The title is as suggestive as The Killing of a Sacred Deer, and the poster also has the names of Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell, who you will probably know as long as you don't know Yorgos Lanthimos, known for directing psychological thrillers, black comedies and horror films.

This is not a commercial film. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is an independent film, a Greek tragedy, Haneke's cousin, influenced by Buñuel and Kubrick.

Anyone familiar with the director's work on such gems as "Canine" or "Lobster" will not be disappointed. Lanthimos continues to give us no answers. This is a sober, cold, poetic, symbolic, harsh and powerful film like no other.

It is impossible to leave the cinema without being shocked. Moreover, once the film grabs you, it doesn't let go until the end.

There is a hypnotic beauty in the brutality we witness, in which Greek mythology plays an important role.

For the audience, the fate imposed by the "gods" is a complex answer, whoever accepts it as valid should be prepared for the curve ahead, whoever does not, will spend the rest of the film searching in vain for a logical answer, as it only makes sense within the world of Greek mythology.

I always recommend Yorgos Lanthimos. Because it irritates us, annoys us, hurts us, slaps us enough to open our eyes again and expand our minds. This is always good.

The film was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or in the main competition section of the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Today I bring a recommendation for those who are capable of chewing ice, for those people who bite into ice cream, because it is not something so easy to witness.

In this film what we see is a rather complex situation and speaking from my personal experience, it brings up many emotions and sensations, I myself felt chills, even anxiety, restlessness.

    Picsart_23-05-28_21-48-32-062.jpg Imagen created with PicsArt

To begin with, it is a film by Yorgos Lanthimos so we are not going to use reason, we only play a role in this film and that is to observe, we are not going to look for logic, so just hold on to your seat.

Do you know the Greek tragedy of Iphigenia? In fact, it's mentioned in the movie, well, it's an inspiration and even though everything is so "metaphorical" we can understand it after only 30 minutes of watching the movie.

The first scene is not something easy to see, at least not for me since we see an open heart surgery, I hope I'm right and this is the way to say it, at the beginning that we are advancing in the first part of the movie that scene doesn't seem to make sense to be there but we should never judge the movie or the path it will take. I tell you that this movie revolves around Steven who is a Doctor, his family and Martin.

Martin is a young man who recently lost his father, I'm not sure I think in the movie it's been 6 months since the loss of his father, he's also a young man who seems to have psychological problems, we don't know how it happened but this young man and Dr. Steven seems to have a close relationship, at first it seemed strange to me in the movie because Martin demanded too much attention from Dr. Steven but then at some point it becomes clear that it was like some kind of fatherly relationship, but really these close-up scenes between these two I find it somewhat uncomfortable to watch and I think that is also the intention of the film, that you are always feeling something.

We see that Dr. Steven's life seems to be all in its right place, until Martin starts demanding and demanding and demand a lot of attention and we see him very frustrated by it.

And while all this is happening, one of Dr Steven's relatives suddenly gets sick, yes, suddenly and from then on, Dr Steven's life only goes downhill, and we see all his emotions, we see that he is a person who is not capable of being rational and we even see his lack of responsibility, frustrations..

The interesting thing is to see what happens after this, everything is so stressful, uncomfortable, not easy to watch, it makes us shudder, and the worst thing is actually the end because everything escalated to a scene that I couldn't even imagine, it was quite stressful to watch but at the same time you have to admit that this movie really was a great job.

In the end I didn't tell much of what happens in the movie because it's really not something you should ruin by telling it, it's better to see it.

    ENG.png

King Agamemnon, hero of Troy and one of the characters in The Iliad, had the unfortunate idea of hunting a deer consecrated to the goddess of the forest, Artemis. Artemis, seeing what had happened to her deer, unleashed her wrath on the mythical warrior, punishing his people with great plagues and his ships without wind. Tired of this nonsense, the King decided to consult the wise men of his kingdom. Among them was a man named Calcan, to whom Agamemnon rebuked him about some way to appease the wrath of Artemis and repair the damage caused.

