Hacía bastante rato que no pasaba por aquí a compartir mis reseñas sobre películas y series es que, verán, los últimos meses he estado bastante ocupada y a pesar de que sí he visto varias películas y series nuevas no es como hubiese tenido todo el tiempo del mundo para sentarme frente a la laptop a maquetear mis reseñas y que quedaran como tanto me gusta. El punto es que tuve una conversación muy seria conmigo misma y llegué a la conclusión de que este mes de Octubre no lo podía desaprovechar porque la verdad es que se vienen estrenos muy buenos relacionados al género del terror y a toda esta temática de Halloween.
Es así como comienzo esta serie de reseñas dedicada al mes escalofriante de todos y quiero precisamente iniciar con una película que se estrenó el pasado 30 de Septiembre y que es bastante simbólica para muchos millenials: Hocus Pocus 2 o como se le conoce en Latinoamérica ”Abracadabra 2”.

It's been a while since I've been here to share my movie and series reviews because, you see, the last few months I've been pretty busy and even though I've seen several new movies and series it's not like I had all the time in the world to sit in front of the laptop to layout my reviews and make them look the way I like them so much. The point is that I had a very serious conversation with myself and I came to the conclusion that I couldn't miss this month of October because the truth is that there are some very good releases coming up related to the horror genre and this whole Halloween theme.
That's how I start this series of reviews dedicated to the spooky month of all and I want to start with a movie that was released last September 30 and that is quite symbolic for many millenials: Hocus Pocus 2 or as it is known in Latin America "Abracadabra 2".
Como la mayoría sabrá –y para quienes no lo saben igual lo comento– esta película es la secuela de aquella que fue estrenada bajo el mismo nombre en el año 1993 y que básicamente es una comedia de terror que contaba la historia de tres hermanas brujas Winifred, Sarah y Mary Sanderson que fueron llevadas a la horca en el año 1693, pero ¡oh vaya sorpresa! una de ellas arroja un hechizo antes de morir que dicta que las tres brujas resucitarán cuando en una luna llena, en la víspera del Día de Todos los Santos, una persona virgen encienda la vela de llama negra. Trescientos años después, un chico llamado Max Denninson enciende accidentalmente la vela, trayendo de regreso a la vida a las tres hermanas brujas y es ahí donde Max, su hermanita Danni y su interés amoroso Allison inician una travesía para descubrir cómo rayos deshacerse de las hermanas.
No fue hasta el año 2014 (21 años después) en que los planes para una secuela de Hocus Pocus se pusieron en marcha, sin embargo su producción inició apenas a finales del año pasado. Esta secuela estrenada el mes pasado sigue esa misma línea que su antecesora, en el que las tres hermanas son revividas para repetirse básicamente la misma historia que ya se contó, salvo que con otros personajes, evidentemente. Veintinueve años después de los eventos ocurridos en Hocus Pocus, es una chica de secundaria llamada Becca que desata la furia de las hermanas Sanderson y que tendrá que descubrir, junto a sus amigas Izzy y Cassi, cómo detener a estas brujas rebosantes en maldad y ansiosas por devorar el alma de los niños para mantenersevivas. Pero eso no es tan lineal así como se los comento, pues en esta secuela también se nos cuenta un poco sobre la infancia del trío de hermanas brujas y cómo fue que lograron adquirir sus “dotes místicos”. Esto último, a mi parecer, le dio un aspecto más interesante a la trama pero más adelante les contaré porqué. Por otra parte, en la historia también se revelan algunas cosas curiosas entorno a otros de los personajes principales que, a mi parecer, no es que le haya aportado un valor significante al resto de la trama pero supongo que de alguna manera tenía que justificar ciertos hechos y, sobretodo, el final de la película. Obviamente, no nos puede faltar el respectivo número musical de las hermanas Sanderson que, a mi parecer, en esta oportunidad no fue tan maravilloso como el icónico "I Put A Spell On You" de la primera película, pero aún así fue todo un gusto verlas cantar de nuevo.
As most will know –and for those who don't– this movie is the sequel to the one that was released under the same name in 1993 and which is basically a horror comedy that told the story of three witch sisters Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson who were taken to the gallows in 1693, but oh what a surprise! one of them casts a spell before she died that dictates that all three witches will be resurrected when on a full moon, on the eve of All Saints' Day, a virgin lights the black flame candle. Three hundred years later, a boy named Max Denninson accidentally lights the candle, bringing the three witch sisters back to life and that's where Max, his little sister Danni and his love interest Allison begin a journey to discover how on earth to get rid of the sisters.
It wasn't until 2014 (21 years later) that plans for a sequel to Hocus Pocus got underway, however production only began late last year. This sequel released last month follows that same line as its predecessor, in which the three sisters are revived to basically repeat the same story that was already told, except with different characters, evidently. Nineteen years after the events that occurred in Hocus Pocus, it's a high school girl named Becca who unleashes the wrath of the Sanderson sisters and will have to figure out, along with her friends Izzy and Cassi, how to stop these witches brimming with evil and eager to devour the souls of children to keep themselves alive. But that's not so linear as I tell you, because in this sequel we are also told a bit about the trio's childhood and how they managed to acquire their "mystical gifts". The latter, in my opinion, gave a more interesting aspect to the plot, but I'll tell you why later on. On the other hand, the story also reveals some curious things about other of the main characters that, in my opinion, did not add significant value to the rest of the plot, but I guess it had to justify certain facts and, above all, the end of the movie. Obviously, we can't miss the respective musical number of the Sanderson sisters that, in my opinion, this time was not as wonderful as the iconic "I Put A Spell On You" from the first film, but it was still a pleasure to see them sing again.
