Animals (2026) Review

Review by @mmam 🏆#116 🎵59 🎬44 📺14 · 4h · of Animals

I watched Animals over the weekend, and it kept me hooked. It's a tense crime thriller from Ben Affleck. The story followed Mark Kimball (Ben Affleck), a man running for mayor of Los Angeles. He appeared to have a successful life, a beautiful family and a promising political career. However, things took a frightening turn when he received news that his son had been kidnapped. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of seven million dollars, leaving Mark and his wife, Abigail, desperate to find a way to save the child.

As the situation became more complicated, Mark and Abigail discovered that their problems went beyond the kidnapping. Their marriage was already troubled, secrets were being hidden, and Mark had financial problems that could damage his political ambitions. With time running out, they were forced to consider dangerous options to get the ransom money.
The biggest twist came when they discovered that the kidnapped boy was not their son, Denny, but Hector, the son of their housekeeper. This revelation changed everything. It was no longer simply a question of protecting their own child. They had to decide what Hector's life was worth to them, especially when saving him could cost them their money, reputation and future.

What I found interesting about the story was how it placed wealth, power and human life against each other. Mark wanted to become mayor, and the kidnapping threatened everything he had worked for. His decisions raised questions about whether he genuinely wanted to do the right thing or whether he was more concerned about protecting his public image.

Mark showed a man struggling to keep control of a situation that was gradually slipping out of his hands. Abigail (Kerry Washington) a woman whose own secrets made an already difficult situation even more complicated. Dayle Burton (Gillian Anderson) also brought an interesting presence to the movie, as a woman who became involved in their desperate search for a solution.

However, although the storyline had a promising beginning, I felt that some parts of the movie could have been handled better. The kidnapping created an opportunity for a tense and emotional thriller, but some of the developments felt unnecessarily complicated. I also wanted certain characters to receive more attention because their roles could have added more depth to the story.
The ending left me with mixed feelings. The characters made decisions that revealed their true priorities, and the outcome showed that doing something wrong did not always mean suffering the consequences one would expect. Sometimes, people managed to protect their positions even after making questionable choices.

Overall, The movie was an interesting thriller that explored the darker side of human nature. It had an intriguing storyline, a talented cast and a situation that forced its characters to make difficult decisions. Although the execution did not always match the strength of the premise, the movie still offered plenty to discuss, especially when it came to selfishness, privilege and the value people placed on other people's lives.

The movie was worth considering for anyone who enjoyed crime thrillers with family drama, political tension and morally complicated characters.