The augur (as they called the priests of divination), prophesied a harsh reality to the king: to appease the wrath of the goddess, he had to offer in sacrifice his beautiful daughter Iphigenia. At first, Agamemnon, refrained from committing such an abomination, but in view of the dire fate that awaited his entire family, he finally agreed to commit the sacrifice. Such a Greek epic is terrifying, but what if I tell you that a Greek director was inspired by this tragedy written 2400 years ago by Euripides, to create a film?

Yorgos Lanthimos, is a rather presumptuous director who plays with the idea of recreating old, but well-known human tragedies, adapted to modern times. The Killing of a Sacred Deer, for example, is inspired by this epic, but being quite the opposite at the same time. Loaded with a deep look inside human misery, it manages to capture the viewer with every second, without even explaining whatever is happening on screen.

The story of this film is simple, Martin (Barry Keoghan) is orphaned, due to what we presume is medical malpractice, by his dad's cardiologist Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell). This leads Steven to become a sort of guardian for this guilt-ridden boy, who from the outset we see as anxious and with serious psychopathic signs. Steven gradually brings Martin into his life, even opening the doors to his home with his wife Anna Murphy (Nicole Kidman) and children Kim (Raffey Cassidy) and Bob (Sunny Suljic).

Then each of his family members falls ill with no apparent explanation, so Steven, who is a doctor and thinks he knows it all, tries to find answers in science, but, surprise, Martin appears on the scene and tells him that, for killing his parent, he must sacrifice a member of his family, otherwise he will witness the death of his loved ones. The tension is in crescendo and as the minutes pass, it transcends the screen, life and death are connected to a single solution.

It is there where a real maelstrom begins for the viewer, because here one does not know who is who. Suddenly we see how Anna, instead of seeking help from the police, berates her husband ad nauseam, because of course, there are appearances to keep up and for nothing in the world can they lose the status they have in society. On the other hand, we have Steven, a man playing god, who decides who lives and who does not. An unhinged drunk trying to be perfect, in the midst of imperfection.

But, if you are a god, only another god can judge you. And here we have Martin, a terrifying character who plays very well his role as an unhinged guy, who for some reason uses the women around him at his whim. In some cases, it would seem that the girls worship him as a god, even above their own interests. This "spell" has no effect on the men, in fact, Bob, the youngest boy in the family, suffers the most.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer 1

    ts.png

Bob is the only one who manages to develop a physical paralysis. The origin of this is uncertain, but sometimes God's designs are inscrutable, that is why, although Steven looks for answers in men to understand what is happening to his family, no one can help him. His daughter Kim lives a kind of furtive romance with the executioner of his family and that leads me into a myriad of conspiracy theories with this character, was she an ally of Martin?

Each character suffers from a kind of paralysis, Anna suffers from emotional paralysis, she is a cold woman with no apparent feelings, Kim has psychological paralysis and can only walk when Martin orders her to. And Bob stops walking. Of course, it makes sense that the women in this story would have ingratiated themselves with Martin, even knowing that one of their family members was going to die.

Frivolity and materialism play a leading role in this film, as Steven speaks with arrogance and arrogance, while his children die. Anna only cares about appearances and her daughter, Kim, fights for an MP3 player with her brother on the verge of death. If this isn't social criticism, then what is? Martin living in a suburb while Steven's family lives in a great neighborhood, feigning perfection.

The Killing of a Sacred Deer 2

    ts.png

The psychological terror that Yorgos Lanthimos handles, is ruthless, but also becomes presumptuous. This director seems to enjoy the uncertainty that his script generates in the audience. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a clear example of that. And I know, I know that they don't have to explain anything to us in a film, but I also feel that many directors forget that the films they make must also connect with the masses, who are the ones who in the end decide whether or not to consume the content they make.

However, I must admit, I was pleased. This film is a frightening experience to say the least, and one with a deeply symbolic meaning. From minute one you realize that things are only going to get worse with each passing second, becoming unsettling at times, but with a moderate pace, which explodes and gives us the best tension at the climax. Thanks also to an incredible cast, quite committed to all their roles.

