Imagine climbing a 2,000-foot tower for the excitement, only to discover that there was no way back down. What would you have done? That was the nightmare Fall put its characters through.
The movie followed Becky Connor (Grace Caroline Currey), who was still struggling after losing her husband, Dan Connor (Mason Gooding), in a climbing accident. After his death, Becky had become withdrawn and had stopped doing the things she once enjoyed. Her friend, Shiloh “Hunter” Hunter (Virginia Gardner), was the complete opposite.
Hunter love taking risks and wanted Becky to face her fears and get back to her old self. She eventually convinced Becky to climb an old television tower that stood in the middle of a desert. At first, the climb went as planned, and the two friends successfully reached the top. But everything changed when the ladder broke. Suddenly, Becky and Hunter were trapped hundreds of metres above the ground with no easy way down.
That was when the real struggle began. What made Fall interesting was that it didn't need a ghost, monster or killer to create fear. The height alone was enough.
Watching Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) and Hunter (Virginia Gardner) move around that small platform made some scenes genuinely difficult to watch.
As time passed, their situation became worse. Their food and water were limited, their phones were not much help, and the hot desert weather made everything more difficult. The two women also had very different personalities. Hunter (Virginia Gardner) was confident and willing to take risks, while Becky (Grace Caroline Currey) was more cautious because of the painful experience she had already gone through.
There were several moments when I found myself thinking, why they did that. Some of their decisions were questionable, but they also kept the movie interesting because I never really knew what would happen next.
James Conner,(Jeffrey Dean Morgan), was Becky's father. His relationship with Becky added another emotional side to the story, especially because of the tension that had developed between them after Dan's death.
What I also liked was that Becky's struggle wasn't only about getting down from the tower. She had been carrying a lot of pain since losing her husband. Being trapped on that tower forced her to confront some of the fears and emotions she had been avoiding.
Overall, Fall was a simple survival story, but it handled in a way that kept the tension going. The movie made a very high tower feel like a prison, and I kept wondering how Becky and Hunter would possibly make it back to the ground.
It wasn't a perfect movie, and some parts were hard to believe, but as a survival thriller, it did a good job of keeping me nervous.
If you enjoyed survival and thriller movies, Fall was definitely worth watching. And if you were afraid of heights, some of the scenes would probably have made you hold your breath.