Desde el debut de Hocus Pocus hace unas cuantas décadas, Disney terminó hechizando en estas fechas de Halloween a todos sus fieles seguidores con esta película sobre tres brujas icónicas que solo quieren absorber las vidas de niños y vivir para siempre. Y es que para nadie es mentira que esta película se posicionó de primera en la lista de películas para ver en Halloween. Yo siempre recuerdo encender la TV en estas épocas, colocar Disney Channel y encontrarme con que estaban pasando Hocus Pocus...¡es que es todo un clásico! porque no sólo se trata de película "para todo tipo de público" que tiene una canción pegajosa y divertida, realmente su concepto es bastante interesante porque toma en consideración a los Juicios por brujería en Salem que se llevaron acabo por allá en los años 1600. Evidentemente, las hermanas Sanderson son personajes ficticios, pero el trasfondo que existe en estos tres personajes posee una elevada dosis de realidad que en ningún momento tratan de evitar u ocultar. Quizás por este motivo es que se ha convertido en una de las películas sobre temática de Halloween preferida por el público joven.
De verdad, no les voy mentir al decirles que me emocioné increíblemente al enterarme de que Hocus Pocus tendría una secuela. Sin embargo, el miedo me invadió un poco porque temía que ocurriera lo mismo que ha ocurrido con muchas secuelas de franquicias famosas: que fuese un total desastre. Desde mi punto de vista no puedo calificar a Hocus Pocus 2 como un desastre colosal, sin embargo, me pareció demasiado fan service. Básicamente en la película se nos muestra lo que los fanáticos esperaban ver: las tres brujas con su número musical y siendo más graciosas que nunca, personajes irremplazables de la primera película y los típicos jóvenes que reviven a las Sanderson y luego de una noche de Halloween súper alocada, se logran deshacer de ellas.
Since the debut of Hocus Pocus a few decades ago, Disney ended up bewitching all its faithful followers with this movie about three iconic witches who only want to absorb the lives of children and live forever. And it's no lie that this movie was at the top of the list of movies to watch on Halloween. I always remember turning on the TV at this time of the year, putting on Disney Channel and finding that Hocus Pocus was on...it's a classic! because not only is it a movie "for all audiences" that has a catchy and fun song, its concept is really quite interesting because it takes into consideration the Salem Witch Trials that took place back in the 1600s. Obviously, the Sanderson sisters are fictional characters, but the background that exists in these three characters has a high dose of reality that at no time try to avoid or hide. Perhaps for this reason it has become one of the favorite Halloween-themed movies for young audiences.
Really, I'm not going to lie to you when I tell you that I was incredibly excited when I found out that Hocus Pocus would have a sequel. However, I was a little scared because I was afraid that the same thing that has happened to many sequels of famous franchises would happen: that it would be a total disaster. From my point of view I can't call Hocus Pocus 2 a colossal disaster, however, I found it too much of a fan service. Basically in the movie we are shown what fans expected to see: the three witches with their musical number and being funnier than ever, irreplaceable characters from the first movie and the typical young people who revive the Sandersons and after a super crazy Halloween night, manage to get rid of them.
Algo que me gustó mucho de la película es que incluyeron unas escenas donde se contaba la historia de las hermanas Sanderson siendo unas niñas y cómo fue que adquirieron sus "dotes místicos". Estas escenas en particular me encantaron porque en ellas actuaron tres niñas que, evidentemente, cada una represetaba a cada hermana de joven. A pesar de que yo no sé nada sobre actuación, la actuación de esas niñas me maravailló porque me transmitían una vibra diferente en comparación a los demás actores. Esa personalidad de cada hermana la lograron transmitir de una forma estupenda así que, en definitiva, me quito el sombrero ante la actuación de esas niñas personificando a las hermanas en su versión más joven.
¿Me gustó o no me gusto esta secuela? Bueno, realmente deja un poco qué desear, porque al menos a mí tanto fan service no me convenció, además de que no innovaron demasiado en la trama general (tengo que aprender a no tener expectativas tan altas con las películas y series). Particularmente, sigo prefiriendo la primera película y es más por el hecho de que en aquellos años el recurso de los efectos especiales no estaba tan desarrollado por lo que los vestuarios, maquillaje y escenografía tenían mucho más peso para generar un mayor impacto visual. Creo que todo esto era una de las cosas que también me impresionaban mucho de esta película y que, lamentablemente, con esta segunda entrega no me pareció tan impresionante.
Something I really liked about the movie is that they included some scenes where they told the story of the Sanderson sisters as children and how they acquired their "mystical gifts". I loved these scenes in particular because they featured three girls who, evidently, each played each sister as a young girl. Even though I know nothing about acting, I marveled at the performance of these girls because they gave me a different vibe compared to the other actors. That personality of each sister they managed to convey in a great way so, all in all, hats off to the performance of those girls impersonating the sisters in their younger version.
Did I like or dislike this sequel? Well, it really leaves something to be desired, because at least for me, so much fan service didn't convince me, plus they didn't innovate too much in the general plot (I have to learn not to have such high expectations with movies and series). Particularly, I still prefer the first film and it is more for the fact that in those years the resource of special effects was not so developed so the costumes, makeup and scenery had much more weight to generate a greater visual impact. I think all this was one of the things that also impressed me a lot of this film and that, unfortunately, with this second installment did not seem so impressive.
