I hadn't watched a movie in a long time, so I decided to watch a space themed film since I'm a fan of the space themed film. A quick Google search revealed a movie released this year that I had missed. Seeing its excellent ratings, I decided to watch it and now, I’m going to explain the plot to you.
Main Explain
The movie begins with one of the biggest mysteries of the entire story. A man named Ryland Grace suddenly wakes up inside a spacecraft with no idea who he is or why he is there. He is weak and confused and at first he cannot even remember his own name. Around him there is advanced technology and equipment that he does not fully understand. He slowly realizes that he has been asleep for a very long time and that he is somewhere far away from Earth. The strange part is that his memories are almost completely gone. He knows basic things about science and understands how to survive inside the spacecraft but he cannot remember his past or the reason behind the mission.

As Grace explores the spacecraft he begins finding clues about himself. He discovers that he has been surrounded by machines designed to keep him alive and that the spacecraft is carrying a large amount of scientific equipment. His body is also being monitored by the ship's systems. At first he does not know whether he is alone because there is no other human voice around him. He eventually understands that he is the only person inside the spacecraft. This makes the situation even more frightening because he has no one to ask for help. He starts testing the equipment and trying to remember basic details about his life. Slowly some memories begin returning but they come in pieces rather than as one complete story.
Grace eventually remembers that he is a scientist and teacher who specializes in science. He remembers Earth and begins connecting his memories with the strange mission he is now part of. The more he remembers the more serious the situation becomes. Earth is facing a global disaster caused by an unexplained phenomenon that is affecting the Sun. The Sun is gradually losing energy and scientists have discovered that something is consuming that energy. If the situation continues Earth will eventually become too cold for humanity to survive. Scientists have been searching for an explanation and they discover that the problem is connected to another star system.

The strange phenomenon is caused by tiny alien organisms called Astrophage. These organisms are able to absorb enormous amounts of energy from stars and survive in extreme environments. They are responsible for the unusual behavior of the Sun and other stars. Scientists realize that the Astrophage are spreading between star systems and that Earth needs to find a way to stop them. This is where Grace's mission begins to make sense. Humanity discovers that another star called Tau Ceti appears to have a similar problem and scientists believe the answer to the crisis may be hidden there.
A huge international project is created to find a solution. Scientists begin working together to build a spacecraft that can travel far beyond Earth. The mission becomes known as Project Hail Mary. The spacecraft is designed to travel to Tau Ceti and investigate the source of the Astrophage problem. Because the journey will take an extremely long time the crew needs to survive for years without returning home. Grace remembers that he originally refused to become part of the mission because he believed there was almost no chance of success. But circumstances eventually force him into the project.

Grace remembers more about his relationship with the other scientists involved in the project. One of the most important people in his past is Eva Stratt. She is the person responsible for organizing the international response to the crisis. Stratt is extremely focused on saving humanity and is willing to make difficult decisions to achieve that goal. Grace does not always agree with her methods but he understands that the situation is much bigger than any individual person. The fate of Earth depends on finding an answer.
As Grace continues remembering his past he discovers that his role in the mission was much more important than he originally thought. He was chosen because of his scientific knowledge and his ability to understand problems that other members of the team could not solve. However there is another reason why he was sent. The mission needs someone who can work independently and solve unexpected problems without depending on Earth for help.
The spacecraft eventually launches and Grace enters a long period of artificial sleep. The journey to Tau Ceti is incredibly dangerous because there is no easy way to return to Earth. During the trip something goes wrong and Grace remains unconscious for a much longer period than expected. When he finally wakes up he has lost almost all of his memories. He does not know how much time has passed and he does not know what happened to the other members of the mission.

