I've been hearing about this movie for a while now, and each and every person keeps telling me how that they've watched it and it would be best for me to give it a watch too. You know, I felt bad, the reason being that I'm not the type to feel backward, especially when it comes to Korean movies. I'm always in the forefront knowing each and every movie.
Another thing that interested me when I heard about it was the fact that it isn't a modern-day movie. I love watching Korean movies that aren't modern-day ones. Not as if I don't watch the modern-day one too, though; I just love one over the other. I just love palace settings, how they usually greet their king, how that there will always be someone who's amongst his chiefs but also against him and all of that.
Back to this movie, it is titled "The East Palace." What a profound title! What is the East Palace about? Was it where the king is staying? Is there a history with that part of the palace? What East Palace?
You see, these and more are the questions I ask myself too before finally watching it. And I can tell you in all honesty that this movie is a very dark, strange, mysterious, and different one. It is not your regular kind of movie. It is one filled with dark stuff, deaths, bloodshed, and even contention for power.
I love Gu-cheon as a character. The guy killed the role and did very well as the face of the movie. He's the type of person who takes things very seriously, the type who would say, "I'm not concerned" but still get up to go do something. He's the very stubborn, funny, and somehow type. Not only that, but he also happens to be living together with a monk, but when strange things began to happen in the palace, the king had to go to the monk and ask for help. Well, the monk, being very old already, told the king he can't handle such a task at his age but somehow convinced him that there's someone else who can, and that is where Gu-cheon came in. He didn't want to follow the king; he didn't want to do what he'd been asked to, but then he was later forcefully taken along.
Gu-cheon happens to also be a very weird type; he also has the ability to see spirits and move from the normal human realm to the realm of the spirit as well. And upon entering the palace, he was paired with Saeng-gang, who also happens to be the king's not-so-accepted daughter. She was cast away because she also had the ability to hear spirits, which they termed to be bad for a princess. So, when Gu-cheon arrived, they brought the girl into the palace too and paired her with him so they could do the job together and wipe out every spirit killing the royal bloodline.
I actually like her though; she did justice to her role too. And even though they didn't like each other at first, slowly they began to trust and care for each other, knowing fully well that at the end of the day, they only had each other.
Now, let's talk about this spirit world. Omo, even though I'm not the type to be scared when watching these kinds of movies, I felt goosebumps on my skin sometimes. Seeing how creepy, weird, and strange some of the creatures are. I love how they're able to perfectly make the spirit realm a different kind of world on its own, one that you can still have access to and control things in from the normal world.
At a point, I was confused. The palace was just filled with too many secrets and too many old grudges from spirits, and I kept wondering which spirit exactly or who exactly is in charge of these things. At a point Gu-cheon even lost his sight, even though I knew then that somehow he would regain it or something would just happen. Even though it was just eight episodes, I really enjoyed watching it, and I wouldn't mind if another episode or season comes out because I don't really like how the movie ended with not so much closure between Gu-cheon and Saeng-gang.
I enjoyed watching The East Palace. A dark, mysterious, strange, horror-kind of movie.