One of the most disturbing films in the HBO Max catalog and a hidden gem, which many may have already seen, but if you are among those who, like me, had no idea about this film, then I invite you to take a look at it. Especially if you like movies where the characters are devoid of emotion and the photography only conveys emptiness, you will enjoy it!

    Tooth for tooth

    img_3963.jpg source.
Once in a while in the general mainstream he invents cinema full of metaphors, full of references and giving the viewer moments of self-reflection. The filmmaker Yorgos Lanhimos is a peculiar director in his films, he often shows the downfall of people, although to a large extent his films are heavy and full of pain, he always tries to show how the characters got to this state. His first and probably most famous work is Kiel, a strongly depressive, slightly surrealistic work about escaping to a better world (away from home) However, today I will deal with his next film, which is already made in English in the USA. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a film full of metaphors, which even feeds on the viewer, although it is not as strong and blunt as Kiel, the filmmaker took it upon himself to show the viewer more of a social and emotional dilemma.

    img_3964.png source.
Studio A24 proves once again that they can put up the money for a great film project. It's hard for me to say that it's the first time I've seen Colin Forrell in a good role, he's not showing off his pretty face, he's trying to explore his character's depth and something more than just being Colin. Each of the actors in the film plays very convincingly, the director leads the actors by the hand to create a polished story in this madness. The story itself is great and touches each of us to some degree.

The film begins with a very cheerful introduction of the characters Steven Murphy is a well-known and respected cardiac surgeon with a loving wife and two children. He leads a utopian life full of love and culture. He has a friend, a young boy Martin, whom he helps, and Martin, also very cultured, always tries to return the friendship. One day the doctor's son suddenly loses the feeling in his legs, and this begins to affect not only the family, but also his friendship with Martin, who knows more than the doctor himself. The film is an allegory of the famous we said an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, where one character has to make a certain choice to redeem themselves for what they have done in the past. The film also features the now forgotten 90's star Alicia Silverstone, who plays Martin's mother and is very convincing in her short role. However, the biggest applause should be given to young Barry Keoghan, who plays Martin, his specific facial expressions hypnotize the viewer, who doesn't know which line to take.

    img_3965.jpg source.
On the plus side, the camera work in the hospital sequences is quite interesting, namely each scene has a camera which rides in front of or behind the characters giving the feeling of a "patient". Despite the fact that it is a thriller, we will not see any gruesome scenes here, everything is based on building the right atmosphere and exposing the characters. The finale is surprising, though in a way it reminded me of Funny Games, of course there is no typical breaking of the fourth wall here, but the madness is similar and the tone is similar. We expect what is about to happen, even though we know it is something terrible.

The director even feeds us with this, seeing us as no murdering individuals, although unfortunately he is right. I recommend the film, of course many metaphors will be discovered by yourself at the beginning of the film, while others will have a solution in the finale. The film is heavy, I have to admit, closer to a Greek tragedy than the usual American film.

The slow building of the atmosphere and the transformation of the characters are the greatest assets of this work. Martin's character is crucial here because we can interpret him in many ways and in a way any of them will be good. It's a character that brings a lot into characters' lives and has one goal. I recommend watching it and thinking how you would feel if you were in the same situation. 8/10

Wiedzie wręcz utopijne życie pełne miłości i kultury.

    Plot

Steven Murphy is an esteemed heart surgeon, that meets with a young man named Martin, after an open heart operation. The boy is a school friend of his daughter, Kim. Steven tells his wife that Martin's father was one of his patients, and died during a car accident ten years earlier, and so he has decided to take the boy under his wing to help him grieve. Martin goes to Murphy's house for dinner and here he meets the wife and his school friend Kim, who seems particularly attracted to him.

After some time, the members of the Steven Family start to have an inexplicable disease, to which no doctor (including the surgeon itself) can find a real explanation.

This is how far I will go with the plot since I don't want to spoiler the movie too much.