While Grace is trying to understand his situation he begins working through the scientific problems surrounding him. He discovers that the spacecraft has been carefully designed to provide everything he needs. There is food, water, oxygen and scientific equipment but there is still one major problem. He is alone. The psychological pressure of being isolated millions of kilometers away from Earth starts becoming just as dangerous as the physical challenges.
Grace eventually remembers that his mission is connected to the fate of Earth. He begins studying the Astrophage and trying to determine how these organisms work. He realizes that they can store enormous amounts of energy and that this ability might be the key to solving humanity's problem. If scientists can understand how Astrophage move between stars and what kills them they might be able to save Earth.
When Grace finally reaches the Tau Ceti system he expects to find an empty star system and begin his research alone. Instead he discovers something completely unexpected. There is another spacecraft nearby. At first Grace cannot understand what he is seeing. The spacecraft clearly does not belong to humans and its design is completely different from anything Earth has ever created. Grace realizes that he is not alone in space.

The discovery completely changes the mission. Grace carefully approaches the other spacecraft while trying to determine whether the alien inside is dangerous. He has no way of knowing what kind of life form he is dealing with. The alien spacecraft also appears to be studying the same star system. Grace begins communicating through signals and eventually makes contact with the creature inside.
This is the moment when the story introduces one of its most important characters. The alien is named Rocky. Unlike the terrifying alien creatures usually seen in science fiction movies Rocky is intelligent curious and surprisingly friendly. He comes from a species called Eridians. His body and senses are completely different from those of humans but he is capable of understanding complex scientific ideas.

At first Grace and Rocky struggle to communicate because they have different languages and completely different ways of understanding the world. They begin using mathematics and scientific measurements as a universal language. Slowly they learn how to understand one another. Grace discovers that Rocky is also on a mission to save his own planet from the same Astrophage crisis. For the first time since waking up Grace is no longer alone. The two scientists begin sharing information and comparing what they know. They discover that their missions are connected and that both Earth and Rocky's home world are facing the same threat. Instead of competing with each other they realize that cooperation is their best chance of survival.
Their friendship begins through science but quickly becomes much deeper. Grace teaches Rocky about humans while Rocky introduces Grace to Eridian technology. They exchange knowledge and equipment and begin solving problems together. Grace slowly becomes more confident because he finally has someone beside him who understands what is happening.
However their mission is still extremely dangerous. They have limited resources and the Astrophage problem is getting worse. They need to identify what is causing the spread and find a way to stop it before both of their civilizations collapse.
As Grace and Rocky continue their investigation they discover that the Astrophage is connected to a strange organism that lives near the stars. They call the organism the Taumoeba. This discovery gives them a possible solution because the Taumoeba can interact with Astrophage in ways that may allow them to control or destroy it.

But finding the solution is not enough. They must figure out how to safely transport and use the organisms. Every experiment carries a risk because one mistake could destroy their spacecraft or kill them. Grace repeatedly has to rely on his scientific knowledge while Rocky uses his own understanding of biology and engineering.
The two slowly become a perfect scientific team. Grace is good at solving problems from the human perspective while Rocky brings knowledge that humans could never have discovered on their own. Their cooperation gives both civilizations a chance they never had before.
At this point Grace also starts remembering more about the people he left behind on Earth. He remembers his students and his old life as a teacher. He remembers the people who believed in him and the people who were frustrated with his decisions. Most importantly he begins understanding why he was chosen for Project Hail Mary.
He was not simply sent into space to collect information. He was sent because humanity needed someone who could make decisions when there was no one left to guide him. And now he has another civilization depending on him as well.
The mission becomes much more personal as Grace realizes that the fate of two worlds may depend on the friendship between a human scientist and an alien scientist. Their journey is no longer just about finding the source of the Astrophage. They need to discover a way to return the solution to their respective planets before it is too late.

As the first part of the story comes to an end Grace and Rocky are finally beginning to understand the full scale of the problem. They have found important clues but they still do not have a complete solution. Their resources are limited and the journey home will be just as dangerous as the journey to Tau Ceti.
Grace now understands something even more important. He may have started this mission believing that he was completely alone but he is no longer alone. Rocky has become his partner and his closest friend. Together they continue working toward one goal — finding a way to save both of their worlds before the stars around them become silent.
