Al parecer durante el año pasado el gigante del streaming, Netflix, exploró más de una vez con la temática de historias reales de asesinos en serie. A finales del 2022 Netflix sorprendió con una serie inspirada en la vida de Jeffrey Dahmer, uno de los asesinos seriales más conocidos en Estados Unidos, pero casi un mes después se estrenó una película que, a pesar de no tener la misma popularidad que esa serie, también pretendía abordar esta misma temática indagando en los crímenes cometidos por Charles Cullen, conocido como el Ángel de la Muerte.

Tenía esta película en mi lista desde su estreno, así que con algo de tiempo de libre me he estado ocupando de mi extensa lista de películas y series por ver. Así que, aprovechando que tengo las ideas aún claras sobre esta trama, aquí les comparto mi reseña.

It seems that during the past year the streaming giant, Netflix, explored more than once with the theme of real stories of serial killers. At the end of 2022 Netflix surprised with a series inspired by the life of Jeffrey Dahmer, one of the best known serial killers in the United States, but almost a month later a movie was released that, despite not having the same popularity as that series, also intended to address this same theme by digging into the crimes committed by Charles Cullen, known as the Angel of Death.

I had this movie on my list since its release, so with some free time on my hands I've been taking care of my extensive list of movies and series to watch. So, taking advantage of the fact that I still have some clear ideas about this plot, here is my review.

Esta película fue estrenada en Octubre del año pasado en la plataforma de streaming Netflix y está basada en el libro de no ficción titulado The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder de Charles Graeber que trata sobre los crímenes reales cometidos por Charles Cullen, un enfermero cuya secreta afición de arrebatar vidas le condujo a estar implicado en la muerte de aproximadamente 400 pacientes, repartidas entre los diferentes hospitales en donde trabajó en Estados Unidos.

La película no se encuentra narrada desde la perspectiva del asesino, sino más bien desde el punto de vista de Amy Loughren (personaje interpretado por Jessica Chastain). Loughren fue compañera de trabajo de Cullen en el hospital Parkfield de Nueva Jersey, fue aquí donde ella -en principio- se convitió en su amiga y confidente pero luego ella pasaría a ser una pieza clave para lograr desenmascararlo. A Amy se nos muestra como una gran enfermera compasiva y entregada a su trabajo, pero también se nos muestra con una madre soltera que se esfuerza para sacar adelante a sus hijas mientras que batalla en contra de una afección cardíaca potencialmente mortal.

This film was released in October of last year on the streaming platform Netflix and is based on the non-fiction book titled The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder by Charles Graeber which deals with the real crimes committed by Charles Cullen, a nurse whose secret penchant for taking lives led him to be implicated in the deaths of approximately 400 patients, spread across the different hospitals where he worked in the United States.

The film is not told from the killer's perspective, but rather from the point of view of Amy Loughren (played by Jessica Chastain). Loughren was Cullen's co-worker at Parkfield Hospital in New Jersey, it was here where she -at first- became his friend and confidant but then she would become a key piece to unmask him. Amy is shown as a great, compassionate and dedicated nurse, but she is also shown as a single mother struggling to raise her daughters while battling a life-threatening heart condition.

Debido a su condición cardiaca, Amy comienza a tener muchas limitantes tanto a nivel emocional como a nivel físico que se ven potenciados por los largos y exigentes turnos nocturnos en los que le corresponde trabajar en la unidad de cuidados intensivos. Como si de cosas de vida se tratara, Charlie Cullen, un enfermero aparentemente muy reflexivo, bondadoso y empático comienza a trabajar en la misma unidad que Amy. A medida que los dos enfermeros comparten jornadas de trabajo nocturnas, van desarrollando una gran amistad, y básicamente Amy comienza a ver a Charlie como ese apoyo emocional que tanto necesitaba para lograr lidiar con la difícil situación de salud que atravesaba.

Sin embargo, después de que comienzan a ocurrir unas cuantas muertes misteriosas en la unidad de cuidados intensivos de Parkfield, la investigación policial realizada señala a Charlie Cullen como principal sospechoso de aquellas muertes inexplicables. Este será el motivo por el cual Amy pondrá en riesgo su empleo, su salud y la seguridad de su familia para tratar de descubrir la verdad y hacer valer la justicia.

Because of her heart condition, Amy begins to have many emotional and physical limitations that are compounded by the long and demanding night shifts she has to work in the intensive care unit. As if it were a matter of life, Charlie Cullen, a seemingly very thoughtful, caring and empathetic nurse begins working in the same unit as Amy. As the two nurses share night shifts, they develop a great friendship, and Amy begins to see Charlie as the emotional support she needed to help her cope with the difficult health situation she was going through.

However, after a few mysterious deaths begin to occur in the intensive care unit of Parkfield, the police investigation points to Charlie Cullen as the main suspect of those unexplained deaths. This is why Amy will risk her job, her health and the safety of her family to try to uncover the truth and bring justice.

Debo admitir que esta película no es una obra maestra y, muy posiblemente, será de ese tipo de películas que se olviden rápidamente pero desde mi punto de vista vale la pena verla. Particularmente, suelo ser muy cuidadosa con este tipo de películas que intentan recrear desde el punto de vista dramático la historia de un asesino serial porque en muchas ocasiones ha ocurrido que, a pesar de que se trate de contar algo que ocurrió realmente, terminan por no contar lo que realmente ocurrió, entonces ¿qué sentido tiene basarse en un hecho real tan delicado si no vas a contar lo que verdaderamente sucedió? Sin embargo, hace ya algún tiempo había indagado sobre la historia de Cullen gracias a un vídeo que encontré en YouTube de una chica que se encarga de relatar este tipo de casos, por lo que puedo decir que el film (según lo que he investigado hasta el momento) sí se apega casi en su totalidad a los hechos reales y, de hecho, la misma Amy Loughren ha realizado un par de entrevistas hablando al respecto. Así que vamos bien en ese aspecto de respetar la veracidad de lo ocurrido.