    Why you should watch it

    Mainly because:
    • in my humble opinion, it is one of the best horror films of the last decade, especially in its being an anti-horror ... ok maybe this sentence will not seem very clear to you 😅, but what I mean is that compared to horror classics, here we do not have any kind of preparation or theatricality in the various scenes, everything is told to the viewer as it is, raw and real, like life itself... and it is precisely this that makes it, even more, scary than many other horror movies... it is frightening and disturbing in its being so real ...

    • The cast is made up of both excellent actors, like Dr. Steven played by Colin Farrel and his wife played by Nicole Kidman, and also unknown ones, like the actor who plays Martin, Barry Keoghan, which is truly extraordinary in his part. He knows how to be involuntarily disturbing, making the viewer extremely uncomfortable with his actions. This is mainly due to the fact that he seems to be the main cause of the ills that befall the Murphy family.

    • In the end, the film does not give a real solution to the problem, this is, even more, a real representation of how life is nonsense, something completely random over which we have absolutely no control. The film can also be very introspective, it puts you in the role of the protagonist and makes you understand how difficult the situation is for him to manage, causing the viewer a complete discomfort, given by the complete velleities of our actions. In my opinion, this film finds meaning in the pessimistic vision of the world because there are uncontrollable and random forces that we cannot oppose, thus making us powerless and insignificant creatures compared to the forces of nature.

    • it is the filmed representation of DEATH or even of life itself. it is a film in which there is no background music, there are no pauses or jumpscare, hich make it very original and different from classic horror movies.

    • The film has many quotations, both on a literary level, linked to Nordic mythology and Christian theology, as well as elements from other horror films, such as The Shining for example, and Kubrik's Geometry.

    Rating

My personal vote, comparing it with other horror movies (and so not on a scale that takes into account also other movie genres), is:

    9/10

  7. The Killing of a sacred Deer: "pure" Lanthimos@serialfiller2176d

    image.png

We met him above all thanks to the success of La Favorita , consecrated with many nominations for the 2019 Oscars. But before the great success, Yorgos Lanthimos had built a reputation as a visionary author in the whole environment. They were films like Lobster and Sacrifice of the Sacred Deer that brought it to the attention of critics and part of the public. The latter in particular appeared to be strongly divisive. There are those who hated him and those who loved him. Usually behind these strong divisions there is always a strongly authorial, highly personal cinema. This is the case of the works of the Greek director who seem to be built specifically to create debate. Difficult to understand and even more complex, they are well identified with the so-called auteur cinema which year after year is becoming more and more of a niche.

Quest'ultimo in particolare è apparso fortemente divisivo.

Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrel are the two protagonists of this surreal film. He is a surgeon with alcohol problems behind him, she is an ophthalmologist who divides her time between her profession and her husband and 2 teenage children. A family apparently quiet, almost perfect. Breakfast and dinner celebrated together. Plants to water. Things to attend to. Passions to share. But the pater familias hides a secret. A secret that you have the face of Martin, a young boy left fatherless years before. From this relationship, apparently healthy and attributable to a father-son relationship, the great plot twist of the entire film will be born. What will be left of this film? A solid and very personal direction. Lanthimos' backsides, his slow camera movements. The constant anguish that drags along the entire second part of the film. More broadly, we could see the attempt to redefine the canons of horror by widening the perspective towards the contemporary cinematographic horizon. A non-horror film, not admittedly horror but that preserves it if not the form the substance. The growing anguish we were talking about earlier. The sense of affliction. The fear of not being able to emerge unscathed from the situation shown on the screen. The intimate, human horror of seeing the protagonists forced to dehumanize in order to save themselves. Salvation as the ultimate goal to be conquered through the definitive loss of one's humanity and purity. On this the sacrifice of the sacred deer turns out to be a great film, to remember. Not easily digestible and of little entertainment but in its own way a film that tries to be unique and original.

Una famiglia all'apparenza tranquilla, quasi perfetta. Colazione e cena celebrate insieme.

