I watched this movie some years back and had even totally forgotten about it, not until I met my friend watching it yesterday, and I had to sit through it with him to watch it. It is one of those few movies you can't get tired of watching; it has a way of making you stay glued till the very end. Aside from that, it is one of those few movies that aren't action-packed but are capable of sitting you down.
The movie is titled "Miracle In Cell No. 7." I like Korean movies a lot, but this is different; it hit different. It follows the story of a man (Yong-gu) who we can say is not mentally stable; he has a daughter whom he shares a very close relationship with, and trust me, this kid loves her father so much too.
One thing led to the other and this man (Yong-gu) who's mentally disabled was accused of assaulting and murdering a young girl who he honestly was only trying to help, and like I said he's mentally disabled and for that reason he couldn't plead his case, I mean, he wasn't able to defend himself nor prove his innocence, and that was how he got the the death sentence. He was sent to prison and got locked up in cell No. 7; now, you cannot see where the title came from. Cell No. 7 happens to be one that houses very tough and hardened criminals; as you would have guessed, he wasn't welcomed. But with time, the other inmates began to realize that he was innocent.
This particular movie is one I never see coming; I didn't even know I would watch it till the end, and, like, it's not your regular kind of movie; it is so different and beautiful in its own way, and I love it that way. I don't think anyone would watch this movie and not feel emotional; I doubt it. So far you're human; you will definitely feel something. I felt much more than something, that's to tell you how hitting of a movie it is.
Yong-gu throughout the movie acted like a child; yeah, it was obvious he had mental problems. Even still, the love he has for his daughter (Ye-seung) is out of this world. He could do and would do anything for her. I love the way he cared for her, showed her love, played with her, and did everything to make her happy. He's the real definition of a father.
I'm not exaggerating if I give Ryu Seung, who acted as Yong-gu 99/100; the guy is too good. I would have loved to give him a 100/100, but then, 99 is no different too; the guy killed that character. Not only that, but I mean, he wore the character as if it were him. Especially when he got accused of murder, I can't just help but feel for him; he couldn't even express himself. They didn't even allow him to; I guess they felt since he's mentally disabled, he just could have done it.
Now, the prison part, I felt bad for him, you know, having to see him thrown in together with real hardened criminals, but I'm glad that they eventually showed him the human side of them that those outside refuse to show to him. They became family to him, and I was even more glad when they found ways to bring in his daughter to see him too. What a great reunion it was.
Ye-seung deserves her flowers too; she was just too good. What a loving daughter she was. She never acted off or saw her dad as someone who's not capable or completely complete. Even when her father was arrested, she knew her father wasn't guilty; she knew what her father could do, but because of his disability, people were able to easily manipulate him, tag him as guilty, and make him pay the price for something he didn't do.
Like I said earlier, this movie got the best part of me. I was finished emotionally; it gripped me and had me glued to the end.
Miracle in Cell No. 7 is more than a movie.
