured, making you perfectly understand the motivation of each character, which is not only the fight. In this case, the fights are just the means to achieve something bigger and more important.
I think that if you like this type of stories, it's a very well-done and entertaining option to watch. Although I must admit that in the comparison of the two greats, that is, Baki and Kengan Ashura, Kengan is much better... But Baki is good😂 so I recommend it to you.

Rara vez algo que tenga que ver con lucha y artes marciales me llama la atención. Realmente no es lo mío aunque no puedo negar que llega a ser emocionante (a veces), por lo que cuando me recomendaron este anime decidí darle una oportunidad pero sin demasiada fe. Resultó en verme hasta la adaptación vieja (2001) hasta llegar a la de Netflix (2018)🤣.
Hoy les comentaré mi opinión sobre este anime en general (ambas versiones) ¡con spoilers!
Sinopsis
Baki Hanma es un joven muchacho que es un luchador excepcional, reconocido por meterse en peleas clandestinas solo para demostrar lo fuerte que es, aunque quizá por su propia juventud sigue siendo impulsivo y un tanto inexperto.
Él fue criado por su madre Emi Akezawa quien al ser una millonaria pudo costear el entrenamiento profesional de su hijo, puesto que su sueño es que él fuera tan increíblemente buen luchador como lo es su padre, Yujiro Hanma. Baki aún después de completar el entrenamiento profesional no logra alcanzar a su padre, quien lo derrota una y otra vez. Así que para lograr ser mejor, va en búsqueda de entrenamiento alternativo...
Para mi gran sorpresa me gustó mucho este anime. No es el mejor de todos pero para ser la lucha su trama principal está bastante bien hecho. Tiene elementos de la lucha y artes marciales que es en lo que basan las peleas, pero también tiene una gran carga de ficción porque obviamente es un anime, no la MMA. Hay peleas más realistas, otras completamente irrealistas pero lo que tienen todas en común es lo entretenidas y emocionantes que son.
Aparte me agrada mucho que el protagonista no llega a ser el tipo alto, muy pesado con un físico sumamente imponente, eso queda para el antagonista. En realidad, Baki es bajito con ciertamente un buen físico por todo el rudo entrenamiento, pero en comparación a quienes se enfrenta, se ve incluso pequeño. Eso rompe con el estereotipo de que para ser el protagonista debes ser el mejor en todos los sentidos, así como para ser buen luchador no necesitas ser enorme.
Justamente hablando del diseño de los personajes todos son imponentes, todos destacan de alguna forma y creo que es justamente eso lo que llama la atención.
También me gustó mucho que a pesar de que la historia no es algo profundo, le agregaron detalles que te permite ver un poco la psicología del personaje. No lo hace profundo, insisto, pero sí algo más elaborado que alguien que sólo pelea por ser el más fuerte y ya.
Baki es un chico profundamente traumatizado por su terrible relación con sus padres, sufriendo un apego evitativo rayando en el desorganizado, alguien que no sabe cómo mantener una relación saludable, alguien que incluso puede sentir miedo de estar demasiado cerca de otra persona, más aún de que lleguen a saber mucho sobre él.
Las dos personas que se supone debían cuidar de él y amarlo, lo despreciaban. Su madre lo utilizaba para poder ganar el amor de Yujiro, rayando incluso en una relación un tanto perturbadora porque para Emi, Baki era su manera de tener a su amado cerca, por lo que quería moldearlo a su imagen. Para Yujiro su hijo nunca sería suficiente, era solo un insecto destestable. Él jamás quiso ser padre, así como nunca amó ni a Emi ni a la criatura que enjendró. Yujiro es solo una bestia caprichosa; un ogro.
Creo que esa pequeña profundidad en la trama (que si mal no recuerdo es más explorada en la versión del 2001) fue lo que me hizo ver este anime. Es un drama secundario a lo principal que son las peleas, pero es interesante.
Por otro lado se puede destacar la animación. En el caso de la versión del 2001 no está nada mal, tampoco es algo muy destacable, es simplemente lo essperado para su época. En cambio la adaptación de Netflix en el 2018 hace uso del CGI no es todo pero sí lo justo, obviamente en las peleas, lo que hace que los movimientos se vean mucho más fluidos. Lo único que debo criticar de la última versión es que los personajes tienen un diseño muy exagerado en cuanto a musculatura, lo cual termina resultando hasta grotesco en muchos casos, y realmente no lo veo necesario. La versión anterior mostraba tipos muy musculados pero no exagerado, lo cual para mí queda mucho mejor.
En general es un anime bastante bueno, emocionante y con acción de sobra. Su historia es bastante simple pero bien estructurada, haciendo que entiendas perfectamente la motivación de cada personaje la cual no es solamente la lucha. En este caso, las peleas son solo un medio para conseguir algo más grande e importante.
Creo que si te gustan este tipo de historias es una opción muy bien lograda y entretenida de ver. Aunque debo admitir que en la comparación de los dos grandes, es decir, Baki y Kengan Ashura, Kengan es mucho mejor... Pero Baki está bien😂 así que te lo recomiendo.