I really wanted to see something entertaining today, but it was not so, instead, I found something intriguing, or at least it was the first hour, then it just became a show with which I was not at all satisfied. If you want to know why keeps reading.

Year: 2017 Category: Psychological Thriller. Director: Yorgos Lanthimos. Cast: Colin Farrell, Nicole Kidman, Barry Keoghan, Raffey Cassidy, Sunny Suljic, Alicia Silverstone, Bill Camp.

    Plot

The film follows a cardiac surgeon who secretly befriends a teenager with a connection to his past, not knowing all that is about to trigger that relationship.

    Opinion

I can not talk about anything that happens in the film without making a kind of spoiler or without mentioning something that alters the perception that would have the viewer in the first minutes of the film, for the same reason I recommend not see the trailer to those who want finally watch the movie. However, I will talk about the characteristics of the film and about my personal appreciations of everything that is seen on the screen throughout the entire film.

At the beginning, the only thing we see is a strange, intriguing, and rather suspicious friendly relationship between a surgeon and a 16-year-old, and because the nature of this relationship is known very slowly, the viewer remains almost totally confused during the first hour of the film, confused but also intrigued, because the film instigates the viewer to want to know the answer to all the questions that the plot raises in that first hour.

After the first hour of the film, we discover what the whole matter is about, however, I can not say that someone will be satisfied with what happens in the next hour of the film, which personally seems to me quite a nonsense. In a way the film reminded me of Borgman, whoever has seen both films will know why I say it.

It seems to me that the direction work has some strengths and some weaknesses, and the script seems a disaster, although if the objective of the film was simply to inconvenience the audience, like Funny Games, then it succeeds and the wrong one would be me.

The performances on the other hand were very good, the best of the film, but only during the first hour, then, it lost a lot, because the events that occur in the plot alter the perception of the whole story and excessively condition the characters.

In conclusion, I personally did not like the movie, it seemed completely meaningless, even so I think I will not forget it for a long time, it is one of those movies where nothing makes sense to me, and for that reason when I finish seeing it, then I do not know what I've seen.

Regular film, I do not recommend it, however, if you are from Canada or India you can find it in the Netflix catalog at the time of publishing this review.

  10. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (film): Well now, that was creepy.@gooddream2804d

This movie was a shocker to me. I believe it is not very often that a movie is released and there doesn't appear to be much of a money-making agenda to it. The film is made and released because the actors / directors / producers want to make something that is GOOD and perhaps a bit different. I think that is what we are dealing with here with The Killing of a Sacred Deer.

    A1s32PgR5XL.RI.jpg

For one thing, i will never be able to look at Barry Keoghan the same again. I don't know if it is his acting or the script, or his look, or a combination of the three, but he is terrifying in this.

I am going to be intentionally vague in this writeup because I think that if you appreciate something that is both dark and a little bit different, you are in for a treat with this movie and that can easily be spoiled by me choosing the wrong words.

    sacred-deer_trans_NvBQzQNjv4BqLH_H0c60Zp7OflESAbu_VFZEOkD7JOC3Ftx3eipJ55o.jpg

Colin Farrell plays Stephen Murphy who is a very successful surgeon who has decided to take a special interest in a young boy named Martin (Barry Keoghan) in helping him grieve the passing of his father. At first Martin seems like a good kid and their relationship seems innocent enough. However, very quickly Martin's attitude starts to become more and more obsessive and Dr. Stephen starts to ignore his calls and visits.

    the-killing-of-a-sacred-deer-2017.jpg

This doesn't sit well with Martin and well, he calmly explains that bad things are going to start happening to Dr Stephen's family... and indeed they do.

And that is where i MUST leave it for the sake of not ruining stuff. I will say this: If you don't have the patience to wait for a film to get going then this will likely not do it for you because it DOES take a while for it to get moving. However, if you appreciate a good mind F**K, that is definitely what this movie is in spades.

