[ESP] | [ENG] — 7 hermanas bajo una misma identidad: "¿Qué le pasó a Lunes?" (reseña).

Hay que aceptar que la plataforma de streaming Netflix tiene en su repertorio series originales bastante buenas con tramas interesantes, un buen guión, actuaciones de gran nivel. La verdad es que han sido pocas las series originales de esta plataforma que me han defraudado, pero lamentablemente no puedo decir lo mismo en cuanto a sus películas. Creo que muchos de nosotros estamos bastante conscientes de que películas malas originales de Netflix, no faltan. Puede que sea yo quien no sabe escoger bien lo que pretendo consumir dentro de esa plataforma, pero ya me ha pasado en varias ocasiones que no logro soportar tanta tortura y termino dejando la película seleccionada casi a la mitad. Claro está que hay excepciones, como “El irlandés” de Martin Scorsese, por ejemplo, que han demostrado que sí hay espacio para películas de calidad dentro de esta plataforma.

Hace semanas tenía ganas de ver una película de acción. Una película que simplemente cumpliera con el fin de entretenerme y mantenerme alerta con algunas cuentas escenas de pelea. Porque sí, la realidad es que soy de ese tipo de chicas que prefiere este tipo de películas en lugar de películas románticas. Mientras buscaba en el catálogo alguna película que cumpliera con estos requisitos, fue un solo título el que terminó despertando mi curiosidad: "¿Qué le pasó a Lunes?" No es que esta sea la película del año, ni la mejor película de todo Netflix, pero sí puedo decirles que me gustó y no me pareció tan terrible como otras películas originales de la ya mencionada plataforma. Entonces, en vista de que la película me ha agradado pensé que podía ser merecedora de una reseña en mi Blog…así que, ¡aquí vamos!

We must accept that the Netflix streaming platform has in its repertoire quite good original series with interesting plots, a good script, high level performances. The truth is that there have been few original series from this platform that have let me down, but unfortunately I can't say the same when it comes to their movies. I think many of us are quite aware that bad Netflix original movies, there is no shortage. It may be me who does not know how to choose well what I intend to consume within that platform, but it has already happened to me on several occasions that I can not stand so much torture and end up leaving the selected movie almost halfway through. Of course, there are exceptions, such as "The Irishman" by Martin Scorsese, for example, which have shown that there is room for quality films on this platform.

I've been looking forward to an action movie for weeks now. A movie that simply fulfilled the purpose of entertaining me and keeping me on my toes with some fight scenes. Because yes, the reality is that I'm that kind of girl who prefers this kind of movies instead of romantic movies. While I was searching the catalog for some movie that met these requirements, it was a single title that ended up arousing my curiosity: "What happened to Monday?" Not that this is the movie of the year, nor the best movie in all of Netflix, but I can tell you that I liked it and I didn't find it as terrible as other original movies from the aforementioned platform. So, in view of the fact that I liked the movie I thought it could be worthy of a review in my Blog...so, here we go!

¿Qué le pasó a Lunes? es una película de acción y suspenso del año 2017 protagonizada por Noomi Rapace a quien podremos recordar por su interpretación de Lisbeth Salander en las adaptaciones suecas de la saga Millennium. También cuenta con las actuaciones de Willem Dafoe y la maravillosa Glenn Close. En esta película se nos plantea un mundo futurista devastado por la hambruna y la sobrepoblación y en donde se ha implementado una estricta política del único hijo regulada por la Ley de Asignación Filial, como única solución para intentar solventar la crisis que aqueja a la humanidad. Los ciudadanos viven bajo un estricto régimen donde cada uno posee un brazalete electrónico que lo identifica y que, además, afirma que es hijo único. Evidentemente hay personas que incumplen con la Ley y terminan pagando un alto precio: sólo podrá mantener a uno de sus hijos a su lado. En este mundo distópico, cuando una madre da a luz a más de un niño, todos menos el primogénito son llevados a cápsulas criogénicas con la promesa de que, al superar la crisis mundial, sus hijos serán descongelados y podrán vivir con total normalidad.

En medio de esta realidad Karen Settman muere dando a luz a septillizas, por lo que el abuelo de estas niñas, Terrence (interpretrado por Willem Dafoe), las cuida con su vida y termina nombrando a cada una de ellas como a cada uno de los días de la semana. Digamos que para guardar el secreto, Terrence “educa” a sus siete nietas, él les permite desarrollar a cada una su propia personalidad mientras estén dentro de la seguridad de su hogar, pero siempre les deja en claro que al salir al mundo exterior todas tendrán la misma identidad: se harán pasar por la misma persona la cual lleva el nombre de su difunta madre. Al cumplir los 10 años de edad llega el momento de las niñas de salir por primera vez de su hogar, pero la cosa está en que no lo harán todas a la vez sino que cada una tendrá la oportunidad de salir de casa únicamente el día de su nombre bajo la identidad de Karen Settman. Para mantener todo bajo control y no levantar sospechas, Terrence se asegura de que cada noche las niñas se reúnan y compartan a detalle cada una de las cosas que realizaron durante su día.

