The Killing of a Sacred Deer (Film): Review.

Review by @martinmcfly · 2683d · of The Killing of a Sacred Deer

I really wanted to see something entertaining today, but it was not so, instead, I found something intriguing, or at least it was the first hour, then it just became a show with which I was not at all satisfied. If you want to know why keeps reading.

Year: 2017 Category: Psychological Thriller. Director: Yorgos Lanthimos. Cast: Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan, Raffey Cassidy, Sunny Suljic, Alicia Silverstone, Bill Camp.

Plot

The film follows a cardiac surgeon who secretly befriends a teenager with a connection to his past, not knowing all that is about to trigger that relationship.

Opinion

I can not talk about anything that happens in the film without making a kind of spoiler or without mentioning something that alters the perception that would have the viewer in the first minutes of the film, for the same reason I recommend not see the trailer to those who want finally watch the movie. However, I will talk about the characteristics of the film and about my personal appreciations of everything that is seen on the screen throughout the entire film.

At the beginning, the only thing we see is a strange, intriguing, and rather suspicious friendly relationship between a surgeon and a 16-year-old, and because the nature of this relationship is known very slowly, the viewer remains almost totally confused during the first hour of the film, confused but also intrigued, because the film instigates the viewer to want to know the answer to all the questions that the plot raises in that first hour.

After the first hour of the film, we discover what the whole matter is about, however, I can not say that someone will be satisfied with what happens in the next hour of the film, which personally seems to me quite a nonsense. In a way the film reminded me of Borgman, whoever has seen both films will know why I say it.

It seems to me that the direction work has some strengths and some weaknesses, and the script seems a disaster, although if the objective of the film was simply to inconvenience the audience, like Funny Games, then it succeeds and the wrong one would be me.

The performances on the other hand were very good, the best of the film, but only during the first hour, then, it lost a lot, because the events that occur in the plot alter the perception of the whole story and excessively condition the characters.

In conclusion, I personally did not like the movie, it seemed completely meaningless, even so I think I will not forget it for a long time, it is one of those movies where nothing makes sense to me, and for that reason when I finish seeing it, then I do not know what I've seen.

Trailer

Score

5/10

Regular film, I do not recommend it, however, if you are from Canada or India you can find it in the Netflix catalog at the time of publishing this review.

I saw the trailer a while ago and it felt like a poor amateurish attempt at something great. It seems I somehow got the tight kind of vibes. The Lobster (2015) was a nice movie. As for something that is great yet difficult to understand I'd recommend Angel's Egg (1985) which is from Mamoru Oshii who mad the Ghost in the Shell (1995) in 10 months!

The Wailing (2016) is another gem like that. You might need to learn a few bits about Korean culture and Christianity to fully understand the movie (along with a little bit about the Japanese "Oni")