This trailer is perfect because it reveals almost nothing about the plot. I nearly turned this movie off because it took a bit longer than I like to "get to it." However, much like finishing reading "The LIfe of Pi," the wait ended up being worth it.

  11. Killing of the Sacred Deer - Movie Review@coldsteem3150d

    killing.jpg

Killing of the Sacred Deer is the latest film from Greek Director Yorgos Lanthimos. My first exposure to Lanthimos was his debut film Dogtooth, which was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars a few years back. I have to admit, I was not impressed with that film. I later saw his film The Lobster (which also starred Colin Farrell) and kind of connected. I liked that film, which was more dystopian than Killing of the Sacred Deer but equally bizarre. The title of this film suggests a connection to the Greek mythology of Agamemnon, a king who accidentally kills a sacred deer that belongs to Artemis. As atonement, Agamemnon is forced to make a human sacrifice. The connection is not direct, but does seem to be the inspiration for this film.

    killing2.jpg

Steven Murphy (Farrell) is a surgeon. He appears to live a fairytale life. His wife, Anna (Nicole Kidman), is also a doctor. They live in the suburbs in what appears to be Cincinnati, Ohio. They have a large house, two beautiful children, nice cars and an active social life. Murphy has an odd relationship with a young man, Martin (Barry Keoghan), although it is not clear what the nature of their relationship might be. As the story progresses, Murphy is face with life-altering decisions involving his children, Kim (Raffey Cassidy) and Bob (Sunny Suljic), who appear to be suffering from some sort of disorder. The situation tests the family dynamics and exposes cracks in family unity.

    killing3.jpeg

Anyone who knows anything about Lanthimos' films will probably guess that this is not a happy ending film. It is typical for the other films I have seen from this Director. They have a really strange flavor that is not going to satisfy the average movie goer. His films delve into dark subject matter and test psychological barriers. The characters are often hard to like. The dialogue is choppy but muted. An odd combination that give the characters a detached emotional connection. Without connecting to characters makes liking a film far more difficult. Yet Lanthimos has an odd ability in his methodology to draw us in. It is a weird combination of elements. I was engaged by the film itself, even though the characters were cold and aloof. The narrative arc has a definitive climax that is as shocking as it is unsatisfying. It was a tough pill to swallow. Which severely affected my thoughts about the film.

    killing4.jpg

Keoghan was in the recent film Dunkirk. He was okay in that film, but this one sets him apart. His performance was exceptional. As aggravating and detached as these characters are, Keoghan delivered something special here. Farrell and Kidman were rock solid, as were their film children, Cassidy and Suljic. The cast was believable. The performances, within the framework of muted dialogue, managed to keep the story on track and maintain my engagement. I think Farrell's exceptional performance in The Lobster made him a great choice for the lead in this film. I liked that actors in spite of the odd delivery.

    killing5.jpg

Killing of the Sacred Deer has excessive sexual content. It is an underlying theme throughout the film. The sexual content is frequent, bizarre and gratuitous at times. Sexual content is prevalent both in terms of nudity, underage sexuality and sexual acts depicted. This is definitely not a film for young viewers. Aside from the rampant sexuality, the film is brutally violent with a moderate gore factor. Not slasher gore, but it does have disturbing violence. The thematic material in the film has a violent undertone woven into the story. The subject matter made this film an easy R rating for the MPAA. I thought the sexual content was overdone.

    killing6.jpg

I liked Killing of the Sacred Deer better than Dogtooth but not as well as I liked The Lobster. The latter made more sense to me, even with its unique strangeness and open ending. This film had a closed ending (although not necessarily satisfying) but there were also a lot of loose ends for me. There were aspects of the story that were not neatly explained or tied together. I was left feeling like I missed a lot. In fact, this is one of those films that you might understand better with a second pass. But the slow pacing and odd dialogue are too much for me. I think I will leave it to the experts out there to tie things together. I am satisfied to view this movie as worthwhile for anyone who likes dark, bizarre films. I can enjoy films like that, but this one fell just a bit short for me. I would recommend it streaming. 7/10.