What Happened to Monday is a 2017 action thriller film starring Noomi Rapace who we may remember for her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander in the Swedish adaptations of the Millennium saga. It also features performances by Willem Dafoe and the wonderful Glenn Close. In this film we are presented with a futuristic world devastated by famine and overpopulation and where a strict _only child** policy regulated by the Subsidiary Allocation Law has been implemented as the only solution to try to solve the crisis afflicting humanity. Citizens live under a strict regime where each one has an electronic bracelet that identifies him/her and also states that he/she is an only child. Evidently, there are people who break the law and end up paying a high price: they can only keep one of their children by their side. In this dystopian world, when a mother gives birth to more than one child, all but the firstborn are taken to cryogenic capsules with the promise that, upon overcoming the world crisis, their children will be thawed and will be able to live with total normality.

In the midst of this reality Karen Settman dies giving birth to septuplets, so the grandfather of these girls, Terrence (played by Willem Dafoe), takes care of them with his life and ends up naming each of them after each of the days of the week. Let's say that to keep the secret, Terrence "educates" his seven granddaughters, he allows them to develop their own personalities while they are inside the safety of his home, but always makes it clear to them that when they go out into the outside world they will all have the same identity: they will pretend to be the same person who bears the name of their late mother. When they turn 10 years old, it is time for the girls to leave home for the first time, but the thing is that they will not do it all at once, but each one will have the opportunity to leave home only on the day of her name under the identity of Karen Settman. To keep everything under control and not raise suspicions, Terrence makes sure that every night the girls meet and share in detail each of the things they did during their day.

Pasan 30 años y podemos ver como cada una de las siete niñas se han transformado en mujeres con una personalidad bastante marcada y nada parecida una de otra: por un lado tenemos a una deportista, a la cerebrito, a la correcta que no es para nada correcta e incluso a una barbie. Sin embargo, su identidad en común, Karen, es una persona un tanto fría e inexpresiva que trabaja para un banco importante de la ciudad y espera un gran ascenso en su empleo. Se nos muestra la rutina que cada una debe de seguir en su correspondiente día: el día iniciará realizando un escaneo facial del rostro de la hermana a quien corresponda salir, con ello se intenta corregir cualquier defecto como ojeras, rosetones, ojos hinchados; se maquillan de la misma manera todos los días y usan la misma peluca todos los días. Resetean su brazalete electrónico y, una vez lista, la hermana correspondiente sale a vivir su día a día bajo la identidad de Karen. La rutina del día finaliza cuando, después de la cena, todas se reúnen para ponerse al corriente de lo sucesivo durante el día.

Todo marchó bien durante todos esos años hasta que un Lunes, Lunes desaparece sin dejar rastro. Las hermanas comienzan a preocuparse, pero no les queda más remedio que salir el día en que le corresponde a cada una para descubrir qué le ocurrió a su hermana Lunes. Y es ahí donde comienza la acción, las hermanas unen sus fuerzas y cada una de sus habilidades para poder sobrevivir, descubriendo entonces muchos secretos que al parecer ninguna pudo haberse imaginado antes.

Thirty years go by and we can see how each of the seven girls have transformed into women with a very distinct personality and nothing similar to each other: on the one hand we have a sportswoman, the brainy one, the correct one who is not correct at all and even a barbie. However, their common identity, Karen, is a somewhat cold and inexpressive person who works for an important bank in the city and is waiting for a big promotion in her job. We are shown the routine that each of them must follow in their corresponding day: the day will begin with a facial scan of the sister's face, trying to correct any defects such as dark circles, rosettes, puffy eyes; they apply the same make-up every day and wear the same wig every day. They reset their electronic bracelet and, once ready, the corresponding sister goes out to live her day to day life under the identity of Karen. The day's routine ends when, after dinner, they all meet to catch up on the day's events.

All went well for all those years until one Monday, Monday disappears without a trace. The sisters begin to worry, but they have no choice but to go out on their own day to find out what happened to their sister Monday. And that's where the action begins, the sisters join forces and each of their abilities to survive, then discovering many secrets that apparently none of them could have imagined before.

