"You" is a series that begs the question "what wouldn't you do for love?"

"You" is a thriller. It centers on a man called Joe Goldberg who becomes obsessive with women he is interested in.

The plot

Make no mistakes, this show had an amazing plot. There are so many twists and high tension moments that would just keep you at the edge of your seat.

The main character, Joe Goldberg is a unique one. He is very obsessive. When he sees a lady he is interested in, he studies her. Stalks her on the internet to learn things about here like where she lives, where she goes to and other things. He also stalks physically.

He spends minutes to hours lurking around his victims, being so close yet so far from them, observing them.

The show takes us on the journey of how Joe won the hearts of ladies. He is obsessive and with time, his character begins to unfold for the women. He commits several murder for the lady he is obsessed with and the excuse he tells himself is that it's for her own protection. Eventually, his relationships end in catastrophic manners because the truth about how damaged Joe really is always comes to light.

The characters

I'll start with Joe Goldberg. This was a character well played by the actor. Joe Goldberg is smart. I have to give him that. He knows how to get familiar with someone and get into their heart.

Joe studies his interests. He learns what they like, what gets them excited, what they do, where they go. Then he uses that information to his advantage. He appears to solve their problems sometimes.

Joe is the kind of character that makes the audience start to like him and even defend his actions. The show will make you try to convince yourself that Joe is the good guy. I mean, he defends his woman, he is the perfect romantic. But then, he has the natural instinct to murder people, and he got good at hiding the bodies and hiding evidence.

I won't forget to mention the famous cage. Joe has the tendency to lock people, including his lovers in a cage. That's where he holds them until he figures out what to do with them.

The thing about Joe is that the monster he turned into can be attributed to his childhood. He didn't have a proper family growing up. He was also locked up in a cage by a man he used to work with as a child. He has the constant need to be loved. I think these are the things that contributed in making Joe the monster he is.

Another interesting character for me in this series is Love Quinn.

She was Joe's wife at some point. Joe got obsessed with her and won her heart, but then, he later found out that she too was crazy and could do the extreme, even murdering people just for him. They got married, she had a son for Joe, but then, their marriage had a chaotic outcome.

The acting

I can say for a fact that the acting in this series was top notch. For a show to keep you engaged and in suspense like this one did, the acting had to be fantastic. Penn Badgley did a magnificent work playing Joe Goldberg.

The raw emotions, love, sadness, frustration, betrayal were all palpable. At no point would you feel like the acting wasn't original.

If you're looking for a series with twists, shockers, suspense, this is the one to watch. It ran form 2018 to 2025 and has 5 season. Each season is definitely worth the time.

Rating: 90/100
