Apex (2026) Review: A Survival Game That Kept Me on Edge

There was something about Apex that made the idea of going on a solo adventure in the wilderness seem like a bad decision. What started as a journey for peace turned into a fight for survival, and Sasha soon discovered that the dangers around her were far worse than she had expected.

The movie followed Sasha (Charlize Theron), a mountain climber who was still struggling with the loss of her partner, Tommy (Eric Bana). Five months after the tragic incident that took Tommy's life, Sasha travelled to the Australian wilderness, hoping to find some peace away from everything.

However, her journey did not go as planned. She crossed paths with Ben (Taron Egerton) a man whose friendly appearance hid a dangerous personality. Before long, Sasha found herself being hunted by someone who had no intention of letting her leave easily.
Sasha's Journey Was More Dangerous Than I Expected

One thing I found interesting about Sasha was that she was not a complete beginner when it came to outdoor adventures. She knew how to climb, and she was willing to take risks. But even with her experience, she was not prepared for the kind of danger she encountered.
Her grief also made her journey more complicated. She was not simply looking for excitement; she was dealing with a painful experience and trying to find her way forward.
I liked that the story gave her a personal reason for travelling into the wilderness. It made her character more understandable, even though some of her decisions put her in difficult situations.

What made the situation worse was how isolated she was. There was no easy way to call for help, and she could not simply walk away from the danger. She had to think carefully about her next move because the wrong decision could leave her in an even worse position.

Ben was one of the most unsettling parts of the movie for me. Taron Egerton played him as someone who could appear helpful one moment and frightening the next.
At first, he did not seem like the kind of person Sasha needed to worry about. That was what made the situation uncomfortable. She had no reason to believe that accepting help or receiving directions from a stranger could lead her into such a dangerous situation.
What I found disturbing was Ben's attitude towards hunting people. He did not treat it as something terrible. Instead, he approached it like a game in which he expected to remain in control.

His performance gave the character an unpredictable side. It was difficult to know what he would do next, and that uncertainty made his scenes more tense.
I also liked the contrast between Ben and Sasha. While Sasha was desperately trying to survive, Ben seemed to enjoy having power over her. Their conflict gave the movie much of its suspense.

The Wilderness Made Everything Worse
The Australian setting was another thing I appreciated about Apex. The scenery was beautiful, but it also made Sasha's situation frightening.
The rocky landscapes, rivers, cliffs, and forests created several obstacles for her. She was not only trying to escape Ben; she also had to deal with the dangers of the environment.

The action scenes also benefited from this setting. Instead of depending entirely on weapons and physical fights, the movie used the landscape to create tension.
There were moments when Sasha's situation looked almost impossible, especially when she had to keep moving despite exhaustion and danger.

What I enjoyed most about the story was the constant struggle between Sasha and Ben. Their situation created a different kind of tension because Sasha could not afford to relax for too long.

I love Charlize Theron's performance. She made Sasha look determined without making her appear invincible. Her character struggled, faced difficult choices, and had to keep finding ways to survive.
Another thing I liked was that the movie did not depend only on dialogue to create excitement. The physical action, the environment, and the threat of being caught all played important roles.

However, I felt that Sasha's grief could have received more attention. Although it was an important part of her character, I wanted to understand more about her relationship with Tommy and how his death affected her.
Some moments also felt predictable, especially if you have watched several survival thrillers. Nevertheless, the performances and the dangerous setting helped keep the story interesting.

Overall, Apex was an entertaining survival thriller with strong performances from Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton. I liked the way the story combined Sasha's personal struggles with the danger she faced in the Australian wilderness.

I would recommend Apex to people who enjoy survival stories, dangerous adventures, and thrillers involving a desperate escape from a ruthless enemy.