Comenzaré diciendo que la actriz Noomi Rapace se merece una reverencia y aplausos de pie. No quiero imaginar lo difícil que debe de ser preparar un personaje para una película, pero ¿preparar siete? ¡qué excelente actuación la de esta mujer! Es increíble cómo le puede dar vida a siete mujeres diferentes, con personalidades totalmente opuestas una de otra. Y eso me lleva al segundo punto importante: los efectos. Yo no sé mucho sobre esto y por eso me sorprende cómo es que logran ubicar a las 7 hermanas en el mismo espacio, al mismo momento sin que se vea como un montaje, todo más bien parece demasiado natural. Puede que todo esto del futuro distópico y la sobrepoblación sea un tema bastante sonado en la industria cinematográfica, pero me ha agradado cómo lo abordaron en esta oportunidad: un abuelo cuidando de sus 7 nietas, todas ellas bajo una misma identidad, ¡vaya manera de lograr sobrevivir dentro del caos!

En un punto logras comprender lo frustradas que pueden llegar a sentirse algunas de las hermanas, pues básicamente viven bajo una fachada y fingiendo ser alguien que realmente no son, sin oportunidad alguna de poder exteriorizar su verdadera personalidad, sin la oportunidad de mostrarle al mundo quien realmente son y las habilidades maravillosas que poseen, sin la oportunidad de poder tener una pareja y formar una familia. Simplemente están atadas al disfraz de Karen Settman hasta el fin de sus días, sin oportunidad de poder hacer algo más con sus vidas.

I'll start by saying that actress Noomi Rapace deserves a bow and a standing ovation. I don't want to imagine how hard it must be to prepare one character for a movie, but to prepare seven? what an excellent performance this woman gives! It's amazing how she can bring seven different women to life, with totally opposite personalities from one another. And that brings me to the second important point: the effects. I don't know much about this and that's why I'm surprised how they manage to place the 7 sisters in the same space, at the same time without it looking like a montage, everything seems too natural. Maybe all this about the dystopian future and overpopulation is a very popular topic in the film industry, but I liked how they approached it this time: a grandfather taking care of his 7 granddaughters, all of them under the same identity, what a way to survive in the chaos!

At one point you get to understand how frustrated some of the sisters can get to feel, because they basically live under a facade and pretending to be someone they are not, without any chance to show their true personality, without the opportunity to show the world who they really are and the wonderful abilities they have, without the opportunity to have a partner and start a family. They are simply tied to the disguise of Karen Settman until the end of their days, with no chance to do anything else with their lives.

La película quizás sea un poco predecible, pues desde un comienzo te das cuenta de que las hermanas ocultan secretos, pero ¿con qué fin? bueno, ese es el plot twist con el que te encontrarás al final. Por otra parte, desde un principio esperé demasiado del personaje de Nicolette Cayman, interpretado por Glenn Close, y al final de la película me terminó decepcionando un poco. Cayman era la cabecilla de la estricta ley del único hijo, básicamente ella era nuestra antagonista aquí pero realmente su personaje no fue demasiado explotado. Sí logras darte cuenta de que este personaje es malintencionado y capaz de hacer cosas terribles, pero su desarrollo no fue tan grande y sirvió más como para darle sentido a las acciones de otros personajes.

La trama en general me agradó, pero sentí que fue perdiendo un poco de fuerza hacia el final. Aunque no puedo negar que el porqué de todo quedó, de cierta manera, bien justificado y los motivos de las decisiones de cada personaje no me parecieron un desastre colosal.

The movie is perhaps a bit predictable, since from the beginning you realize that the sisters are hiding secrets, but to what end? well, that's the plot twist you'll find yourself with at the end. On the other hand, from the beginning I expected too much from the character of Nicolette Cayman, played by Glenn Close, and by the end of the movie I ended up being a bit disappointed. Cayman was the ringleader of the strict only child law, basically she was our antagonist here but really her character wasn't overly exploited. You do get to realize that this character is malicious and capable of doing terrible things, but her development wasn't that great and served more as a way to make sense of the actions of other characters.

I liked the plot overall, but I felt like it was losing a bit of steam towards the end. Although I can't deny that the why of everything was, in a way, well justified and the reasons for each character's decisions didn't seem like a colossal mess to me.

Lo reitero, esta no es la película de acción del año, pero tiene unos que otros elementos que resultan interesantes. Así que si estás buscando algo que contenga algo de acción y una linda protagonista peleando contra un gran bando de hombres armados, puede que esta película te logre entretener durante sus 2 horas y 3 minutos.

Again, this is not the action movie of the year, but it does have some interesting elements. So if you're looking for something that contains some action and a pretty leading lady fighting a large gang of gunmen, this movie might just keep you entertained for its 2 hours and 3 minutes.