A diferencia de otras historias de Netflix relacionadas a asesinos seriales, como por ejemplo la serie “Monstruo: La historia de Jeffrey Dahmer”, The Good Nurse o El Ángel de la Muerte se encuentra netamente reducida a la descripción del vínculo existente entre el criminal y la persona que logró hacer justicia...sólo eso. Me hubiese gustado que parte de la historia hubiese abarcado todos los ámbitos posibles del personaje central, pues en lo particular me llama la atención el factor psicológico, aquello que detonó y que impulsó a las personas a actuar de una determinada manera. Aunque claro, puedo entender que dos horas de película es un lapso de tiempo muy breve para incluir tantos detalles sin que el espectador se sienta abrumado por tanta información.

I must admit that this movie is not a masterpiece and, quite possibly, it will be one of those kind of movies that are quickly forgotten, but from my point of view it is worth watching. Particularly, I am usually very careful with this kind of movies that try to recreate from the dramatic point of view the story of a serial killer because in many occasions it has happened that, in spite of trying to tell something that really happened, they end up not telling what really happened, so what's the point of basing on a real fact so delicate if you are not going to tell what really happened? However, some time ago I had inquired about the Cullen story thanks to a video I found on YouTube of a girl who is in charge of recounting this kind of cases, so I can say that the film (according to what I have researched so far) does stick almost entirely to the real facts and, in fact, Amy Loughren herself has done a couple of interviews talking about it. So we're doing well on that aspect of respecting the veracity of what happened.

Unlike other Netflix stories related to serial killers, such as the series "Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story", The Good Nurse is clearly reduced to the description of the link between the criminal and the person who managed to bring justice... just that. I would have liked that part of the story would have covered all the possible areas of the central character, because I am particularly interested in the psychological factor, what triggered and drove people to act in a certain way. Of course, I can understand that two hours of film is a very short period of time to include so many details without the viewer feeling overwhelmed by so much information.

En muchas de las reseñas que leí acerca de esta cinta criticaban el uso extremo de la oscuridad en cada una de las escenas, pero a mí esto no me ha parecido un desacierto y de hecho me parece que el tono de colores fríos y la poca claridad es detalle un tanto simbólico, pues es desde la oscuridad en donde el mal se atraver a hacer de las suyas. Esa fotografía grisácea va bastante bien con ese tono de intriga de la cinta y con la personalidad escalofriante y sigilosa de Cullen, así como también con cada uno de sus gestos y miradas que te hacen pensar inmediatamente que los peores criminales se disfrazan de piel de cordero.

Por otra parte, dentro de la cinta, no sólo nos percatamos de un mal muy obvio como lo es un profesional de la salud de rostro bondadoso y angelical que, en lugar de velar por el bien de los pacientes, los conduce al final de sus vidas, sino también en esta película queda en evidencia algo igual de aterrador y peligroso: un sistema de salud deficiente que vela por su reputación y finanzas por encima de lo que es moralmente correcto y, peor aun, por encima de la seguridad y bienestar de sus pacientes. Esto de la indiferencia criminal de las instituciones de salud no es algo nuevo y, de hecho, me lleva a pensar en muchos casos que posiblemente ocurren y que nunca salen a luz, dejando a sus responsables libres y a muchas familias sin una verdadera justicia todo por el miedo que estas instituciones tienen de ser demandadas o considerados responsables y terminar perdiendo su reputación.

Many of the reviews I read about this film criticized the extreme use of darkness in each of the scenes, but to me this did not seem a mistake and in fact it seems to me that the tone of cold colors and the little clarity is a somewhat symbolic detail, because it is from the darkness where evil is attracted to do its thing. That grayish photography goes quite well with the intriguing tone of the film and with Cullen's creepy and stealthy personality, as well as with each of his gestures and looks that make you immediately think that the worst criminals are disguised in sheep's clothing.

On the other hand, within the film, not only do we become aware of a very obvious evil such as a health professional with a kind and angelic face who, instead of looking out for the good of the patients, leads them to the end of their lives, but also in this film something equally frightening and dangerous becomes evident: a deficient health system that looks out for its reputation and finances above what is morally correct and, even worse, above the safety and well-being of its patients. This criminal indifference on the part of healthcare institutions is nothing new and, in fact, leads me to think of many cases that possibly occur and never come to light, leaving those responsible free and many families without real justice all because of the fear these institutions have of being sued or held liable and end up losing their reputation.

En pocas palabras, esta película nos permite adentrarnos en la oscura historia de Charles Cullen así como también en la del negligente sistema hospitalario que la posibilitó, contrarrestando esto con la valentía y buenos valores de una persona que se atrevió a hacer lo que era correcto sabiendo que arriesgaba no sólo su bienestar, sino también el de su familia. El trabajo tanto de Eddie Redmayne en el papel criminal, como el de Jessica Chastain en el papel de una valiente enfermera, es sobresaliente considerando que dan vida a personajes con cierto nivel de complejidad y cargados de muchos matices. Creo que no puedo imaginar a otros actores dándole vida a estos dos personajes de la vida real.

In short, this film allows us to delve into the dark history of Charles Cullen as well as the negligent hospital system that made it possible, countering this with the bravery and good values of a person who dared to do what was right knowing that he risked not only his own well-being, but also that of his family. The work of both Eddie Redmayne in the criminal role, and Jessica Chastain in the role of a brave nurse, is outstanding considering they bring to life characters with a certain level of complexity and loaded with many nuances. I don't think I can imagine other actors bringing these two real-life characters to life.
