Flee, a magnificent film that immerses us in modern Odysseys (ENG) | Flee, una película magnífica que nos sumerge en Odiseas modernas (ESP)

Review by @marcybetancourt · 1633d · of Flee

Hello hivefriends movie lovers.

When I saw that this film had won at Sundance and other independent film awards, I was not surprised. Danish cinema is usually daring and has discursive approaches that thrill movie audiences.

Then, it came to my attention that at the Oscars it had been nominated in three categories: Best International Film, Best Animated Film and Best Documentary Film. Honestly, this was more surprising.

I set out to find the film so I could have my own opinion. Here are my appreciations.

First, obviously, it is an animated film as it was made with 2D technique. It does not try, at any time, to innovate in this technique. What it seeks to do is to tell a story and keep the identity of the protagonist intact. Therefore, the strategy worked because there is a story, there is a script, there is a voice that acts as a guiding thread and undoubtedly the film was enhanced because it involves us, makes us reflect and causes us curiosity.

In this sense, that is to say in terms of technique, I remember the film Persepolis, a few years ago, which, without falling into sentimentality, showed a kind of denunciation told in animation. Of course, Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud worked on the graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi herself, so the film had another nuance.

Why does Jonas Poher Rasmussen turn to animated film? Because it is a story that tells the life of 'Amin' and his family from Kabul to Copenhagen; as well as the illegal crossing of several borders, the human collapse of the Afghan population in the face of the violence of wars and political corruption. In addition, it also tells of cultural and personal conflicts.

Rasmussen found a way to make a 90-minute film to unleash the new Odysseys of humanity: exile, homosexuality, politics, human trafficking and culture, among the main themes; approached with simplicity but unveiling horror and tragedy.

I cannot be totally objective on this point, that is to say on the themes, since my compatriots have also walked out of Venezuela, crossing borders, to flee the political, economic and social tragedy that my country suffers. In any case, the film Flee makes a treatment of passing brushstrokes for each of the problems and allows the audience to make their own decisions, according to the references we have.

Now, I will dwell on the situation of seeing the film as a documentary. At first I found it extremely difficult to accept this film in this genre. I thought, it can be placed as "based on real events" since the documentary itself has very specific characteristics.

Then I asked myself: "Why not? How to make a documentary in the middle of a war? How to be with the protagonist in the flight and on the routes of human traffickers? How to record the barbarism and not die trying?

Anyway, I have spent several nights thinking about this topic. I think it is a documentary. There is a story that is reconstructed through a voice. There is a true experience or a survival of a citizen that manages to be an echo, perhaps a hint, of what really happens. So, making the film with flesh and blood actors, with the corresponding film permits, with the ideal cameras and shots would not have generated the heartbreaking sensation I felt when I saw the charcoal drawings.

It is a masterfully narrated documentary in animation to understand the heart of Amin, and the contrasts of the new Odysseys.

Possibly, if this film had been made in the traditional way, reconstructing scenes on a set (okay, totally valid), or making a proper documentary, it would have missed out on the poetic beauty that can emerge in our suffocating world.

The story really grabbed me. It struck a chord with me and allowed me to rethink what is fact and what is fiction in cinema. To what extent cinema is positively influencing human beings, to what extent tears are sought to get a good box office or to what extent special effects or 3D will be more important than our tragic contemporary history.

The film is very well made and I recommend that you see it. It is digestible due to the fact that it is told in animation, and it is an excellent way to look at the positive aspects of the seventh art to tell about human conflicts or miseries.

He aquí mis apreciaciones.

Después, me pregunté -¿Por qué no?
